Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scargiver – 2024 Dir. Zack Snyder Never have I felt like a movie has wasted my time than this. So, in response, this review is going to be short because I don’t want to waste yours either. The only good: the acting was okay (despite the script), the villain (while cliché) was fun to watch, and the cinematography and CG looked good. Everything else was awful. The story is bland, cliché and filled with utter rot. The characters didn’t mean anything, even with a couple of “meaningful” sacrifices thrown in. They had zero development other than a half-assed circle-jerk halfway through when Snyder realised he needed to give them a reason to be there. Up until that point, including Part 1, there had been no context for these characters. There was too much unnecessary, pointless slow-mo, too little effort given to the story and characters, and absolutely zero care for the overall craft. If this is what Zack Snyder thinks makes good sci-fi and filmmaking, I'm honestly shocked that Man of Steel was at least as half decent as it is. He wants to make more set in this universe, and I hope to God he doesn’t. Watch this film if you want to have some background noise, not if you want to be entertained. *Please remember, people are allowed their opinions. - 범죄도시 4 (THE ROUNDUP : PUNISHMENT) 스토리 : ★★★ 비쥬얼 : ★★★☆ 연출 : ★★★☆ 연기 : ★★★☆ - 별점 : ★★★☆ 추천지수 : 65% - 3편에서의 비판을 과하게 피드백을 수용한 속편. 스스로 갖고 있던 시리즈의 장점이 다 희석되어 그저 그런 범작 범죄영화가 되다. - 세계관과 소재는 좋았다. 관객들에게 친숙하여 어렵지 않으면서도 기존 시리즈와는 차별되는 느낌을 더할 수 있는 소재를 택했다. 기존 시리즈가 실물이 분명히 존재하고 대상이 명확하게 분명한 것들을 소재로 삼았다면(조선족과 조폭집단/해외 여행 인질극/마약과 비리경찰) 이번 시리즈는 온라인 불법 카지노, 코인경제 등 무형자상을 범죄 키워드로 삼아 기존 시리즈와 차별화를 꽤했고, 새로운 캐릭터 팀과의 협동 등 세계관을 더욱 확장했다. 