"Zviiit .... Zviiit " après les pluies du mois d'avril, retentit le chant aiguie et strident de la Centrolène de Kaw (Hyalinobatrachium kawense). Une petite grenouille de verre, qui jusqu'à récemment était considérée comme très rare et endémique du Nord est de la Guyane. Pourtant celle ci est finalement très commune, mais son chant est si ténu, et celle ci est si discrète ( pas plus de 2 cm) qu'elle est souvent passé inaperçu. Si aujourd'hui son chant ne nous échappe plus, elle reste très difficile à voire. Une minuscule boule verdâtre qui pousse son cris à 5 mètre au dessus des criques. Let’s not do any skinny-shaming. The Channel Islands slender salamander can’t help the way it’s built. For this salamander and the other salamanders in its genus (group), the word “slender” is right there in their names. Someone was feeling entitled to comment on their bodies. Their bodies are highly functional and well adapted to their environments. For example, Channel Islands slender salamanders tend to curl up when they detect a threat; they stay still and rely on their great camouflage. Salamanders in this genus have also been reported to very quickly coil and uncoil their bodies like a spring, which can result in propelling themselves as far as almost two feet along the ground. This can serve to confuse or startle would-be predators. Plus, these salamanders will detach their tails, which then wriggle on the ground to create a distraction so that they can get away. Clearly, Channel Islands slender salamanders have amazing bodies capable of amazing things. And instead of drawing attention to their narrow silhouettes, perhaps we should focus on the fact that their range is narrow. They’re found only on four of California’s Channel Islands, Anacapa, San Miguel, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa. Hola a todos estamos de regreso 🐍 Cascabel tropical del pacifico - Crotalus culminatus Sin duda alguna este ha sido uno de mis encuentros favoritos, ocurrió en las selvas bajas del estado de Morelos, cruzando un camino a lejos se manifestó la forma de un dragón, el dragón de las selvas bajas morelenses. Con aproximadamente dos metros de longitud, un carácter imponente y un brillo muy particular, este ejemplar me permitió tomarle algunas fotos siempre bajo su mirada fria pero nunca me atacó. Plain-Bellied Water Snake(Nerodia erythrogaster) -harmless Erthrogaster meaning red-bellied better describes the vibrant undersides of these snakes, though the common name does help distinguish this species from other Nerodia which have checkered bellies. It’s been reported that they can give live birth to as many as 50 neonates in one litter! Linzey and Clifford(1981) First intentional find of the season for me, apart from a few not so photogenic skinks. Hopefully many more to come. A forest crested lizard 🦎 (𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘦𝘮𝘮𝘢) shot with my birding lens during a day-trip to Railay Beach, Thailand. These blast points, too accurate for sand lizards. Finally got to snap sand lizards [Lacerta agilis] in their lime green breeding colours, last image to show the difference in colour. As the males emerge from hibernation in the spring their flanks turn this beautiful green colour. The females lay their eggs in late May or early June, keeping them buried in sand exposed to the sun, which helps to keep them warm. The eggs hatch around late August and September. Specialists of heathland and sand dunes they are dependent on those habitats. Unfortunately due to the decline in these areas they are only found naturally on a few protected sites with limited distribution. Due to their rarity they are strictly protected under British and European law. Woodhouses Toad (Anaxyrus woodhousii woodhousii) On the rare occasion that I do get to see this species, I almost never take pictures of them because they are one of the worst models on this planet. Any chance they get, they’ll hop away moments before my camera focuses on them. This ugly little fella was no exception. Luckily Aaron took 5-7 business days to photograph a speck we had just found so in the meantime I was occupied with this guy. After getting him posed, focusing my camera, watching him hop away then repeating the process fifteen different times, I was finally able to get a shot that I wanted! A European Snake-eyed Skink (Ablepharus kitaibelii fitzingeri) from near Budapest. Along with the Common Wall Lizards these small skinks are the first reptiles to emerge from their wintering places, usually already in February. They are found in grasslands and submediterranean scrub forests in Hungary