A well made and excellently cast series that ends up being the exact same copaganda it is supposedly criticizing. Oh, and it's British, so, goes to show that law enforcement sucks everywhere. #criminalrecord is an engaging show mostly do to the talents of its leads, but quickly falls into the same traps that all police shows fall into, especially the ones trying to be better and discuss the ills of law enforcement. Instead of fully admitting the racism, bigotry, misogyny, etc. baked into the structural system, the show continues the tired old song of the problems being only a few bad actors/apples and what is needed are good people becoming police and being put in charge. Personally, I feel the producers heard about these "new forensic techniques detectives used" and figured audiences would eat it up. Well, we did. After all, CSI, and its many spin-off, came out shortly after and for a period of time, those shows topped the TV ratings, so there definitely was a hunger. Pluto TV and Max now has these shows and I'll turn them on from time to time just to reminisce on old times. But maybe one day the producers will revive them like Unsolved Mysteries on Netflix. Grizzly crime plus screwed up cops is a formula for fun and crazy TV. The Brits have been masters of this recipe for years (see Luther, Marcella, Broadchurch, et al.). Take one or more horrifying murders with strewn body parts, ritualistic symbolism, and a freaked out public. Add in one or more detectives (who are almost as wacko as the killer!) trying to solve an impossible case before said killer kills again (because they will) while f**cked up cop also is forced (or not) to reconcile their own sordid past of mean parents, dead parents, their own bad parenting with their own kids (it’s always about mom and dad!), or unsolved cases from their past that haunt and repress and overwhelm to the point of barely being able to hold down this last chance of a job before being kicked off the force for good. Mix them together and you have a murder mystery and psychological case study cocktail that might result in two to three seasons on a streamer, a few Emmy nods, and maybe a TV movie! Well, we have all that for you in this episode of What We Watch When We Drink as we check out the first episode of all four seasons of the anthology series True Detective which airs on HBO or Max or HBO Max or something along those lines. It makes for tense, entertaining television, even if it isn't wholly accurate and creates an unrealistic expectation. News flash: not all crime is solved so quickly. This is called, "the CSI effect." You've most likely have heard the term by now, but just in case you haven't, it essentially means these programs are designed to fit within a certain time frame (usually 30 minutes to 1 hour, with commercials). 🆀🆄🅸🅲🅺 🆁🅴🆅🅸🅴🆆 📺 The New Detectives feels almost like a spiritual successor to Forensic Files, even though it was developed and ran at the same time. It retains the same format and focuses on the same type of content, yet the two were wholy unique shows (Forensic Files was originally conceived as a medical show then reengineered to be a forensic specific show). My only question is, who's going to complain about too much of a good thing? In high school and college, I would have these shows playing in the background while I studied.