이는 분명 좋은 시도다. - 스토리는 복잡해서 이야기를 푸는 것조차 버거웠던 3편에 비해서 복잡함을 덜고 더 쉽게 풀어내서 관객이 어렵지 않게 따라올 수 있는 수준. - 액션 또한 기존 시리즈의 장점을 그대로 갖고 가되, 빌런의 특성을 활용해 간결하면서도 잔인한 느낌을 더한 액션 시퀀스를 더했다. 여러 종류의 격투 스타일이 어우러지면서 나오는 쾌감, '과연 붙으면 어떻게 될까'에 대한 호기심을 충족시키며 나오는 재미는 쏠쏠했다. - 그러나 앞의 장점들은 대중성을 살려 단기적으로 쉽게 많은 사람들을 흡인할 수 있을지는 몰라도 장기적으로는 글쎄다. - 먼저 시리즈만의 장점이 소멸되고 있다. '범죄도시'는 시리즈 특유의 다크함, 잔혹함이 있었다. 단순히 비쥬얼적으로 잔인하기보다는, 예측하기 힘든 빌런의 돌발성이 있었고 더욱 범죄의 잔혹성을 은유적으로 드러냈다. 그런 돌발성으로 인해 난관이 발생하고 결과적으로 관객들은 마석도와 팀을 몰입해서 응원하게 되며 그렇기에 마지막 엔딩이 더욱 카타르시스가 느껴지게 된다. - 반면 4편은 시리즈의 이런 특징이 없다. 물론 이중 빌런을 활용 그런 분위기를 잡으려하지만 비중이 작고 존재감이 희미해 역부족이다. 결과적으로는 사람들이 기대하는 부분들은 많이 줄어들고 <베테랑>과 같은 경쾌하고 밝은 느낌으로만 남아버렸다. - 결국 박진감 넘치는 또는 긴장감/무게감이 주는 재미가 있느냐인데 <베테랑>은 전자쪽에 가깝다. 류승완 감독 특유의 리듬감 타는, 시원시원한 전개가 잘 산다. 하지만 <범죄도시 4>는 아쉽게도 그렇지 못하다. 애초에 '마석도'의 영화는 그런 영화가 아니다. 그렇다면 긴장감이 주는 쫀쫀함이 있느냐?그마저도 아쉽다. - 3편은 마석도는 사건을 거의 혼자 해결하는 슈퍼맨이 되었다. 주인공이 온갖 고초와 난관을 혼자 다 겪으면서도 너무 만능이니 긴장감이 떨어지는 역효과 발생. 4편은 이에 과하게 반응하여 무조건 팀으로 움직이고 그런 고초와 난관을 줄였다. 문제 너무 줄였다. 마석도와 팀도, 빌런들도 그다지 어렵지 않게 본인들이 원하는 결과를 얻으며 그 과정도 순탄하다. 3가 너무 꼬았다면 4는 너무 풀어버렸다. 이런 이유로 시리즈 특유의 긴장감, 쫀쫀함이 사라졌다. 이야기가 선명해서 따라가긴 쉽지만 그만큼 따라가는 재미가 사라진 셈. - 가장 심각한건 위의 이유들과 연계하여 캐릭터들이 매력없이 무미건조하다. 분명히 마석도 캐릭터는 매력적이고 여전히 웃기다. 강한 무력과 배치되는 엉뚱함, 개그감 그리고 그 속의 진지함. 여러 시리즈를 거치며 이미 자리를 잡았다. 장이수 캐릭터?물론 좋다. 이미 자리잡은 특징을 잘 살려 영화에 에너지와 볼륨을 불어넣는다. 다만 그 뿐이다. 존재만으로도 무게감을 불어넣고 잘 빚어진 캐릭터로 개연성을 담당했던 장첸/강해상. 반면 백창기와 장동철은 기능적으로만 빌런 역할로 소비되기 급급하다. 잔혹하고 똑똑하지만 그 점을 딱히 본인의 무기로 쓰지 못하고 마동석과 팀에게 전혀 긴장감을 부여하지 못한다. 마석도가 내부적인 난관에 부딪혔을 때, 그걸 밀어붙이는 동기도 급조된 듯 어색한 느낌도 지울 수 없다. - '범죄도시' 시리즈는 1~2편의 성공에 힘입어 3편까지 흥행에 성공했다.어느 정도 안정적인 시리즈물로 자리잡은 셈. 이런 방향이라면 이후 시리즈는 더 이상 믿고 보기는 어려울 수도 있다. 완성도 자체가 떨어졌던 3, 특징과 장점이 사라진 양산형 영화의 범작으로 나와버린 4. 대중성은 높아졌을지 몰라도 특색과 완성도가 사라진다면 관객이 계속 믿고 봐줄지는 장담할 수 없다.

