New coral nursery is up in @barefoot_kuata 😍 ! Put into place by the @drawaqa_trust and the team of marine biologists/divers here. A school of barracuda came in during the set up and it was magical. Once again nature never cease to amaze. 🌊 Some hotel guests could also joined in to put their coral fragments in the ropes ☺️ In 1 year we will have beautiful colonies to put in the reef and help increase the coral genetic diversity of Kuata reef. Natural Recruitment, what it is? And why do we care about it? For the most part hard corals start their lives as gametes drifting with the currents. They begin to develop into larvae as they drift, these larvae have limited mobility but mobility non the less. At this point they begin actively looking for a place to settle down, attach and begin building their beautiful calcium carbonate skeletal structures that make our reefs. This process is called natural recruitment, in other words the coral naturally develops in a location. This is opposed to active coral restoration where already present fragments are found and attached to structures. For natural recruitment to occur, stable substrate is key. With rapid decline of our reefs stable substrate can be harder and harder to find. Here we see two examples of artificial reefs that provide that stable substrate. The first is a structure we placed in our house bay, Chalok, a couple of years ago, and we are finally seeing natural recruitment on it! Very exciting. The second example is the HTMS Sattakut wreck. Wrecks if done properly provide a great and very stable space for natural recruitment to occur. #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Shivas Eye or Cats Eye This small disc commonly used in jewellery making is the operculum of a group of sea snails called Turban Snails. These snails are herbivores and graze across the substrate scraping off algae with their radula’s. But the snail itself is often overlooked due to its boring appearance; the operculum however is anything but. The operculum itself is like a trap door and is attached to the foot of the sea snail. It is flat on one side and hemispherical on the other making it difficult for predators to gain access to the snail beneath once the body is retracted and the operculum closes over the opening of the shell itself. The colour and vibrancy make the operculum a sought-after item as it is transformed into a necklace, bracelet, or ring. #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Its time for another Meet the intern post!! We would like to introduce Mats from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, who joined us last month. Why are you here? I’m a Coastal & Marine management student and for my internship I’m participating in the conservation program. Favourite Marine Animal? I think it will be the Killer Whale or the Manta Ray because of their majestic presence in the water and their intelligence. Favourite Conservation Dive so far? That would be the EMP fish and invertebrates survey. I just like to see all the different kind of marine animals because they are really interesting in how they look and the different behavior. What project will you be/are you thinking to work on whilst here? I will be helping with the EMP surveys. What do you think of Koh Tao? It’s my second time here on Koh Tao and It’s even better than the first time. This time I’m here longer and the nature is beautiful, the locals are so friendly and it’s just one big ‘working’ paradise. Any words of wisdom for want to be conservationists out there? Treat the world the same way you want to be treated and the world would be a better place for everyone. #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

We would like to introduce another one of our interns who joined us last month: Hi! My name is Nina de Jong, I’m a Coastal and Marine management student from the Netherlands. I’m here for a 10 week internship. I chose to do my internship at new heaven to broaden my knowledge about marine conservation and to see more of our beautiful oceans overall.🤓 My favourite marine animal has to be the whale shark. Beside these insanely special and big animals I also really love sea turtles and sea horses. I just can’t pick only one.😆 My favourite conservation dive so far is the fish EMP survey. It’s just a really relaxed dive looking at all those fish.🐠 I’m still figuring it out but I am thinking about working on the artificial reefs or monitoring the crown of thorns and cushion stars on the transect lines and comparing my new data with previous taken data. I really enjoy the life on Koh Tao. It’s touristic but there is still a really relaxed vibe here. I just love the island life.😊 My advice for future conservationists; If you’re thinking of becoming a conservationist, just go for it! We need to take care of our oceans but we can’t do it alone. You’ll learn about so many more ways on how to look after the under water world than you could think of.