Credit to iPhones and also nature for photos that beg to be taken, for when the light is hitting exactly right. But also, metaphorically, when a planet is healing itself, forcing us to slow down and reevaluate priorities, it’s a restart. And it’s knowing the friends you can send SOS messages and you talk on the phone, the zoom calls with your girl-group in different time zones, and it’s FaceTiming your family. I’m not simplifying what living in the age of Covid has been- it’s certainly had disproportionate amounts of impact. For me, it’s definitely been a wake-up call to not take “normal” for granted. The reality of missing retirement parties and first birthdays pales in comparison to the big picture impact on the environment, spending time with family, the break from the hustle of the rat race, and the sense of solidarity, in a world that’s finally starting to do the work to become one. #june #chapter6 #2020 #gratitude #bethechange #changthesystem
Reflections on the first weeks of 2020: 1. This January marks the 2 year anniversary of Back to Nature Blog, and I feel like I haven’t accomplished anything. I want to do something of magnitude for the earth, and I keep falling short. 2. They say consistency equals success on Instagram. If that’s the case, I’ve been way off the mark for all of 2019. 3. What I really want is to use my music as a medium through which we can awaken into a state of consciousness in harmony with the earth. 4. I realize that sounds really hippy dippy trippy. I also need to do something more concrete. But I feel like I’ve been slacking so hard in that department. Because of music. Because of how much it demands from me emotionally, and how much time it takes to hone my craft. 5. I wonder how I can be tinkering with music when the entirety of Australia is burning, and 1 BILLION animals have died? How can my music make that better? 6. How can anything I do actually make it better? It seems like everywhere I turn there’s a big mess. The US government is a joke. We’re destroying entire ecosystems with fracking, with the burning of fossil fuels, and consumerism. Warming sea temperatures are killing coral reefs, melting the ice caps, causing earthquakes in Puerto Rico, flooding in Jakarta. The entirety of Australia is on fire. And 1 BILLION animals have died. 7. The German’s call this heart aching awareness of the horrors of the world “Weltschmerz” - “World Pain”. 8. Maybe the solution is just to try my best. Every day. And hope that by doing that others will wake up and give a damn too. The truth is as long as we stay silent on these issues, nothing can ever change. But even if I scream at the top of my lungs, will anyone even hear me? 9. All I can do is use my voice to speak up against the things I don’t agree with, strive to create the least amount of waste I can, divest from fossil fuels wherever possible, and pray every day for the collective awakening of humanity. 10. I realize I am but one drop in the vast ocean of humanity. Every single one of our voices is important in creating a better world. We are not alone. We are in this together. I feel the suffering in the world quite acutely. I always have. I have an extreme aversion to violence, and social issues, like homelessness, or the migrant children detention camps, cause me physical pain. Similarly, I feel violence against the earth extremely intensely. To me the earth is a living, breathing being that deserves our respect reflected in every action. That's why for me, #lowwasteliving is a sacred spiritual practice of loving the earth intentionally, and allowing all my actions be aligned with that core truth. I have no idea if it makes a difference. Or enough of a difference. When I see all the fires in California, and in Australia, and hear of all the wild animals who have been burned, all the people who have been displaced and lost their homes, I wonder, am I doing enough? The sincerest prayer in my heart every day is that we humans may awaken to the fact that how our society functions is damaging the planet, perhaps beyond the point of repair. While individual action isn't the whole picture, I believe it is an integral piece of solving climate change. We all have the power to do something, even if it is so small as to not be noticed by anyone but you. That's why I say no to single use plastics, religiously compost every scrap I can, and reduce my waste in every way I know how. Because it is my way of taking a stand, even if it is a very small way. Where does our water come from in Denver? I recently had to vote on Proposition DD, all about how to fund the Colorado Water Plan. So I did a bunch of research about the Colorado Water Plan. And learned that our water in Denver comes from watersheds in the mountains, from dammed rivers that created alpine reservoirs. The scary thing, is that with the influx of people moving into Denver over the last 5 years, water could run out. Which would require the potential for creating more reservoirs, which would destroy pristine forest, and vulnerable watersheds. It made me start to think about how I use water, and how I want to be much more intentional about my water usage going forward. The truth is, the Colorado Water Plan doesn't go far enough. It mentions conservation, but what are they truly doing to help citizens conserve water? They mention watershed restoration, but are they actually doing that? I don't know how I can help. I guess I'm just trying to raise awareness around water usage, and that we can't take our precious water for granted! It is a precious resource, one that will become more precious as climate change advances. What are some good ways to conserve water? I'm looking for tips!!