Abigail (2024) @vue A kidnapping goes to shiz for a gang of miscreants when the little girl they've pinched turns out to be a vampire. New one from the people that gave us Ready Or Not and you'll see a lot of similarities between the two films. The golden brown hue of the movie, an old mansion as the setting, a death pitt and exploding bodies to name just a few. It's a fun movie which helps distract you from the fact some elements of the plot don't hang together too well. The movie does a few cool things with the expected tropes of the vampire movie. The cast has great chemistry and I have to admit to becoming a bit of Dan Stevens fan boy. It's very funny and very gory, I really had a fun time watching this one. From the trailer alone, it looked a lot of fun. Plus, Bill Skarsgard is ridiculous talented individual, love Jessica Rothe from the Happy Death Day movies, and Sam Raimi is one of the producers of the movie.  Well, the first 20 minutes started off a bit slow and some parts were a bit predictable. Rather than that, I had an amazing time with this, it was a blast. Bill Skarsgard was pretty awesome. You know, he is such an amazing actor, he doesn't need any dialogue. Plus, I really enjoyed watching Jessica Rothe in this and it is great to see Famke Janssen.  And love all the action sequences, they were outstanding. Do people deserve to be killed just because they don't live according to the standards we have built our life on? A little rant about the movie Amar Singh Chamkila. My thoughts are based solely on what i watched in the movie and there are many things which have been left out especially the caste discourse. Since I don't have enough knowledge on it i cannot speak about it here. "If Imtiaz Ali was genuinely interested in portraying the real Amar Singh Chamkila, he would have appreciated the singer’s choice to sing vulgar songs rather than depicting him as confused about whether to sing them or not. Chamkila consciously chose vulgarity. He claimed to emerge from his everyday lived experience as a Dalit by singing about his life and publicly speaking about the Dalit-Bahujan lifeworld. « COCO AVANT CHANEL » d’Anne FONTAINE avec Audrey Tautou, Benoît Poelvoorde et Alessandro Nivola (2009) Le scénario est bien construit, on ne s’ennuie pas une minute, ce n’est pas un sujet lourd c’est même agréable à regarder au vu des informations qu’ils renferment sur l’histoire de cette femme. Anne Fontaine pose en images les origines du style vestimentaire de la femme moderne, plus simple, plus affirmée, et moins une belle cruche satinée. Je dois avouer qu’elle connaît très bien son sujet qui a décidé de raconter le début de cette femme hors du commun qui m’a assez intéressé même si j’ai trouvé qu’il est un peu long à certains moments. La réalisation est soignée et les prises de vue sont agréables à l’œil, mais il manque quelque chose pour qu’elle soit brillante. La lumière est très belle, très bien travaillée et exploitée. Release Date: May 10th 2024 Maybe it’s because I haven’t been keeping up with the Planet of the Apes franchise very well, but this one just doesn’t get me excited. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (what a name) is set in the distant future where essentially apes and humans have switched roles. Apes seem to control almost everything and humans have devolved to where they can’t speak. They essentially exist in small hunter/gatherer groups trying to evade the apes. First of all, losing speech just doesn’t make much sense to me. I’m sure both humans and apes would evolve different languages and manners of speaking, but for humans to lose the ability to even speak amongst each other? That’s weird. This story seems to be about a young ape who forms some sort of relationship with a “special” human that the other apes want to capture. What’s so special about her? Well, she can speak for one thing, and also it’s amazingly the same language the apes are speaking. Impressive. Speaking of impressive, lots of the CGI from the trailer looks pretty cool, but jeez are some of the apes faces creepy. To be fair though, I think that’s something that’s seen throughout the franchise and I’m not sure how they could avoid it while still letting characters emote in human ways. I’m still going to Watch Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes when it comes out, but I think I might watch it when it drops to a streaming service rather than pay to see it in the theaters. I had eagerly been waiting for the movie Challengers to finally be released and today it opened in theaters. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, known for Call Me by Your Name, Challengers features actress Zendaya as a fiercely competitive tennis prodigy involved in a love triangle. There is tension throughout the movie, and the extraordinary techno soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross only adds to that. This is not a clichéd sports story meant to be inspirational, but rather a tale of ambition and backstabbing. There was plenty of product placement throughout the movie, but, if anything, it made the scenes feel more realistic. (물론 리즈절정의 주드로 외모가 아름답긴 했다…) 옷이 없어도 낡은 셰익스피어 책을 가지고 다니고 글도 잘 쓰는 그가 스스로를 사랑할 수 없단 게 안타까웠다. 디키 같은 한량이 프린스턴을 나온 것, 철자도 틀려서 톰이 봐줘야 하는 정도의 작문 실력이 프린스턴 수준이란 것. 그게 더 거짓인 세상 아닌가? 디키에게 선택되어져야만 하는 삶. 끝까지 자신을 지우고 싶었던 톰. 자신의 글쓰는 재능을 서명위조로 이름 붙이는 톰. 그런 그를 존재 그 자체로 봐주는 피터가 나는 참 좋았고, 그래서 톰에게 죽어가는 피터의 마지막이 슬펐다. 그리고 톰이 자신을 이용하는 사람이 아니라, 진정 사랑해주는 이를 죽였다는 건 자신을 죽인 거나 마찬가지일 것이다.

