"This is my very first “market experience” although I have been making my thistles since around lockdown. I used to live abroad and appreciated any small reminders of home so decided to develop something unique that could be easily packaged and sent to family and friends across the globe. They seemed to like what I was creating and encouraged me to consider selling them, so here I am! The thistles, in the more traditional purples (or less obvious colour schemes) have endless ways of being displayed ~ in small vases, as singles or in bunches ~ with or without foliage. This drawing by #Scottishartist Hector Chalmers (1848-1943) was made on drawing board. It is, in all probability a scene in #Fife since Chalmers' summer was spent on its coast, and this drawing was bought with a similar work on the same board featuring Largo a little along that cost. Preston Cottage at #Culross (now renamed Pound Cottage) was described by Andrew S. Cunningham in 1902 as 'let on lease by the Earl of Elgin, to Mr Hector Chalmers, artist, Edinburgh, and a prettier cottage and grounds will not be found on the banks of the Forth between Stirling and the East Neuk of "The Kingdom."' There were works by Eugène Boudin and L.S. Lowry, but overwhelmingly his collection was Scottish. He bought paintings by Edward Atkinson Hornell and a large number of giant canvasses by William McTaggart. Two of those hung on the staircase of Wilby House where he stayed, and as a child on visits to my grandparents, I had a terror of passing beneath them on my way to bed, in case one fell and crushed me. The content was in any case bleak: children being drenched on a storm-stricken beach from which there might be no rescue. But there were many gentler images in his house represented by the four Scottish colourists S.J. Peploe, J.D. Ferguson, George Leslie Hunter and Francis Cadell…..
