PROUDLY PRESENTING ’WATER PAVILION ORDRUPGAARD’, A NEW PERMANENT INSTALLATION BY JEPPE HEIN ‘Water Pavilion Ordrupgaard', a new gathering-place for playful interaction with art, appeals intuitively to children and adults alike. From an oval-shaped base, walls of flowing water shoot high into the air, then rise and fall in rhythmic alternation. These water walls shift continually, creating ever-new, ever-changing spaces for visitors to enter. Smiles are inevitable, whether participants choose to move around the pavilion relatively dry-footed, or to dive straight into the water. Along the way, participants meet spontaneously across generations, much as cultural and linguistic barriers dissolve in the direct sensory encounter with art. This installation can be experienced twice daily, Tuesdays – Sundays at noon and 2 PM, with an additional round on Wednesdays at 4 PM. Each round lasts for 18 minutes. The installation has received generous financial support from Nordea-fonden. Jeppe Hein (b.1974) has made a name for himself internationally with participatory artworks that encourage the audience to playfully engage with art and to start a dialogue with each other. At the crossroads between art, architecture and technical inventions Hein creates works that are usually rooted in a simple pared-down idea, and often in one or more geometric shapes. The artistic expression thus harks back to the conceptual and minimalist art of the 1970s, but Hein’s works are intended for interaction and are meant to be experienced physically. Jeppe Hein is already represented at Ordrupgaard with two works: ‘1 Dimensional Mirror Mobile’, 2009 and ‘Semicircular Mirror Labyrinth II’, 2013. Interest in Eva Gonzalès has been growing in recent years, and rightfully so. The National Gallery in London just acquired an important painting by her and The National Gallery of Ireland will show an excellent selection of her works in June. In 2026, the Petit Palais in Paris will do a monographic show on her. BERTHE MORISOT ‘SOUP TUREEN AND APPLE’ This painting is the only still life in the current exhibition ‘Impressionism and Its Overlooked Women’ and an exquisite one it is. Here Morisot has chosen a motif that was close at hand, with items that are probably from her own home. In the work, she shows an interest in working with the reflections of light on various surfaces: a white soup tureen, an apple, a knife and a crystal sugar bowl placed on a glossy table top. The Japanese pattern on the soup dish reflects the great interest of the time in everything Japanese, and thereby marks “the modern”. WILHELM AND HENNY HANSEN’S ORDRUPGAARD In 1918, the insurance director and art collector Wilhelm Hansen, his wife Henny, and their adopted son Knud moved into their newly built manor house here in Ordrup Krat. They called their new home Ordrupgaard, and its design had been masterminded by the Danish architect Gotfred Tvede. Originally, Ordrupgaard doubled as a home and a gallery where the couple could exhibit their impressive collection of French and Danish art from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Right from the outset, the couple gave the general public access to the collections, and Henny would later bequeath their home, park and entire art collection to the Danish nation. The rooms have remained virtually unchanged since then, appearing much as they did in Wilhelm and Henny’s time. In a Danish context, it is quite unique for an affluent home like Ordrupgaard to be so well preserved. Besøg Botanisk Have og oplev foråret, mens du går på jagt efter de smukke skulpturer 🌞🕵️♀️ Denne skulptur har titlen Sandalbinderen, og forestiller en ung mand, der er ved at snøre sine sandaler op 🩴 Den er skabt af den berømte græske billedhugger Lysippos (ca. 390 – 315 f.kr.). Han var Alexander den Stores hofbilledhugger, og nogle kilder fortæller, at han var den eneste, der havde lov til at portrættere den legendariske konge i skulpturform 🤴 Lysippos var kendt for at fremstille figurer, som har et mindre hoved, end et rigtigt menneske ville have, uden at det ser unaturligt ud 🧑🎨 Måske har du ikke engang lagt mærke til det på billederne? 🔎 Der er uenighed om, om den unge mand skal forestille den græske gud Hermes, som var gudernes sendebud, eller om den skal være en hyldest til de unge, græske atleter 💌🏃🏽♂️ Hermes ses tit med vinger på sine sandaler og sin rejsehat, og han bærer tit en heroldstav, men skulpturen her har ingen af de kendetegn 🪽 I oldtidens Grækenland havde man stor respekt for atleterne, hvor man både så deres kroppe som skønhedsidealet, men også så op til den mentale styrke i at hellige sig træningen 👨🦱👀 Skulpturen er en romersk kopi af den originale græske skulptur. Skulpturerne i Botanisk Have blev doneret af brygger Carl Jacobsen, da han mente, at kunst og kultur skulle være frit tilgængeligt for alle 😍 🇬🇧 in comments.