I recently had someone remind me that bulk shopping is not without its in store waste. True - the food comes to the store in large plastic bags or cardboard. It is not entirely without waste. BUT it is still less wasteful to bring your own reusable bags and shop in bulk, because it requires much less packaging than the small portions sold in hard to recycle plastics. It just simply requires less resources! I recently went to a talk in Boulder with the Godmother of #zerowaste, Bea Johnson of @zerowastehome, and she answered this very question. Her response was to support more local bulk stores like @therefillrevolution in Boulder, instead of stores like Whole Foods, who have more packaging involved in their bulk shopping process, and often don't allow customers to bring their own containers anyways (I still do, despite knowing it's not allowed because I don't care about rules haha!). The truth is that until we have a true #circulareconomy that doesn't create waste as a byproduct of almost everything we do, there will be some waste created. We have to strive to create the least amount of waste possible in every situation. What do you all think? Is #bulkshopping better than buying packaged foods?
Yes this is a picture of my laundry haha! But I just wanted to talk quickly about why I hang dry my clothes. Firstly, less wear on the items themselves. I love my clothes, most of which are secondhand, and I want them to last as long as possible! Dryers can cause extra wear and tear due to the excess heat. Secondly, dryers run off fossil fuels, unless you have wind or solar. And we all know how bad burning fossil fuels is for the environment. I also avoid washing with hot water, and use all natural biodegradable detergent that I buy in #bulk from @therefillrevolution. These little changes in lifestyle add up and end up making a big difference! What other eco laundry tips do you guys have?
Here's my #bulkshopping haul from this month. I shop in bulk for several reasons - it saves SO. MUCH. PACKAGING. It is also the cheaper option. I oscillate between @sprouts, and @wholefoods, and between the two, I'm able to get the majority of my food #packagefree. To go bulk shopping, all you need are some reusable bags. I use the @simple_ecology brand, which are sold on Amazon for a very reasonable price. But any reusable bag will do. Even paper bags are better than plastic because they are compostable at the end of their life. If you want to bring your mason jars, which I often do for items like flour and peanut butter, just ask the customer service desk to weigh your jars prior to filling them so they can subtract the tare from the total weight at checkout. Super easy! And so good for the environment. Food packaging adds millions of tons of waste to landfills each year. It also contributes to litter that could end up in the ocean and kill wildlife, not to mention the resources used to make these single use items which contributes heavily to the emissions of CO2. I finally found bar soap WITHOUT #palmoil!! I’m thrilled. @therefillrevolution in Boulder sells it in store and online. Palm oil is responsible for immense deforestation in Borneo, and around the world, destroying habitat for orangutans, and many other beautiful and endangered animals. It also produces a lot of CO2 due to clear cutting of the trees to harvest the oil. It is in 50% of all packaged foods, and nearly all bar soap. I do my best to avoid it whenever possible by choosing products without palm oil. I am a religious label reader!! This bar soap uses olive oil instead. I love it! What products have you found lately that sneakily contain palm oil?
The #climatestrike today was incredible. It feels so good to march alongside fellow citizens who care just as much as I do! With all the craziness that has been going on lately in the world, it's so good to people waking up and truly understanding the predicament we face - either we change the way we live, or we will cease to have the privilege of living on this beautiful planet. It was amazing to hear the chanting to end the era of fossil fuels, to see the myriad signs calling for climate justice, the respect of our mother earth, and calling out the idiocy of climate change deniers. Now let's truly take action to bring this new paradigm into being! This is why I reduce my waste, because I truly believe that one person at a time we can change the mindset of the culture that created these problems in the first place. My #plasticfreejuly wasn't very #plasticfree. In fact, I consumed more plastic in July than I have so far in all of 2019. I was traveling, and could have consumed much more plastic. There was every opportunity every time I needed to get food. That's where my handy #lowwaste travel kit came into play, and I was able to avoid a lot of single use plastics using it. Swipe to see a photo. I was also able to compost some of my food scraps where available. And I could have consumed much less by being stricter with myself about not buying packaged foods. But it's hard when you're stranded in a train station, or airport and need to eat. And so sometimes I had no choice but to consume plastic, and create waste in the process. I did my very best! I avoided waste where I could, and tried not to beat myself up when I couldn't. Because the truth is, I am part of a much larger system that creates waste as an end product. And we need to work on changing that system just as much as we need to reduce our consumption of products that create waste. Now I'm home, and I was so thrilled to go #bulkshopping, to compost every last bit of my food scraps, paper waste, and to return to my luxury low waste life. I am left feeling unsure of what I want my activism to be. I want to do everything in my power to change the world, but I feel so small and insignificant in the face of such a huge global problem. I want to believe in the power of reducing our waste, and yet I see the need for bigger action still. Do you all have any suggestions on ways to make even bigger change? I'd love your help!
