My first van trip in 2+ years! 🙌 Re-Launching my vanlife adventures 💕 . * Trigger warning for loss * . My little brother Tommy helped me buy and fix up this van in 2021. I did 2 big trips in it before he passed away from a motorcycle crash. . Earlier this week (April 22nd) was the 2nd anniversary of his passing. When he died, I couldn't even stand the sight of the van. So it sat, and literally started rotting away. . After 2 years, I finally felt ready to start making adventures with it again. . It was just overnight camping trip at a familiar state park 45 minutes from my apartment,  but it was a step in the right direction. . More importantly: I made a brand new good memory in it again. . On the way in, I saw a deer on the side of the road during golden hour. I browsed the shared library I've donated tons of books to over the years and found one to take for now. I enjoyed a comfy night of sleep on the new memory foam mattress I added,  and I got to keep the doors and windows open with the new magnetic screens I added. . I fell asleep to the sound of crickets. I woke up to the sunrise, the sound of birds chirping, and the wind rustling through the leaves. 🌿 . I made multiple meals: - Dinner: rotisserie chicken salad - Breakfast: Greek yogurt with berries & honey and coffee ☕ (a squirrel joined me for this one 🐿️) . I went on a familiar 2-hour long 5.3 mile hike through so many different ecosystems. Shared a snack with a colony of ants while I watched them carry off the large cookie crumbs, and spent a few hours swimming and diving into the springhead. . To the little brother who helped me go on adventures before, and is still helping me even now that he's gone, I reached out and made a half heart. And normally, he would have reached out with the second half. . Heading home, I felt confident that many more trips would be in the works. . I frigging love Girl Scouts. Sure, this camping weekend ended with a killer migraine and a sick day, but the 24 hours at camp with these young women? We fought pre-teen battles and laughed until we cried. We struggled with fire building (because these girls wouldn't settle for using a fire starter) and celebrated when our tinder caught. It was a really good weekend. Scenes from a lovely but bittersweet last RV trip of 2023. Extra on the sweet part though because Dad and Anna joined us on the ride to/ from as we delivered them to my Dad’s lifelong friend (and my first “imaginary friend), Jimmy “Giggler” Gallagher and his wife Theresa. Some snow, some hiking in the White Mountains and some candy catten shenanigans. Anna loved traveling in the RV while Shane drove the Bronco with my Dad. Found a lovely campground that was open year round. One of the reasons I started Girl Camper is because I grew up in a camping family and I knew a lot about it when I started doing it as a solo traveler. I came to understand pretty quickly that not everybody had a family like mine. Very hands-on, get ‘er done, you got this girl kind of family. We started teaching people some simple things about towing, camp life and RV maintenance. There is just so much you can do yourself without having to spend the money to take your RV into a dealership. Last weekend I did a visual check on my roof because I’m getting ready to cover my camper for the winter. This ladder (@lippert__ ) has come in so handy. It’s an extension ladder that folds down very short. Sometimes things get stuck in my fan and I can fish it out with a broom. Also, I removed a pretty heavy duty stick wedged under my air conditioner. I might have clipped the tree while backing into my site! I can also use this ladder to begin threading my awning into the channel on my camper. Over the years, I have compiled a set of tools that I rely on. This is a new one for me and I have to say that I am loving it because it’s been very handy at the campground but also, I get to use it at home to clean my gutters. Love dual duty camp/home gear. In the next issue of Girl Camper Magazine I wrote an article on our big adventure on the Salmon River last summer. At the end of day two we spotted a fire cloud. By day three we were in the thick of it having to go through the fire to get out of it. We were in great hands with @mackaywildernessrivertrips and never felt in danger. It was devastating to see the fires toll on the river but it was eerily beautiful.