🌊 #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Have you every heard of an epitonid snail? The snail in the photo belongs to the Epidendrium genus, it is an ectoparasitic gastropod that is known to feed on the tissue of Tubastrea corals. Not only do they feed on the corals but they also use their structure to secure their eggs once spawned and the unmistakable bundles of yellow eggs can be seen strung amongst the Dendrophyllidae corals. They are commonly found around Koh Tao but often over looked due to their small size. #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Camouflage- hide or disguise the presence of (a person, animal, or object) by means of camouflage or the art of blending in has been around for years. It is seen in nature and utilized on land by hunters and the military. Under the sea you can find some of the true masters of this art. Cephalopods are one such class and are well documented to use a series of cell within their skin to change not only their color but also their texture to blend in with their surroundings. Another group of animals you may not have noticed are some of the sea slugs that feed upon the coral. Phestilla sp. Are incredibly cryptic as they blend seamlessly into the coral upon which they live and feed. Weird wonderful and difficult to spot! #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Mimicry or the close external resemblance of an animal or plant (or part of one) to another animal, plant, or inanimate object is something we can often observe throughout nature. From the Giant swallowtail moth that mimics bird droppings to the mimic octopus which alters its shape to resemble a lionfish, a flat fish, or a sea snake. Mimicry is everywhere and is used to prevent predation or entice prey. Here on Koh Tao we can find different examples but one of the coolest one we think is as seen above. Here we have a varicose wart slug and a juvenile marbled sea cucumber. The sea cucumber mimics the coloration and pattern of the wart slug to avoid predation. Although not a common observation it is easy to see how well this adaptation by the sea cucumber works. #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Hii, my name is Lise Goedbloed. I'm from a small Village in the Netherlands and am currently studying coastal and marine management. I am here on Koh Tao to do a 10 week internship program, during which I am able to learn a lot about marine conservation. Which is the field of work I am hoping to enter after I finish studying. My favourite marine animals are the whale shark and boxfish. The whale shark is so mesmerizing, and the boxfish is just really cute :) My favourite dives so far have been the coral safari's. It is really fun to be able to recognize different corals more and more. I am thinking of contributing to the artificial Reef project, so I can learn more about coral restoration. Koh tao is the most beautiful place I have been to so far; I love the tropical nature and the chill island life. And lastly my advice for future conservationists: just go out there and take every opportunity you can to make the world a better place! #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Xestospongia testudinaria or the Giant Barrel Sponge is found commonly throughout the Indo Pacific. This large sponge grows up to 2.4m length and are some of the longest living marine species. Their ability to filter water makes them true power houses of the ocean as they pull water in through their porous tissue, filtering out the organic matter before the now nutrient free water is pumped back into the ecosystem. It is estimated that they can filter thousands of litres of sea water daily making their presence on the reef one of extreme importance. Not only that but you can find an array of different organisms living on the tissue as well as inside their chimneys. #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Its time for another meet the intern post, today we are introducing Isa van der Aar, who joined us just last month: Where are you from: I'm from Ter Aar, the Netherlands Why am I here: I am here, in Koh Tao, to participate in a 10 week internship program. I chose this internship to learn more about marine conservation, but also to gain more experience in my potential future work field. Favourite marine animal: whalesharks! But in the time that I've been here, I have learned that I also really love juvenile Harlequin sweetlips. Favourite conservation dive so far: I love doing invert EMP surveys. All the inverts are really cute and you really need to concentrate to be able to spot them. What project am I thinking to work on whilst here: I am not sure yet, but I find artificial reefs really interesting. So maybe I'll be able to do something with that. What do I think of Koh Tao: It is the most beautiful place I have ever been! The nature (especially the coral reefs) are amazing and the people are all really kind. Some words of wisdom for future conservationists: try to be the best version of yourself and to help your surroundings as much as you can! #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Hii, I am Aramis Bronneberg. I am half Dutch and half Italian, but currently live in the Netherlands. I study Coastal and Marine Management and came to Koh Tao to do a 10 week internship at New Heaven. My favourite marine animal is a whale & whale shark, I can’t take my eyes off them! My favourite conservation dive was the fish EMP survey, because they’re so satisfying to watch. I hope I can contribute to a project where I can help restore the reef and monitor it’s