All of the cast does a great job and their chemistry helps to sell this story. The production design and the wardrobes are also well done. The concept and execution is excellent and creative. The problem that this movie has is that the ending should have been more convincing. The finale purposefully breaks the format in an effort to be extra scary that kind of backfires. Still, the film's ability to invoke both its general setting and all the hallmarks of late night TV is genuinely impressive and its watchable. Just a piece of information for everyone who hasn't noticed yet that Millie Bobby Brown's character in the film started with "E". Is this a coincidence? The dragon is a plus, and how the film ended still gives me goosebumps. Burning the castle and turning the royal family into ashes is just a great way to get revenge on the enemy. Detroit Rock City (1999) - My Rating: D #MovieReviews This is a film that many of my friends like, and I think because they saw it when they were young that may be the reason they love it. If I saw this as a teen it may be a nostalgia trip for me, but watching it now… meh. I’m not a fan of Kiss, but thankfully the film is filled with great music from other bands. The comedy for the most part falls flat, only giving me handful of chuckles. The characters are very over the top, except for Natasha Lyonn, Sam Huntington, Melanie Lynskey, and a few other side characters. It’s no wonder they’re still acting to this day. By the way, what is Edward Furlong doing these days. I found myself going back and forth on his character. I don’t know, I can understand why some love this movie, but I just found it mediocre. I’ll stick with my Dazed and Confuseds, and Empire Records. One final thought. Isn’t it wild how Sam Huntington has made an entire career just playing the same character in seemingly every film he’s in? That’s not a dig at him either, I’m a fan. Challengers (2024) par Luca Guadagnino. 🎬🍿🎞️ Ma note : 3/5 Amour, Gloire et Tennis ! J’ai passé un bon moment devant Challengers ! Des films dans l’univers du Tennis, il y en a pas tant que ça. Le dernier qui me revient en tête c’est l’excellent biopic La Méthode Williams avec Will Smith (2021). D’où ma curiosité d’aller découvrir le film en salles. J’ai été émerveillé par la direction artistique du film notamment sur les matchs. Whaou, coup de chapeau ou plutôt coup de raquette pour le travail monstre effectué. Les caméras embarquées comme si nous étions les joueurs qui frappent dans la balle c’est une idée géniale. La façon de filmer les personnages est d’enchaîner et alterner entre des plans larges et d’autres très serrés pour mieux cerner les émotions d’un personnage est excellente. En gros, la caméra était la balle de tennis littéralement. Globalement, la reconstitution de ce qui fait un tournoi de tennis est là y compris les off(s) et autres tractations internes (négociation,contrat, News TV). Il y’a de la tension et il y a une très belle alchimie entre Tashi, Art et Patrick. Les acteurs sont bons. Ce n’est encore une fois pas ce film qui me fera dire que Zendaya est une grande actrice mais je l’ai trouvé convaincante. J’ai eu énormément de mal avec l’histoire. Trop puérile et peu crédible. Mitigé aussi sur la fin du film. Je m’attendais à tout sauf à cela et cette issue ne m’a pas transporté émotionnellement. Regrettable. Le travail sur le son est bon même si à la longue petite overdose d’un theme qui revient trop souvent à mon goût. En conclusion, sans être une tête de série, ce Challengers de Luca Guadagnino nous offre des séquences renversantes et transpirantes d’ingéniosité. Une réalisation sublime qui valide l’énorme coup droit gagnant du film.
