This changes us from the other countries we have crossed. The only small problem is refueling. We buy a lot of food in the towns, and cook and camp between them. We also were lucky to use the @warmshowers_org community to find a free room and new friends in small villages. December 2023. The road to the Taman Negara National Park was wonderful. I camped at a locked car park for the night before going into the national park. It was nice and quiet. The sounds of nature surrounded me. I felt like I was already in the jungle, although it was across the river. The next morning I took an early boat to the park. It was great to step into the huge forest. Massive trees towered above me. I found one of the climber trees forming a natural swing. Six months in South Africa, 2,500 miles biked, and 2,000 miles of road tripping through the country. South Africa was one of my favorite counties to cycle. There was so much to see and do that we only cycled 50% of the time! Highlights included: exploring the unique plants of Richtersveld NP, cycling along endless dirt road networks, a weeks of safari drives in Kruger National Park, amazing hikes in every corner, exploring the culinary delights of Cape Town, the friendly local people, camping in vast deserts, penguins, and taking dips in secluded swimming holes. 〈Glennallen→Tok〉 The soil of Alaska is so huge. I went ahead from Glennallen day by day but couldn't easily reach to the intersection of Tok. No chaces to see people along the road and that made me feel I was in desert. However air gradually got warmer and snow started to disappear. Shikoku, Japan. De #shikokuhenro is een pelgrimstocht langs 88 tempels op het eiland #shikoku. Zo eindigen we onze reis zoals we die zijn begonnen. Als pelgrims. Bij iedere tempel doe je een aantal rituelen en dan haal je een stempel + kalligrafie. De hele route is ruim 1200Km dus we hebben nog even te gaan. Vroeger liepen monniken deze tocht om verlichting te zoeken. Voor ons is de reden minder spiritueel. When we awoke, the weather forecast had changed its mind, the window it had suggested for good weather had closed, so we changed our plans and headed back north towards the national park by bike hoping to experience the park before the weather broke. We pedalled towards the national park and were gutted when it came into view with the famous Torres obscured by clouds...especially frustrating when the skies were so clear in every other direction! We pedalled into the park anyway, bumping into @rich_tb and @katehext along the way. Not long after the park entrance, a man in a truck told us there was a puma ahead! We pedalled on a little further and sure enough on the opposite hillside there was a puma feasting on a guanaco! Next blog is up... I stayed at a well-known rest stop for travellers in Bukittinggi, Hotel Hello Guesthouse, but it didn’t have air conditioning. Luckily, it’s over 1,000m and was a bit more bearable. Plus the heavy storms every night kept the temperature down. The next day was a write-off and my body just needed to recover but I felt a cold coming and knew it might take longer than expected. Adios Colombia 👋🏻🥹 Cette dernière partie au sud de la Colombie nous aura coupé le souffle, par sa beauté et sa difficulté aussi ! On entre sur la cordillère des Andes, qu'on va suivre jusqu'au bout. La Colombie aura été une belle entrée en matière, et malgré son histoire tourmentée, les habitants sourient à la vie et nous ont accueilli à bras ouverts. C'est un pays riche d'une grande diversité de paysages, de végétation, où tout pousse en abondance 🌿 On a quand même moins aimé les chiens qui nous sautent dessus en aboyant, les propriétaires regardant sans bouger, les fumées noires des camions et voitures, et les gens qui jettent leur détritus dans la nature... Mais en vélo c'est facile, on