surroundings. I just arrived, but I’m already in love with this island. I have never seen so many beautiful corals and fish 🐠🪸. Meet our new intern! We are happy to welcome Ninka Slebioda Where are you from? I am from the Netherlands Why are you here? Four years ago I learned diving in Indonesia and I experienced the underwater world for the first time. I found it so beautiful and fascinating, but I also saw the human impact on the reefs, such as coral bleaching and plastic pollution. It was painful seeing this and that has driven me to commit myself to be part of making a change and give something back to the ocean. Favourite Marine Animal? Octopus Favourite Conservation Dive so far? When we were doing EMP for the invertebrates and fish. What project will you be/are you thinking to work on whilst here? — I don’t know the answer to this question yet, but I hope to contribute to data collection of an already existing project — What do you think of Koh Tao? Even thought Koh Tao is very touristic, it still has a relaxed atmosphere. You can find nice beaches and good food for sure! Any words of wisdom for want to be conservationists out there? Triggerfish here are notorious for their aggressive behavior during mating and nesting seasons with most divers having a tale or two to tell about their run ins with triggerfish. Whilst these interactions make it a well known species, what most people don’t know is the feeding habitats of these animals. Above we can see what is commonly referred to as a trigger fish feeding pit, the shells of gastropods and bivalves litter the floor as evidence of the love these Triggers have for these molluscs. Two of the more common species we have seen Trigger feeding on are Tridacna sp (Both Giant & Boring clams) as well as Turban Snails. Now most people haven’t heard of a Turban Snail but have likely seen its operculum or what is commonly referred to as a Cat’s eye. This herbivorous sea snail is a favourite of the triggers, so next time you come across a feeding pit, see if you can tell what it has been #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

July was a great month for us at New Heaven Reef Conservation Project. We got to name 3 new turtles! Two of them were green turtles and one was a hawksbill. We found them in Chalok Bay, Shark Bay, and Light House Bay. Their names are Niran, Halley and Draco. And we are happy to welcome them to Koh Tao! We hope to see these turtles around in the future, be sure to look out for them on your next dive or snorkel. Sea turtles have unique markings on either side of their face, these markings are called facial scutes. Like humans have a fingerprint we can use the pattern of these facial scutes to identify different individuals, that’s how we know they are new to the area! Thanks Koh Tao Turtles for helping us identify these endangered species! Many have heard of the cleaner wrasse, a small blue and black wrasse you find all over the reef. You may have even found one trying to clean you as you swim by. Cleaner wrasse are however not the only cleaners out there on the reef. Doryrhamphus janssi, or Janss’ pipefish is also a cleaner. This little pipefish which can reach a length of up to 14cm and is part of the Syngnathidae family along with sea horses. They generally work in pairs to clean small fish like damsels and cardinalfish and can often be seen swimming upside down (silly pipefish). When mating season rolls around it is the male who will carry the eggs, giving birth to live young, just like sea horses. Janss’ pipefish can be found throughout the central Indo-Pacific region manning their cleaning stations tucked away under rocky or coral shelves safe from lurking predators. #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Can you spot the fish?! It’s blended in, but this is a scorpion fish, part of the Scorpaenidae family. They are carnivorous and generally hang out on the bottom, like this one, ready to ambush their prey. There are about 350 different species of fish in the Scorpaenidae family, lionfish being some of the most infamous and stone fish being some of the most venomous. Their venom is in their spines, and cause painful injuries to humans, that are fatal to fish. The biggest fish in the Scorpaenidae can grow to over a meter! Introducing the cushion star, or Culcita novaeguineae originally discovered in New Guinea they come in all sorts of colors and are found throughout the Indo-Pacific. Aptly named for their pillow like appearance. As Juveniles they are much more star shaped, however as they grow, their bodies plump up and their arms get shorter relative to their bodies. Like all sea stars they move around using tube feet. Cushion stars like the infamous crown of thorns eat coral, however unlike the crown of thorns they don’t only eat coral, they will also eat small invertebrates and decaying organic matter known as detritus. They eat the same way as other sea stars by inverting their stomachs through their mouth digesting their food externally and then sucking their stomachs back in full of nutrients. #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Damsel fish! What’s up with these feisty little fish? First, they may be the most common fish we have around Koh Tao, they are relatively small and