1990 Lexus LS400 [90-MH-15128] For #NinetiesCarWeek by @southshore_carspotting. I know this appears to be an LS400, but it’s registered as a Toyota Celsior apparently. I’ll go with LS400 for the purposes of this post, they’re the same anyway. In 1983, Toyota decided to rival the luxury cars of both the European and US market, and in 1989 production of the sporty yet refined LS400 began in Japan. Since then they’ve captured many people’s hearts. They’re indescribably cool as everyone knows. Put stock wheels on this one and you’ve got a savage car! She’s had the same owner since May, and it’s tested into 2025. 2000 Volkswagen Passat 1.6 (B5) [00-D-51656] A petrol Passat - out of character for Ireland 🤨 Well, not for our supposed “capital”. This is a Dublin registered car, and the Dubs tend to lean towards petrol engines rather than the dirty reeky German diesels we go mad for in Coillte Mach. For example, you’d be hard pressed to find a non TDI Volkswagen in rural Ireland, save a few GTIs and such. At least 90% of Boras, Golfs, Jettas, Passats, Tourans etc are rolling coal. Even Lupos tend to engage in a bit of black smoke trolling. Anyway, this one’s had the same owner since 2002. Twenty-one years, impressive! She’s tested till September 2024. I wish it many more happy miles! 1980 Mercedes 350SE Auto (W116) [ZV 27190] My dad actually test drove this and he considered buying this car, but didn’t in the end. The asking price was an exorbitant 5 or 6 thousand euros and she needed quite a bit of work. Lovely car however, gorgeous matching interior and exterior. 90k on the clock! 2005 Honda HR-V 1.6 [05-D-39954] What better car to bring to Woodies DIY, a Honda HR-V. They’re definitely getting scarce in Ireland now, they never sold well in the first place. Shame really, I long for the days when crossovers were actually good 4x4s (although I’m quite sure this one in particular is not 4WD) HRVs are fine little jeeps, my dad had a 4x4 VTEC one and it was capable enough. The only issue is that the HRV was one of the first dreaded crossovers, and while the original generation of crossovers were quite effective off-road, they set a precedent for the current rotten jokes we see on the roads today. The modern HR-V is a fat, lazy excuse of a car. Ranting over for the day. This one’s a nice enough example, still wearing its dealer plate and sticker from E.P. Mooney’s of the Naas Road, who still trade in Dublin, now selling Hyundais. 1994 Talbot Express Rambler 2.0 Autosleeper GL [95-WW-11030] Talbot’s last ever motor vehicle! Spotted in the car park of Ireland’s famous Decathlon sporting goods store, just beside the even more famous IKEA Ballymun, while on our way home from picking up the little 307 from my grandparents house, where it had spent its whole life, to force it into slave labour in Wicklow’s Lawless South. She’s still going strong today 💪 It’s insanely rare to see a Talbot of any description in any place in this country, nevermind an Express. It was one of those vans with nine billion different names, it was the Alfa Romeo AR6, the Citroen C25, the Fiat Ducato, the Peugeot J5 and of course, the Talbot Express. This one has had the same owner since 2019, is a British import, and has Wicklow plates. While these joint-effort workhorses were sold all over the place, the Talbots were only sold in the UK. They were fitted with Citroen and Peugeot petrol and diesel engines, and even a 4x4 option was offered, but that’s a hen’s tooth. Apologies for the cringeworthy photos. Yes, I understand the Seat Leon is not yet spottable, but this was an early example with the same owner since 2005, forgive me, ok? As far as I can tell, this little car has died since I spotted it. 2000 Toyota Yaris 1.0VVTi (XP10/Mk1) [00-SO-4642] I sprinted out of a shop to spot this. Here’s a car I’ve been looking forward to posting - a lovely old Toyota Yaris I found in Blanchardstown Shopping Centre last April. I just know @christophers__cars’ urine is positively boiling at the sight of this ultra-cool beast. Yes, a lot of people will begrudge me posting a ‘00 Yaris, but let’s face facts, the early ones are begging to thin out, and will continue to do so. This one is striking with its contrasting black paint and incredibly faded plastics, some of the most faded I’ve ever seen on a car in fact. They need some olive oil rubbed on them. How did a Sligo registered car end up in Dublin? That’s a mystery. For those of you who don’t know, Sligo is a very rural place in the west of Ireland, miles from Dublin’s metropolitan rat race. It’s also a