24/4/2003. 21 years ago. Having been to every home leg on the road to Seville, and many nights in watching the away legs in the flat me and the Bhoys shared, I’m now working abroad and unable to watch the second leg of the semi final. I can’t help myself and have to go to the phone box outside to call the landline of the flat for an update. I’m hearing we dont look like scoring. Jump back into the venue I’m in, then can’t resist again a while later. Call the flat again. A massive cheer goes up while I’m on the phone and the line goes dead. You aren’t carrying an iPhone in those days. I’m stood myself, in Corfu, wondering what is going on. Eventually get the word we’ve made it. I’m absolutely ecstatic and go back in to share the news with my unimpressed new colleagues from down south. They don’t get what it means to me, they’d realise over the course of that summer how important Celtic are to me. I’m sure my pals all headed into Sauchiehall street that night, went to the Garage then into a massive huddle on the street. I loved working abroad, but really missed not being home for the final. Just a wee post, no football top included: Had to comment on a lot of kindness that was shown to my wee family last night at the @celticfcwomen game. I reflected on this when I got home. My kids have been well looked after at the games since we started consistently going in January last year. Last night my kids were given face painting for free on arrival by another supporter, given treats by a steward (for the umpteenth time) who has been so good to them whenever we go to Airdrie, and given some fan merch by @teec3_scotland as we were leaving. Nobody asks for, or expects anything in return, there’s a real community feel to the fan base. I won’t name who (as I wouldn’t want them inundated) but my kids were then given a gift from someone at @celticfcwomen that was totally unexpected, and way above & beyond the scope of their role. Unbelievable generosity. One of the kids cried ‘happy tears’ all the way home, they’ve never done that before! We are very grateful. If you’re considering going, take the leap and go and watch the Ghirls this Sunday at Parkhead. And please have a look at @teec3_scotland, they are leading the way with the merch for the women’s team. As for on the pitch, the ghirls finally went top of the league after a 1-0 win v Hibs, and a 1-0 defeat for *Rangers. Delighted to say we have another @celticfcwomen player following the page. Goalscoring defender and @irelandfootball international @caitlinhayes5 has been kind enough to get involved. There are many things I could say about Caitlin and the effect she has had on my daughters in the last 18 months or so. It’s fair to say she is their first hero. She took time with them when they were lucky enough to be mascots in front of 10,000 people at Celtic park, and has the unique gift of making every kid at the games feel like they are the only one there. I know my kids are on a high afterwards. Always the first one over to the kids, and the last to leave. Had a few chats with her dad at games too. He’s a very down to earth guy and it’s clear it’s important to that family to be a good person 👍🍀 As for the football, it speaks for itself. Got me thinking about a weekend I had back in 2000, it was decent. Oasis at gig on the green on the Saturday. Of course it was brilliant, although I can’t remember that much about it. I remember Primal Scream and Oasis being on, but not the Foo Fighters, Teenage fanclub or Shed Seven 😩😂 The very next day I was at the Glasgow Derby. Scorching hot, Celtic are 3 up straight away. Finishes Celtic 6 *Rangers 2. It just seemed like Celtic came flying out of the traps that day and everything changed. That team had so many top players in it. Whenever I see Henrik’s chip over Klos on tv, I always listen out for the thud of thousands of seats as everyone got the their feet after he nutmegged Konterman. I was behind that goal in the upper Jock Stein stand in my old season ticket. Can still picture it 😀 Noel Gallagher was there that day too. ‘Roll with it’ played at the end and everything was just brilliant in life at that point. I loved it. They wore this top that day. It’s seen better days but it’s a lovely top and would fit in with modern day football. This top could clearly do with a wash after all these years, however I’m certain I’d lose the Carlsberg sponsor and maybe some other bits. I’m a bit scared to ruin it. I bought this vinyl letter remover the other day. The problem with older kits sponsors (Carling in particular) is that it sometimes doesn’t survive a wash. The glue just gives up. I have a few in this category that I’ll show a before and after when I’ve tried removing the remaining parts of the sponsor. I always prefer a sponsorless top anyway. This top is one of the few that I think would look worse without the sponsor. I think I’ll just leave it as is 😀 Anyway, off to look out the cagoule and fake swagger for the gig tonight. Yesterday we thought we’d explore a little of the Celtic Way footpath by walking from St Germans to Looe. The Celtic Way is a new long distance walking route that follows joins churches from St Germans to Penzance. Our leg to Looe was a pleasant mixture of country lanes, footpaths and coast path. The sea was a little too choppy for swimming in, but on another day I would have done, as there were a number of little coves suitable for a dip. We stopped at one of our favourite places, the Beach House in Seaton, for tea and cakes. The Celtic Way goes via Downderry to take in the church there, and had we followed it exactly would have been about ten miles. We took a short cut and headed straight to Seaton, which reduced our distance by a couple of miles. We then had the pleasure of taking the train home; views from the Looe Valley line are second to none at this time. According to Irish mythology, Samhain (like Bealtaine) was a time when the 'doorways' to the Otherworld opened, allowing supernatural beings and the souls of the dead to come into our world; while Bealtaine was a summer festival for the living, Samhain "was essentially a festival for the dead". SAMHAIN TRADITIONS The implications of missing such milestones were immense. Failure to recognise them was said to result in illness, death or terrible luck. Early texts suggest that participation in Samhain was mandatory for the ancient Celts. As the realm of the living merged with the magical, protective measures were a must. In order to secure protection for livestock and prevent spiritual mischief, offerings to the fae folk were left out. Feasts and silent suppers would be observed on Samhain Eve, and a place was set at the head of the table for the ancestors. This was thought to not only ensure the fertility of the land, but secure good luck for ancestral lineages. The Otherworld was a tricky place, populated not only by the newly departed, but also with powerful gods, whose intentions were as varying as that of the human realm.