everywhere. There are about 400 different species of damsel fish including clown fish (yes clown fish are damsels too) inhabiting mostly tropical waters around the world. The oldest ever recorded fossil of a damsel fish came from the Paleocene era that’s around 60 million years ago!! Have you ever noticed some of them can be rather feisty though? Do you know why this is? Certain damsel fish, like the Jewel damsel in the photos are gardeners. Yup, they cultivate their own little garden to feed themselves, they are very picky about their algae that they grow, and they are very defensive of their gardens. If you get too close, they will even bark at you!! Silly little damsel. One more cool fact is that some damsels have even been observed to ‘domesticate’ shrimp, the shrimp find safety under the watchful guard of the damsel fish while they hang out and fertilize the crop. #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

What is that? Is it coral? Is it algae? NOPE it’s a sponge!! To be specific it is Pseudoceratina purpurea which is a type of boring sponge. This is not boring in terms of yawn boring no I mean it literally bores its way into coral. The sponge creates tunnels through the coral’s skeleton, not to eat, but to use as protection. These tunnels weaken the structural integrity of a coral colony often causing it to collapse or fall over. While these sponges are bad news for coral, scientist have found a chemical in P. purpurea that has shown to be useful in inhibiting cancer cell growth and production in humans. You never know what you’ll find on the reef!! #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Here in Chalok bay every once and while the tide goes out, and I mean way out. All that rocky looking stuff you see out in the distance isn’t rock, its coral! You might think that such an extreme exposure would put all this coral under stress causing bleaching or even mortality, but this coral isn’t just any coral. The coral you see is part of the Porites genus. Porites is a very common genus all over Koh Tao as well the rest of the world. You have probably seen it while diving or snorkeling littered with the pretty tops of Christmas tree worms. What you maybe didn’t know is that Porites is extremely resilient, like many boulder style corals it has a higher concentration of the symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae allowing it to withstand this kind of harsh exposure. Much respect Porites, thanks for protecting our beach from all those waves!! #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Wow what a cool looking fish! Lionfish are demersal bony-fish that range from the South Pacific all the way to the Red Sea. They are a predatory fish and are an important part of reef ecosystems, but in recent years their population numbers have boomed. Lionfish are native to the Indo-Pacific, but not the Atlantic Ocean where a single lionfish can reduce native fish recruitment by around 80%! In Thailand, 9 native lionfish species can be found on the reefs and range in size and color, while in the Caribbean there are 2 species. Fun facts: 🐟Efforts to create a lionfish food market are happening worldwide as they are a delicious fish! 🐟Lionfish stomachs can expand 30 times their natural size! 🐟 Lionfish have very few predators #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Pseudosiderastrea tayamai is one of the least common species of corals we have here around Koh Tao. It is usually only found in small colonies in shallower reefs. You may spot it if you go to Lighthouse, Shark Island, Hin Wong Bay or Pottery. It is a beautiful boulder style coral with large polygonal corallites surrounded by a distinct white wall. One of my favorite features of this coral are the distinctive septa that form a radial pattern almost like a star. Be sure to look out for it the next time you’re diving or snorkeling around Koh Tao! #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

The blue ring octopus, elusive yet infamous! There are four species all belonging to the genus Hapalochlaena. They are all highly venomous despite not being bigger than a golf ball. In fact they are thought to be one of the most venomous creatures on the planet. The toxin they carry is called tetrodotoxin. It is a neurotoxin, meaning it attacks the central nervous system affecting motor control and eventually breathing. Tetrodotoxin doesn’t actually come from the octopus itself, it comes from a symbiotic bacteria than can also be found in the gut of pufferfish. For the blue ringed octopus, the bacteria exists in the octopus’s saliva making their bite deadly. Don’t worry though deaths from blue ring octopus are very rare, and easy to avoid! Just don’t touch them! #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Hippocampus trimaculatus, also known as the three-spot seahorse is in the Syngnathidae family. Found here around Koh Tao, as well as the rest of the Indo and West Pacific, preferring shallow seas. It generally inhabits areas with sandy or rocky bottoms close to coral reefs and can be found at depths up to 100m. It feeds on plankton and other small crustaceans anchoring itself with its tail while it feeds. Like all seahorses the male carries the eggs for about 11 to 20 days in a specialized pouch, until he is ready to give birth to live young. These seahorses are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list, as they face habitat destruction as well as being used in Chinese medicines. Be sure to look for these guys next time your on a muck dive and report your sighting to iSeahorse! #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility #projectseahorse