UK import, would you believe, I’d imagine it’s a personal import from the North. Anyway, no matter how it got to Dublin, it’s here now and I’m delighted for it. 1997 Nissan Micra 1.0 16V GX Lite Auto [97-D-54218] Can you think of a better car to learn in? Looking past the fact it’s automatic, I can’t. This Micra Lite is absolutely gorgeous. It spends its days in a sleepy housing estate in the posh Dublin suburb of Monkstown, and it’s the most stylish car on the road (excluding the neughbours who have TWO Partnerlingos). It still has its gorgeous dealer plates and sticker from White and Delahunty Nissan, which would’ve been based down the road. It’s an original Dublin car and has had the same keeper since 2001! Dedication at its finest, I know I’d love to own this for twenty-two years straight! It really is a shame how scarce the pre-facelift K11 Micras have gotten. We loved them here in Ireland, Nissan sold them in their billions through a nationwide network of dealerships, but now -“” the little pre-face Micras have left us. Shame really, they were built like tanks, but alas, rust was a killer. 2004 Seat Inca 1.9SDI [04-D-54664] They talk about red Ferraris, Alfas and Lancias, but have you seen a sight nicer than this Seat basking in the Irish summer sun? No lads, your eyes are not deceiving you. That is a Seat Inca that’s been actually kept in good enough condition! I know this one looks a little tired but trust me, plenty were worse (including ours). This one has a dealer sticker from the defunct Nobber Motors in County Meath. It had a recent owner change in March of this year, meaning that hopefully it’ll be kept on the road a while longer. I’m delighted to announce that since these pictures were taken, she’s been tested until August 2024 - another year of motoring! I don’t know if you can see the padlock on the back, but I only noticed it after taking the pictures. It tells me that I probably would’ve been bate had I been caught spotting this, the owner might be a small bit paranoid of a break in. Mind you, who can blame him? 2006 Ford Focus 1.4 Zetec [06-MH-1371] A Mk2 Focus is a car I didn’t think would be seen on this account for at least four or five years. Yes carspotting in Ireland is dire, but it’s not THAT bad yet lads. However, I thought this specimen was worth a photograph… The day I spotted this was a fruitful one. Dalkey was teeming with lovely cars. Near the end of that leafy stroll I was confronted with this Ford. A lot to get my head around. So as you can see - it’s been decorated. Now I’m going to give you an unpopular opinion. Many people will view this as very distasteful or stupid, and to be fair I don’t really like it either, but there’s no harm in this really. In fact, I’m glad this Mk2 Focus is splattered with stickers. It gave me something to look at. I would’ve walked past a normal one, but I sure as heck didn’t give this example just one look. 1956 Austin-Healey 100M (BN2) [56-MH-1] Another car that’s pretty in two shades of blue - an Austin-Healey 100M basking in the Dalkey sun. Named for its supposed ability to reach 100 miles per hour, the Healey 100 was built in Longbridge with Austin components, while Jensen created the bodies. She’s got a County Meath registration, however the car is an import, assumedly from Britain. You’re looking for one of these new Golf Mk2s you’ve been hearing about, they’re reliable, cute, and practical. You’ve a few pound to spend, so which spec do you choose? Well, there are the basics. Hatchbacks. Hatches with various degrees of luxury attached to them. None of them are overly special, all of them are purely good at what they were built to do. You could have a GTI. You like the sound of that, because if you’re reading this post, you’re most likely a man. You’ll go to shake the salesman’s hand and put your faith in a classy hot hatch - the VW Golf GTI. 1991 Opel Vectra 1.6i GLS (A) [91-WW-1844] No, I will not be hearing anyone out. I suppose I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the Vectra A. I love it because it’s a fine-looking dependable auld bus, and I hate it because it’s often used against me when it comes to jokes. A certain number of you might understand where this crude and evil sense of humour comes from. This car is incredible. Nice, original Irish, painted in a lovely colour, and it’s registered in my native County Wicklow! On the back it has a Kilcoole Garage sticker, which is quite disappointing seen as Kilcoole is the worst town in Wicklow, and possibly the worst town in the country outside of Wexford. It’s