Hello on cycling week 49 We're back to Chile. This time on wheels we reached the capital, Santiago. It's been a while since we visited such a big city. Traveling by bike around this mega city was not easy, but as in many cases before, thanks to a good coincidence we had a place to stay. We were invited by Jenifer and Julio, the exact same couple that we accidentally met weeks ago in El Calafate on our way to Perrito Moreno Glaciar. Who would have thought that after the hitchhiking ride, our paths would cross several times during the trip and at the end we will be invited to their home. As you can see, friendship is sometimes born under unexpected circumstances. During our stay in Santiago, we not only explored the city, but also visited @decathloncl for a much-needed bike service and to update some of our equipment. Lucky we found all what we need it and our bikes were taking a good care of. Thanks to our friends, we visited Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, two very different cities and for the first time we seen and touched the Pacific Ocean. After fantastic days together we had to say goodbye and we are on our way North to Atacama desert. Outside the Pepper Pot Restaurant, Hatch resident Rodrigo Varela is chatting with friends and family when a fire engine’s siren interrupts them. As the vehicle turns onto West Hall Street, Varela waves to the driver, who is followed by a stream of other Hatch Valley residents in tractors and cars decorated with the indelible symbols of southern New Mexico: Hatch chile, green and red. The Hatch Chile Festival has happened for every year but one, 2020, when the pandemic hit. For a while it was unknown whether there would be a festival in 2021. That was when business owners and residents came to Lisa Neal, president of the Hatch Chamber of Commerce, and told her that they couldn’t go another year without it. Hatch chile, after all, enjoys worldwide fame. Grocery stores throughout the nation promote roasting events, chefs proclaim their use in a variety of cuisines, and residents love their small town’s biggest annual celebration. The festival committee decided to revive the chile festival and move it into town that year, in part to provide better economic opportunities for businesses. But the festival is not the only time people visit the valley. People come all times of year, including in June, when they think they will load up on the early crop, only to learn it’s not ready, says Chile Festival Queen coordinator Bernadette Acosta. The chile season typically starts in mid-July (though this year’s started in early July) and ends when the first freeze hits in late October or early November. “Chile has become the lifeline of the Hatch Valley,” Acosta says. Earlier this week, I stopped by, found a perfectly sunny spot and ordered the recently introduced Pepper Steak Sandwich. Garnished with the eatery's always delicately crisp and zestily seasoned rosemary fries (the other side option is vinaigrette greens), the sandwich was a delicious mosaic of sautéed sirloin beef strips, bell pepper, onion and green peppercorn on a toasted French roll with Emmental cheese and a tasty au jus. LICENSE TO DRIVE... AND SOAR: A new specialty license plate proposed as a potential fundraiser for downtown TorC's nonprofit Geronimo Springs Museum — an important city and Sierra County historical and tourism resource for half a century — has been gathering support. The currently favored plate design, one of three prototypes developed by local resident Daniel Steele, an alternate board member of the Sierra County Historical Society and a noted vintage license plate collector, sports an interstellar theme inspired by New Mexico's growing role in the commercial aerospace industry. According to Steele, the "Space New Mexico" plate is being sponsored in the state legislature by NM House District 38 Rep. Tara Jaramillo (lead) and NM House District 37 Rep. Joanne Ferrary. If approved in the next legislative session, the plate would become available for $37/year — $25 of which would go to the museum. In addition to being a source of funding, Steele told me that the plate would "bring a lot of positivity to the museum." The process of advancing the plate concept and getting it approved, he added, "has really been a challenge. CHRISTMAS EVE TREAT FEST at Dino's Hodgepodge Lodge!