and are most easily observed in the early spring. I never get sick of seeing the critically endangered De Vis’ Banded Snake or Mud Adder (Denisonia devisi) in the Mildura region. This individual was seen on a coolish night a couple of weeks ago with the temp hovering around 15 C. Look at its cute little face, how could you not love it? This adorable one is the Malayan Bridle Snake (Lycodon subannulatus) and was spotted by @ethanajaylaii during a casual walk! (I don’t remember if we were doing survey or not oops) These slender arboreal snakes are masters at climbing and can be found plastered on the side of tree trunks searching for prey items like geckos. When I first opened my field guide after purchasing it, I was very surprised to discover the existence of the Parsley frog (Pelodytes punctatus) in France, I had never heard of this species prior to that and I definitely underestimated the herpetofauna diversity of France! So finally, after 3 years of wanting to see this species, I was able to not only get in range but finally have the chance to go look for them. So on the first and second night of my trip we went out with my good friend @alex.birds18 to see them in a random flooded pasture where old observations had been done. These suckers were not easy to find as they dip in the water once you get close to them and they are so tiny! Fun fact pelos means dive and dytas means mud so in Latin they are technically speaking called punctuated mud diver 🐸 after some patience and determination we were able to catch three of them and take some pictures before releasing them. This is a Malayan blue coral snake (Calliophis bivirgatus) that we recently found on our trip to the highlands of Pahang. The weather condition has not been conducive for herping as not a single drop of rain has blessed the land in over two weeks. However, our luck turned on our final night when it was pouring rain from late afternoon to late evening, leading us to find some of our target species along with this magnificent Malayan blue coral snake. Overall, we found 11 snakes comprising of 7 species in 2 nights of herping. DM us for guided herp tours! Hypopachus variolosus Bien ganado tiene su nombre de Rana termitera, pues se alimenta en buena parte de hormigas y termitas. Esta pequeña y simpática rana de forma triangular puede ser encontrada en grandes cantidades despues de las lluvias, en el suelo de la selva o caminos con charcos, en la selva se pierde fácilmente por sus hábitos de ocultarse debajo de la hojarasca. En alguna ocasión me tocó ver un ejemplar de estos alimentandose de hormigas, simplemente permaneciendo inmóvil junto a estas, atrapando con su lengua cuantas podía. Tambien recuerdo en 2021 ver cientos de estos en los caminos de sascab encharcados o por la selvas en Calakmul, aunque acá era mas fácil de perderlos... como quiera me di vuelo tomandoles algunas fotitos c: ya llevo un rato sin verles en tal cantidad

The ornate aviator - - When one is in the tropics, one does not always wander far in search of wildlife. There are a great many instances where creatures, of common yet fantastic species, appear just within your own backyard. I had just returned to my family home, off the back of a particularly successful expedition when my friend spotted something slithering about among the bouganvilleas. Its black and lime green batik gleamed in the sun as it watched us with wide eyed innocence. Sleep deprived though I was, a snake is a snake and I wanted to get a closer look. Using a snake hook, we managed to knock it out of its thorn ridden tower and picked it up. I later relocated it, after much prodding by my less than herpetologically inclined family. - The golden tree snake is a species found in high abundance in Southeast Asia and with considerably greater rarity in India. These separate populations have, over the course of centuries, split into somewhat distinct patterns with the Indian variety's dorsal view splattered with red like a modern abstract. One trait the two do share however, is the capability of flight with the snake being noted as launching itself some 100m in a single leap. It does so by contraction of ventral scales into a U-shape which acts as a parachute, while the rest of the scales remain rigid. This then maximizes air resistance allowing the snake to fall with style. This trait appears to have evolved for hunting arboreal lizards and frogs though the snake can easily do so to retreat. Despite their speed, quick flight or fight response and mild venom, they have recently become popular exotic pets. They are currently being exported out of Vietnam.