just filled with lifeless mutants who’ve been poisoned by the contents of the local nuclear waste dump. They think they’re better than the rest of Wicklow, which is simply untrue. Anyway, I’ve digressed again, this is a gorgeous example that I’ve seen at a few shows now, it was also featured in the Irish Vintage Scene magazine at some stage. I’d imagine it’s one of the cleanest examples left in the country. I know this will be of great interest to @_vaux.car.harasser_. @neylanjohn and @whendidyoulastsee might lust after it too. P.S. you might notice the same ultra-rare Bitter SC parked beside the Vectra in both locations. This could be a coincidence but I’d say the two boys travel together. 2012 Perodua Myvi 1.3SXi [12-D-37381] PERODUA MYVI! Didn’t expect to see one of these on a walk through Dalkey. There’s one of these in Aughrim that’s been evading me, but I’ll catch it some day. This is my first Malaysian post! Yay! Unfortunately, in large part due to the fact it was made by an obscure little Malaysian car brand called Perodua, the Myvi was never a great success here in Ireland, or in Britain, or in Europe, or basically anywhere that wasn’t south-east Asia. I don’t even know where you would’ve gone to buy one of these in Ireland, like, did they have showrooms at all? Don’t think so. Despite the massive flop these cars were, I think they’re decent. Unfortunately, most owners haven’t a notion just how rare and obscure their Myvis are, and will scrap them eventually. My bet is that this thing won’t see another six years, and it could very well be gone by then. 1991 Honda Beat 656cc [91-MH-4801] Now if we were all to adopt a lifestyle tomorrow similar to that of Tokyo, we’d inevitably be driven towards little cars like this one. The city streets of Japan are easily navigable with a small motor. Japan was of course the birthplace of the legendary Kei car class, a legion of microscopic automobiles designed to bypass Japan’s cruel emissions and vehicle sizing laws. Each Kei car has a 656cc engine, made punchy thanks to the lightweight bodies they find themselves in, this Honda Beat for example weights just around three quarters of a tonne. It’s immediately likeable, it exudes character from all angles, and I’d love one. They’re sought after cars these days. In my opinion, they’re one of very few Hondas that aren’t boring. The design was conceived by Pininfarina, it was the last Honda given the seal of approval by Soichiro Honda, the father of the company, and it doesn’t bore you to sleep. Sounds good alright. 1995 Rover Mini 1.3 Sidewalk [95-D-46748] How often do you see a street-parked Mini, that seems to be daily driven? Not too often is the answer. When I saw this one, my curiosity was enhanced by the ‘Sidewalk’ stickers, Sidewalk being the name for a line of special edition Minis! The Sidewalk models were produced between 1994 and 1996. The interior is a sort of blue and red tartan. Three exterior colours were offered; Charcoal Grey, White Diamond, and Kingfisher Blue as shown here. Other little extras are present, such as red seatbelts and red lining in the boot. If I was to have a Mini, and someday if I’m rich I’d love to, I’d want something like this. It’s not perfect, it’s got its imperfections, it’s very possibly dailied and it’s a tidy little special edition. What more could you want from a car that already offers a go-kart like feel? 1998 Opel Astra 1.4 16V GL (G) [98-L-2171] Dublin is the one county in Ireland that everyone agrees is horrible. Even the people who live there despise it. Different counties have their own little rivalries going on, some of them a lot more bitter than others, but I’m sure we will all band together one day to defeat our common enemy. Being from outside the Pale, I have a burning hatred for the place. But one thing I will credit it for is its cars. If you want to go carspotting in Ireland, it’s one of the best places in my opinion. Shame that some day a Low Emissions Zone of some sort will wipe them out someday… Anyway, rant over. This Astra has a Limerick reg, and I wonder what its life would’ve been like had it stayed in its native county. It probably would’ve been stabbed, or something like that. It wouldn’t be in such good condition anyway. This pristine example has been out of test since October, I’ll assume it’s been backlogged. 