RUNE BOSSE—BEHIND THE SURFACE The installation consists of vertical boards of mixed grains and flowers placed in a double circle. From the outside, the work appears as a large, living sculpture, while a passage leads into the installation’s interior. The work almost takes on the character of a scientific laboratory fashioned in a stunning visual idiom. In ‘Behind the Surface’, Bosse initiates organic processes that unfold over time. The artwork will change continually: grains and grasses will grow, bloom, and wither again, and visitors will be able to notice the influence of the sun and the passage of the year. PRESENTING MARIE BRACQUEMOND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE NORDIC In the self-portrait, we see the artist, Marie Bracquemond against a golden background. Her expression is serious, and her gaze inward-looking and thoughtful. The front-facing composition is reminiscent of the religious icons of the past, but her figure is distinctly modern. Two years previously she had married the artist Félix Bracquemond, and in the same year she gave birth to the couple’s only child, their son Pierre. UPCOMING EXHIBITION🌱 RUNE BOSSE—BEHIND THE SURFACE On April 6, Rune Bosse will take over the greenhouse in the Ordrupgaard Art Park with a site-specific living sculpture that will restore the building to its original function as a plant nursery—albeit in a new format. With a scientific and philosophically investigative approach, Bosse creates a field of grain that grows straight upward, rising monumentally in space. The installation invites visitors to enter into the structure. Surrounded by walls of grain reaching up toward the sky, viewers are confronted with roots that are normally hidden beneath the earth’s surface, but which are now exposed in their vulnerability. Throughout its exhibition period, running from April to November, ‘Behind the Surface’ will undergo continual change. Besøg haven og gå selv på jagt efter de smukke skulpturer og nyd forårets planter, der springer ud 🌱🌷 Skulpturerne her forestiller den græske gudinde Athena og satyren Marsyas. Den fortæller en af de mange myter om Athena, som var gudinden for blandt andet visdom, håndværk og kunst 👩🎨👩🎓👷♀️ Ifølge myten lavede hun den dobbeltfløjte, der ligger for hendes fødder. Da hun spillede på fløjten, lo muserne af hende, fordi hendes kinder udspilede sig. Hun var en forfængelig gudinde og smed derfor fløjten fra sig 🪈🧝♀️ Skulpturen viser det øjeblik, hvor Marsyas ser dette og nærmer sig for at samle fløjten op. Athena advarede ham mod at tage noget, som en gud har smidt fra sig, men han kunne ikke dy sig 🫣 Da han spillede på fløjten, synes han, det lød så smukt, at han udfordrede Apollon. Apollon var blandt andet musikkens og sangens gud, og det var derfor et klassisk tilfælde af hybris 🫅🎼 Med hybris følger ofte nemisis, og da den overmodige Marsyas tabte dysten mod Apollon, blev han som straf flået levende 😨 De to figurer er afstøbninger af to romerske kopier, som er baseret på de græske originaler af billedhuggeren Myron (480 – 440 f.Kr) 🇬🇷 De blev købt til Botanisk Have af Carl Jacobsen, da han ønskede at gøre kunst og kultur tilgængeligt for alle 🤩

THE FUNEN PAINTERS Peter Hansen, Fritz Syberg and Johannes Larsen. The founder of Ordrupgaard, Wilhelm Hansen, was a childhood friend of the Funen-based painter Peter Hansen, and through him he and his wife Henny got to know the other Funen Painters. These friendships prompted the couple to purchase works by the Funen Painters, focusing on the triad made up by Fritz Syberg, Johannes Larsen and childhood companion Peter Hansen. The Funen Painters all had their roots on Funen and did most of their painting on the island. While different in terms of style and methodology, they all looked to their immediate surroundings for subject matter. Critics described them as ‘the peasant painters’, intending the term to be derogatory. INSIDE THE EXHIBITION Senior curator, Dorthe Vangsgaard Nielsen in front of two paintings by Mary Cassatt of her sister Lydia. The red-haired woman in both paintings is Cassatt’s older sister, Lydia. In 1877 Lydia left the US to live with her sister in Paris. At this time, Lydia had been diagnosed with Bright’s disease, which two years later resulted in her early death at the age of 45. In an almost symbolic manner, the fading colours of nature in the picture to the right seem to reflect her fragile health. The painting was exhibited at the sixth Impressionist exhibition in 1881 and must undoubtedly have meant a great deal to Cassatt. BERTHE MORISOT AND HER DAUGHTER IN FRONT OF A WINDOW In this rare self-portrait, Berthe Morisot has portrayed herself as both a mother and an artist. She is sitting with a sketchbook in her lap, and her daughter standing by her side. Julie has been quickly sketched, as though she only posed for a very short time, but we can nonetheless sense their close bond. Julie is standing close to her mother, who leans in towards her, reciprocating their intimacy. Morisot painted the background with quick strokes, but used careful brushstrokes to reproduce her own facial expression. There is no final work that relates to the painting. It may be that she wished to preserve the freshness of this first painted impression. LE CORSAGE NOIR’ BY BERTHE MORISOT Only seldom did the female Impressionists have access to professional models. This is however, the case in this picture by Berthe Morisot. Here a professional model, Milly, is sitting in the artist’s home, wearing an evening dress, gloves and a shawl. Although Morisot has not painted her in a public place like the theatre, the picture still refers to Parisian city life, in that her clothes indicate that she is about to go out. The black bodice was Morisot’s own, which she wore in a series of portrait photographs from around 1875.
