Communication 🤝 technology! Did you know that many people use assistive technology to help them communicate with others? There are so many options to fit any age or ability level. We’ve incorporated augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) using a variety of devices through the years. People who’ve experienced strokes, traumatic brain injuries, ALS, MD, and more may benefit from this technology. This is a @tobii_dynavox eye gaze system. Our patient only has to use his eyes to select his preferred word or phrase. We love a holistic, team approach to care at CPTW, but it’s especially important when navigating a progressive neurological disorder. Here’s a few ways a team approach can help! •Movement Disorders Neurologist: specializes in Parkinson’s disease and other movement-based neurological disorders. This provider has a wealth of knowledge about the diagnosis and treatment options, and is such a valuable resource. We love collaborating with the providers at @choosesjc and @aug_university ! •Speech language pathologist (SLP): speech, voice, and swallowing changes are very common as PD progresses (and are sometimes the first symptoms). An SLP who has received training and education working with this disorder can help navigate these changes and improve outcomes. Our SLPs are all trained to provide LSVT LOUD. •Physical therapist: this team member targets mobility and balance. They customize exercises to meet the patients needs and can decrease incidences of freezing and falls associated with PD progression. Our physical therapists are also trained to provide LSVT BIG! •Occupational therapy: appropriateness of assistive devices for ADLs, fine motor changes, and upper body strength are targeted by OTs. Their goal is to keep you independent as long as possible! Registered dietician/nutritionist: these professionals have so much knowledge of how different foods impact our bodies. They can help with any unexpected weight loss and developing a personalized optimal nutrition plan for the patient. Each patient’s care team may look a little different. Not everyone needs every single team member at all times (except the movement disorders neurologist..they’re important ALL of the time). Always remember to ask your providers about their experience level with Parkinson’s Disease to ensure you’re receiving the highest level of care.