1998 Citroen Xsara 1.6 Coupe [98-D-54559] For #citroenweek by @elli.carspotting. I know I’ve said it before, but Dublin surburbs are goldmines as far as spotting is concerned. Every street you walk down seems abound with chod. Unfortunately, I live in rural Wicklow where this just isn’t the case. Very unfair. First world problems eh? And while it’s lovely to see old relics of time such as this Xsara, I often find myself pondering how much of a shame it is to see these poor cars abandoned, I often think they’d make great little motors for people who had time and a genuine passion for them. Unfortunately, the fate of this Xsara will probably involve a scrapyard, as it’s been off the road since 2010. It’s also had the same owner since it was just a few months old in March of 1999, so at least that’s something. Maybe they’ll put it back on the road? Maybe? Just maybe? The Xsara originally came out in 1997, with the Coupe/2-Door debuting the following year in 1998, making this an early example. The coupe Xsara is actually quite different to the hatchback, with very different body panels and some other cool quirks that set it apart. So, I suppose if you wanted a bit of extra style and sleekness, the Xsara Coupe was a nice bet. 2001 Jaguar XK8 4.0 V8 Auto [01-C-28479] Monkstown is prime turf for these Jaguars. It’s a leafy suburb where people think they’re higher up than the International Space Station. In my opinion, Jaguar did a great job with XK8. It looks fast and refined at the same time, plus the front looks a bit like a fish, and I tend to like cars that look like fish (i.e. P90 Starlet). 1999 Mitsuoka Viewt 1.3 [99-WW-7532] For #micramonday and #mitsuokamonday. On a stroll through Lucan with my intended final destination being a Daewoo Lanos, I was fortunate enough to spy this quirky Japanese hatch, the Mitsuoka Viewt! I love the concept of this car. It’s a K11 Micra (March to be truthful) that’s been done up to mirror the look of an old Rover. That idea hadn’t been done much before, and hasn’t been done much since. This is a truly special car, with a wonderful luxurious red leather interior. P.S. I didn’t see the Lanos. Perfectly described as a wolf in sheep’s clothing, this is no normal Focus ST with a few subtle performance modifications bringing its power up to around 300bhp.. This example benefits from a Milltek exhaust system, Bilstein suspension, upgraded intercooler & cold air induction kit, RS clutch & flywheel and a remap to name but a few bits. To add to this it was originally specced in Ireland unusually as a four-door with climate control, an electric sunroof and auto xenon lights making it stand out from the crowd. This car received a minor correction and six month sealant as well as a much needed interior & engine bay detail. 1999 Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia The ‘99 Focus is as early you can get in Ireland. The elusive 1998 model only seems to have arrived here through British imports. The last known ‘98 Focus was shown on NCT records in 2020. Thankfully, a fair few ‘99s still soldier on! This one’s had the same owner since May 2000, and it’s tested until next month, so hopefully it has a while left to run! When it was released, it embraced Ford’s modern ‘new-edge’ styling. It was both loved and hated for these styling cues. I personally believe that is was a decent enough replacement for the Escort, a hard act to follow. It’s main rivals would’ve been the likes of the Bora, Megane, and the Corolla, three popular cars of the late nineties in Ireland. In many respects, the Mk1 Focus emerged superior, it has a certain sense of refinement that other cars lack, especially the VW and Toyota. The Focus saloons were less popular in Britain, just like many other saloons like it. The New Edge design was seen throughout the car, from the varied angles on the outside and the space-age yet highly accessible interior. While boot-space wasn’t its forte, the Mk1 Focus excelled when it came to headroom and legroom. This model being a Ghia, it featured many extras, such as an electric drivers’ seat, electric and heated mirrors, and front fogs. 2005 Fiat Multipla 1.9JTD Dynamic A significant downgrade from the gorgeous pre-facelift, of course. Not that bad of a car though, with this example showing off its practicality with a full-to-the-brim boot. What makes this car bad is the “Up the Dubs” sticker in the back window, tormenting me. It’s had the same owner since July 2012 - very nice! When the Multipla was first released in ‘98, people didn’t like it. They couldn’t appreciate its beauty. It was rightfully selected as Top Gear’s Car of the Year 2000 due to its practicality. They also unfairly titled it the Ugliest Car, but nevermind. Fiat performed a botched plastic surgery job on the Multipla