trouve de quoi manger partout, les gens nous laissent camper facilement, et les véhicules s'écartent largement en nous dépassant, quand on a pas des klaxons d'encouragement 🚘 ❤️ Mention spéciale pour Mateo, qui accueille les cyclo voyageurs chez lui à Pasto. Une vraie casa de bici depuis 2015, où on se sent comme à la maison. São Paulo x Porto Alegre de fixa - Dia 1 O dia começou cedo, 6h da manhã já estava me despedindo da minha companheira e seguindo em direção a estação Butantã para encontrar o Joab. Já nos seguimos pelas redes sociais a algum tempo mas essa foi a primeira vez que nos encontramos pessoalmente, que pessoa incrível! E pedala forte demais hahaha Seguimos juntos por cerca de 70km, depois da cidade de Juquitiba segui sozinho rumo ao meu destino do dia. Foi aí que começou uma sequência de furos. A minha fita antifuro estava zoada e rasgou 2 câmaras de ar, fiquei sem reserva e tive que pedalar por cerca de 17km com o pneu dianteiro furado. Cheguei em Miracatu e consegui comprar 2 câmaras de ar e alguns remendos, meti marcha até escurecer e por volta das 19h cheguei próximo a cidade de Jacupiranga, fiquei numa parada de caminhoneiros, rolou banho gratuito e um cantinho seguro pra armar minha rede. Ich verbrachte ein paar Tage in Shiraz, um die Reiseagentur zu bezahlen, die mir beim Visa-Antrag geholfen hatte, sowie um mein Visum zu verlängern. Untergebracht war ich in einem schönen, kleinen Hostel, welches in einem der vielen traditionellen Häuser eingerichtet war. Ich fuhr natürlich eine kleine Besichtigungsrunde, wie zur Festung Karim Kahns, einem Herrscher der Zand-Dynastie Persiens, zum Hafez-Grab, einem berühmten Dichter aus Shiraz, und zur Vakil-Moschee mit ihrer großen Gebetshalle. Von Zeit zu Zeit genieße ich es in Hostels zu schlafen, weil sich manchmal coole Leute zusammenfinden. So zog ich den einen Tag mit der internationalen Connection los und besuchte den Salzsee nahe Shiraz. Am nächsten Tag traf ich noch auf Yakob, der beiläufig auf der Straße gehört hatte dass ich mit dem Rad unterwegs bin und er selber ein Fahrrad-Begeisterter ist. Wir aßen dann gemeinsam zu Mittag. Es waren einfach ein paar Tage zum Abschalten und genießen. 🙂 I spent a few days in Shiraz to pay the travel agency that had helped me with my visa application and to extend my visa. I stayed in a lovely little hostel, which was set up in one of the many traditional houses. Of course, I went on a little sightseeing tour, such as to the fortress of Karim Kahn, a ruler of the Zand dynasty of Persia, to the tomb of Hafez, a famous poet from Shiraz, and to the Vakil Mosque with its large prayer hall. From time to time I enjoy sleeping in hostels because sometimes cool people get together. So one day I went out with the international connection and visited the salt lake near Shiraz. The next day I met Yakob, who had casually heard on the street that I was travelling by bike and he himself is a bike enthusiast. We then had lunch together. Sharing the road with a legend. Lawrence rides his single speed bike that doesn’t have brakes 100 km every weekend from where he works in South Africa to visit his family in Eswatini. Each weekend spends about as much time awake with his family as he does riding to and from home. We were lucky enough to run into him for the last bit of his ride. We talked about his life philosophy, why he loves cycling, and the highs and lows of being from Eswatini. It’s always inspiring to meet people that also love traveling by bike, but doing it in different ways. There are plenty of buses that Lawrence could take home, he loves cycling, and saving money on the bus fair doesn’t hurt either. Lawrence was just one of the many incredibly kind and welcoming people we met in Eswatini. As we leave the country it will stay with my as the country with the kindest people.

