Have you ever hated your belly? Sucked it in? Wished it were a little bit flatter? Had not-so-pretty thoughts and feelings about postpartum or menopause bellies? Stuffed yourself into spanx? Instead of trying to change your belly, what about listening to its wisdom? One of the many ways soulcollage(R) offers a doorway into discovery is when you make a card of a part of your self that you hate... and discover the profound wisdom it has to share. Here’s an example from “The Muffin Top” soulcollage card. The Muffin Top I am the one who has a real belly. The wisdom I have to offer you is: You can spend a LOT of time, money, and energy hating me. A lifetime! But here’s the thing: I am NOT THE PROBLEM. I am a beautiful muffin; I am a glorious cupcake. There are so many images in the world that don’t look like me and that makes me feel unloved, disgusting, ashamed. Those images tell me all kinds of crazy: Be smaller! Be flatter! Do this to be loved! Be big and full of yourself, until age seven, and then be flat and hungry! But don’t have any hunger. Look thin! Don’t get angry! Hide your intuition. Be attractive by Not Being Yourself! Don’t get stretched. If you get stretched, get sucked and stitched back in. Ugh. Those messages exhaust me. Stop being mean to me! Please direct your hateful angry energy outward, to a culture that tries to make me small and flat. I am supposed to stick out. That’s my natural shape: big, round, sometimes flabby, hanging over the top of your jeans. My jobs are to: breathe, digest food, and provide your “gut instinct” and intuition. I need a lot of room to do those things! Fun fact: did you know 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut? That’s is where food goes after it leaves me. Good moods and gut instincts come from me (and my other, fabulous, intestine neighbors). How cool is that? OK, Just to reiterate: I DIGEST FOOD, which keeps you ALIVE. So. Stop being mean to me for looking like the top of a muffin, or a cupcake. I’m pretty amazing. I mean, seriously. What’s your Superpower? Pretty wise, your belly. Take a peak at how I ate while I was at ZINCON earlier this month!🫣 As an Emotional Eating & Compulsive Eating recovery coach who is also working on my own recovery, I know how challenging it can be to maintain healthy eating habits when you're away from home. On this recent trip: For the sake of performance, Some of the foods I usually say, No, to, I gave myself permission to have & forgave myself QUICKLY for times I completely let my guard down. I stuck to eating 3 meals per day & no snacking as much as I could. Don’t let anyone gaslight you by telling you that your “obsession“ with eating a certain way is disordered or unhealthy. I got called a zealot by a family member once. From a family member that was very overweight and couldn’t get her own self together. Somehow my commitment to eating only real food and food that doesn’t harm me really pissed her off. It was her own addiction talking and had nothing to do with me. A different family member thinks that not allowing children to eat garbage food on a regular basis will give them an eating disorder. If you feed your children, healthy food that makes you a good parent you’re not someone facilitating an eating disorder. In fact, I would argue, allowing your child to eat sugar on a daily basis, as if it was normal, is much more likely to lead to them being disordered with food. Disordered eating is real, and being conscious and intentional about your food choices is not it. You are not orthorexic because you eat and live well.