in 2004, and made it look less offensive, but it’s frankly a little bit boring. At least the intelligent six seat layout was preserved. The interior remained fairly unchanged, so the weird, wacky and wonderful dashboard was kept. Visibility was excellent due to massive windows all-round. The big van-like wing mirrors were a great help too. 1995 Volvo 480 2.0 For #volvoweek by @scrap_survivors A rare 400 Series Volvo found on a City Centre street - what could be better! I don’t know or care much about Volvos, but I know these cars are highly regarded, and just look at those pop-up headlights! The 480 was produced from 1986-1995, making this a late model. Its purpose was to explore a new segment Volvo hadn’t entered before - that being hatchbacks. It’s interior was one of the strangest of any Volvo ever made. Two seats were in the front, and the back had two individual seats as well. 2000 Fiat Seicento 0.9 S For #centotuesday by @car.spotting.bucks I’ve recently decided not to post pictures of cars if I don’t have a front shot. In this case, I’m willing to make an exception. For #centotuesday, here’s a Fiat Seicento, nearly identical to mine. Built in Fiat’s plant in Tychy, Poland, the Seicento was designed as a replacement for the Cinquecento, and to appeal to young women just starting to drive, middle-aged housewives, and elderly ladies. It feels better than its predecessor, although interior space was still incredibly limited. I can confirm however, that I can fit in the boot of a Fiat Seicento 😊 but I’m about all there’s space for. This one, like mine, is a basic S model, which featured very very few luxuries. The interior is interesting, and the seats are reasonable. However, power steering and airbags were optional extras. A two-star crash test rating wasn’t attractive (I try not to think about that). 2001 Renault Megane 1.4 Dynamique Coupe In celebration of @tigger_collins buying his new car - a Renault Megane 1.4 Dynamique Saloon Classic - I have decided to dedicate this post to “Megan” which is the name given to the new whip. I consider this car a sort of sportier, trendier Dublin cousin to Megan. Anyway, the Renault Megane was introduced in 1995 and the Coupe version released in 1996. This gorgeous little car even made it as far as rally races. The front of the Megane is inspired by the 60s Renault 16. The interior was understandably cramped in the back, but room was reasonable in the front. It featured front bucket seats and cool oval-shaped vents. The dashboard had some slight differences in comparison to the other models in the Megane range, white dials with red needles were a subtle touch, making the car look ever so slightly sportier. One thing the Megane Coupe did well was handling. 1999 Honda Civic 1.5i LS Just look at this pristine gold spec VTEC Civic! This one is a sixth-generation model, a car that’s getting rare in Irish roads! The sixth-generation Honda Civic began production in 1995 with 3-door hatchback, 4-door saloon and a 2-door coupe bodies available. It was longer and taller than its predecessor, and a bigger air intake was added. It featured a simplistic interior, complete with cloth seats and a black dashboard. All specs were fitted with both driver and passenger airbags, and most featured ABS brakes too. Legroom was plentiful in the rear, considering the size of the car. Before I talk about the car, let me give you a bit of history about the manufacturer! Carl F. W. Borgward GmbH was founded in Bremen, West Germany. It can trace its roots back to the companies Hansa Automobilgesellschaft and NAMAG, the company which produced the Lloyd car. The first vehicle designed by Carl Borgward was the 1924 Blitzkarren (lightning cart), a minuscule three-wheeler van with just 2hp! 2007 Honda Legend 3.5 V6 SH-AWD This is probably one of the coolest and rarest cars I’ve ever spotted. A Honda Legend 3.5 V6 parked in a posh South Dublin suburb! The fourth generation Honda Legend was launched on the 4th of October 2004 and was crowned Japan’s Car of the Year for 2004-2005, the fourth time in five years that Honda had one the title. This particular car has a system called “Super Handling All-Wheel Drive” (SH-AWD). The car was also featured on Car and Driver’s Ten Best List in 2005, and garnered a CNET.com Editor’s Choice Award for Top Tech Car. While the Legend was reviewed well by critics, it did not sell well. Dealers and enthusiasts claimed that the cause of this lack of success was mainly due to the fact that it was smaller than other Japanese flagship saloons and had no V8 option.
