Stop watching series and films with English subtitles ✋ I get it, sometimes it’s overwhelming if you can’t understand anything and you decide to turn them on just for a bit. The problem is, the minute you turn on the English subtitles your brain is no longer thinking in Mandarin. If it’s no longer thinking in Mandarin, you will of course no longer be learning anything. How can you remedy this? It’s imperative you leave only the Chinese subtitles on. I would argue that this boosts not only your listening but also your reading skills. You begin to attribute sounds that you hear to the characters that you are reading and this can help you to signpost the dialogue even better. If you scroll to the last few posts in the carousel you’ll see an example of this. 看在____份上 = translated as “for the sake of” Whilst this does work in this scenario, I don’t think you should learn “translations”. They don’t describe the full breadth of usage that such a phrase can have. The best way to learn these types of phrases is to understand the emotions they convey and the scenario that you would use them in. Let me give an example: 看在___份上 A native nicely describes the scenario you would use this in. It is often used in a situation of someone being upset or feeling they have been done badly and forgiving the other party. 看在你爸的份上，我就不追究了 For the sake of your dad, I won’t pursue a lawsuit. 看在大红包的份上 For the sake of the large hongbao The girl feels she’s being done wrong by the guy, but decides to do him a favour anyway. Ten years ago this month I first visited the China Film Group production base in Huairou outside Beijing. Alongside recreated villages and fortress walls was a vast modern metropolis. Or at least the facades of one. Streets of Shanghai? Or some futuristic state? I still have no idea what film or tv production this set was created for, and it has long since been torn down. This visit was the beginning of a years-long adventure, as I researched and photographed over a dozen film production sites around China, eventually published as a photobook. Don’t watch a clip once and just expect the Chinese to stick with you ‼️ Here’s why Studies show that you need at least 7 repetitions of some material before you start memorising it. I’m not saying this to put you off, but instead to encourage you to not be hard on yourself and to not see rewinding or rewatching a clip as a sign that you SUCK. Rewatch it as many times as you need and let the jumble of words start to unravel for you. If repetition sounds like hell 🔥 for you, here are some ways to incorporate it into your life easily. 1. Watch stuff that is INTERESTING to you. Doesn’t matter what your Chinese professor or your friends say, do what suits you. Your engagement is what will enable you to repeat stuff without getting bored and as a result get fluent faster. 2. Songs are amazing for getting repetition in. Catchy verses and really understanding what you’re listening to is such an easy hack for learning languages. 3. Rewatch stuff with and without subtitles, alternating between the two. I promise it will feel like a different experience each time. You get the novelty of no subtitles, yet also the much needed repetition of the same sounds. YOLO Review 6.5/10 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a slice-of-life dramedy. More specifically, a film that uses comedic tones and focuses on the amateur world of sports. YOLO, directed by Jia Ling (most known for 2021’s “Hi, Mom”) is an endearing and traditional comedy that follows a woman in her 30’s as she finds purpose in life through the help of a boxing coach. Unfortunately for the simplistic yet charming premise, this film underutilizes its potential, as jarring shifts in tone and bland dialogue prevent the film from being more accessible to general audiences. However, I have to say that the performances are good and worthy of being in a triple-A blockbuster. In addition to directing, Jia Ling also plays the lead, Leying, a stay-at-home woman in her 30’s who’s been idling around for the last few years. She effectively captures the emotional range needed to make such an honest and upfront character work with the story, as Leying faces several challenges in her way to finding her place in society. It is clear what dedication and respect she has for the role, making her take on the character seem more realistic. Her boxing coach (Hao Kun) is played by Lei Jiayin and his plotline actually takes an inverse throughout the film. In the beginning, he is an optimistic and warm-hearted dreamer. However, after a tragic event, he changes to a pessimist, only slowly changing back at the end of the film. Unfortunately, this novelty effect doesn’t entirely progress to the rest of the film. A big aspect of this film is the comedy, and it’s done effectively in a good majority of the film. Despite this, the first act primarily relies on making jokes on how lazy Leying is at the time, making her portrayed as a nuisance when she’s more like a blunt sloth. Most of the jokes land, and the film shines when Leying and Hao Kun humorously interact with each other. My interest in this came from the sudden acquisition, and therefore, release of this film by Sony Pictures. While it could’ve been stronger in many areas, YOLO is still a fun dramedy that will keep you entertained for a good chunk of its 2hr10min runtime.

Как правило, их клиенты влипают в очень щекотливые и опасные ситуации. А персонаж Джеки из тех, кто своих в беде не бросает, а следует с ними в самое пекло, даже если противостоять приходится мафиозному синдикату численностью с небольшое государство. Поэтому не могу сказать, что роль Джеки Чана здесь второплановая, но суть её действительно сводится к кураторству и наставничеству молодого поколения китайских актёров. Невооружённым глазом заметно, что Джеки приложил руку к постановке трюков и боевых сцен. Увы, но всё вышесказанное, что могло показаться Вам похвалой, здесь скорее всего играет отрицательную характеристику для фильма. Ведь вместо того, чтобы придумать персонажам «Авангарда» какие-то свои особенности, фишки и стили ведения боя, им вменяют картонное подражание поведению героев Джеки Чана в десятках сыгранных им ролей до этого с гораздо большим апломбом, дерзостью и амбициями. А вместо придания сценарию объёма, мысли и свежести, китайские киноделы предпочитают идти проторенной сотни раз дорожкой, отвешивая настолько стандартные фразы в диалогах, что они просто в большинстве своём не жизнеспособны, сухие и чёрствые.
