I’m partnering with my buddies at WasteNet @invercargillcitycouncil / @goredistrictcouncil / @southlanddistrict to bring my ‘SIMPLE SWAPS’ philosophies to the Tamariki of Southland through the modality of theatre, actions and song 🎶 WHAT IS THE SIMPLE SWAPS PHILOSOPHY? Simple Swaps means exchanging something that can only be used once (ie, single-use coffee cup, bottle, cling wrap, plastic straw) for something that can be used again and again). They have the name “Simple swaps” because the answer to reducing waste is really as simple as reusing items instead of making new waste that goes directly to landfill. Helping tamariki to understand that recycling is NOT the solution and that a very minimal amount of waste is recycled is also key. Our recycling station on the hui day will help to emphasise this. Normalising the reuse of items rather than our “convenience” approach to consuming is what we are aiming for. Children have a unique opportunity to inspire their families and take home learnings around how we can all make a change. The Earth Day theme for 2024, Planet vs. Plastics, unites individuals, businesses, governments, churches, unions, students, parents, and non-governmental organizations in a resolute commitment to demand a 60% reduction in all plastic production by 2040 and the ultimate goal of creating a plastic-free future for future generations. Yesterday, some of our team participated in a march to promote a strong Global Plastics Treaty. The fourth round of negotiations began today in Ottawa for this history-making event in the fight against plastic.