At least I have straightforward answers to those, but this is one I hardly have figured out myself, let alone give a satisfactory answer on the fly on the side of the road... After a terrible night's sleep, we were torn as to what to do! No one was enthusiastic for a day of hanging out at the petrol station, but it was a long way to the first spot where we were sure we had protected camping and we were going to be pedalling into a very strong headwind. Eventually, we decided to go for it. @rich_tb suggested we form a pelotón and take it in turns to do 3km at the front. I think it was the only way we got through the day...progress was slow and only got slower as the wind got stronger! We were hit with brutal winds from the side blowing us sideways but somehow we muddled through. We were so grateful when the police station came into sight 78km later and we realised we have made it! To add insult to injury, the next morning we absolutely flew to the border with a beautiful tail wind! We crossed back into Chile...for the final time this trip and initially we decided to head south towards Puerto Natales with a plan to hitchhike back with backpacks and do some hiking in Torres del Paine. Into the Bissau-Guinean jungle 💚 We did a little detour on our way to Guinée Conakry to explore Cantanhez National Park and to try to meet wild chimpanzees as there are a few hundreds living in the area. We arrived at Jemberem after a day on beautiful pistes. The next morning at 6 am we were in the rainforest looking for chimpanzees! Thanks to our guide, @mamadu478 we found them pretty quickly. It was really amazing to see them on their palm trees waking up peacefully. But the most incredible is that the next day, on our way to the border, we heard some chimpanzees from the bike. So we went in the forest and we were able to see a whole family! This encounter was really special and unexpected, I felt so lucky, and I can't wait to see more wildlife in the next countries. WE BIKED FOR 6 MONTHS IN SOUTH AFRICA 🥳 Let’s discuss the country's reputation for crime… Yes, it’s here, and yes, it can be dangerous. The good news is that crime is confined to localised areas, making it easy to avoid. As a result, we were never threatened or robbed and felt safe 99.99% of the time. Small towns are usually quite safe, but cities contain lots of roads and suburbs to avoid. Make sure to ask the local people where to go, and where to avoid, and it’s unlikely you’ll have any problems. 👍🏻 The off-road biking adventures in the country feel endless. There are dirt tracks in every direction and the backdrops are unbelievably dramatic! We couldn’t believe the places we got to bike and camp through - it was a new adventure every day. 💎 South Africa is home to some of the most pristine environments on Earth, and the national parks are truly epic places. Kruger is famous for a reason: the sheer scale, raw beauty, and diversity of animals are incredible. But the dozen other NPs we visited were virtually as good, including Table Mountain! If you want your mind blown by rare plants and their unique adaptations, visit Richtersveld, the only arid biodiversity hotspot on earth! If you’re into good food and wine, you will be in heaven in South Africa. The region around Cape Town is where to take your taste buds on a date - it’s a foodie's dream. The best wines we sampled were in Stellenbosch. Don’t miss a trip to Lesotho, the landlocked country in South Africa, as it has a completely different culture and traditions. The entire country is at altitude, with great views everywhere, and the Basotho people ride around on horses wearing blankets! What’s not to like? And lastly, South Africa has a dark history that is worth understanding. We honestly couldn’t believe the depths of the institutionalised racial segregation that ended just 30 years ago. You will still find that racism permeates society, with many kindhearted, well-meaning locals completely clueless about their racism. But it’s best to remind yourself of the beliefs these people were taught from a young age - if this was your worldview for a long time, you too might still think this way. 🤷♂️
It was a bit of a mad rush to the immigration office, he wanted to leave early. It took a couple of hours but I had my visa extension. I then decided to visit the Borobudur Temple, the immigration officer was nearby. It's an amazing structure and took over 100 years to build. Segmento 3 "The Springbok Horn Road"✅ Atravesando montañas, el paso Van Rhym's 600 mts de desnivel en 9 km, Reserva natural Gannabos y llegando hasta la ruta principal #7, al comienzo ruta de mucha arena suelta de inmersión en la naturaleza, luego asfalto con muchas subidas y bajadas hasta llegar a la ruta principal, de ahí en direccion norte hasta Springbok con mucho calor de día y frio en la noche, se experimentan muchas sensaciones que hacen que esto valga la pena, se trata no solo de ir si no de sentir, y me volví amante del camino mas que del destino.