Seeing a turtle returning to the wild in its natural habitat is always a moment of great emotion. Experiencing it in the setting of what we could define as one of the most beautiful diving sites on Koh Tao, Aow Leuk, is even more impressive. A magical moment that we experienced on Monday morning together with the children of the Baan Koh Tao School. Sirius, Fish and Lucky were the three young green sea turtles released. We were all in a circle, our eyes fixed on our turtles as they were about to dive back into the sea. The silence was palpable in front of such a unique moment. Good lucky Sirius, Fish and Lucky! Or as we want to call them Siriusly Lucky Fish! Did you know there are about 20 different species of barracuda, found all over the world in warm and tropical regions? Koh Tao has 3 main species, the smallest of which is also the smallest species, that is the yellowtail barracuda averaging about 30 to 40cm. If you ever make it out to Chumpon or Southwest pinnacles you may see huge schools of more than 100 of them hanging out in the water column. The next largest species we have around Koh Tao is the chevron barracuda, distinguished by the chevron shaped stripes down the side of its body. Koh Tao is also home to the largest species of barracuda, commonly knowns as a great barracuda. Great barracudas like the one in this photo can grow up to 1.5m and are very are formidable predators, with very few predators themselves. Great Barracudas are also known to be some of the fastest swimmers reaching speeds of up to 58 kilometers per hour! #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Time for another meet the intern post! Today we would like to Introduce Amanda who joined us just last week. Hi! My name is Amanda and I’m originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! I’m in Koh Tao to learn about mineral accretion reef restoration because it’s not widely used in the states. My favorite marine animal are octopus, they’re so independent & inquisitive! My favorite conservation dive so far has been substrate surveying because I get to stare at coral 🤓 While here I intend to photograph and measure acropora growth on New Heaven’s mineral accreting reefs and then compare that data to acropora growth on coral nurseries in the states. I’m falling in love with Koh Tao..I’m starting to think about staying! Words of ✨wisdom✨ for getting into conservation? Today’s coral feature introduces Pavona cactus. One of the few corals with a name that is easy to say! Its more common names are leaf coral or even potato chip coral. It is a hard coral which grows in vertical leaf like structures never more than a few millimeters thick. This coral is one of many unique corals which are referred to as bifacial meaning the polyps with their photosynthesizing zooxanthellae sit on either side of the frond like structures to maximize light capability, rather than just facing one side of the colonies structure upward like most corals do. It is native to the Indo Pacific and prefers calmer shallower waters of lagoons, and reefs, usually no more than 30meteres in depth. While this beautifully delicate coral is very common throughout the area, it is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List as its threatened by climate change and coastal development. #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility

Have you ever looked closely into the dense branches of some hard corals and noticed little crabs? They are all over the place around Koh Tao. There are two genres of crabs that inhabit corals in both the Pocilloporidae and Acroporidae families. They are called Trapezia and Tetralia, both belonging to the Xanthidae family, and are commonly known as coral crabs. There are many different species found all over the world always inhabiting the same types of corals. They can be found in pairs or solitary and they feed on the rich mucus provided to them by their coral hosts without bringing any harm. In return they fiercely defend their homes from all sorts of other animals. The most impressive of which is the crown of thorns. Crown of thorns are what we call corallivores, feeding only on coral able to decimate entire colonies relatively quickly. Coral crabs aren’t more than a few centimeters across and yet they will pinch at the tube feet of the much larger crown of thorns successfully defending their coral hosts. Such a cool symbiotic relationship! #coraltaxonomy #coralgenus #internship #marineconservation #coralreefs #endangeredspecies #emp #sharkmonitoring #coraltransplant #hardcoral #protectedspecies #marinelife #nhrcp #protectwhatyoulove #protectouroceans #scubalife #girlsthatscuba #volunteering #volunteerabroad #conservationdiverofficial #newheavendiveschool #womeninoceanscience #womeninscience #kohtao #thailand #ecologicalmonitoringprogram #marineconservation #ourblueplanet #ouroceanourresponsibility
