This week the Planning Awards 2024 shortlist was announced and 3 Mills Studios is up for the 'Best Use of Heritage in Placemaking' award. The 3 Mills project encompasses the adaptive and creative reuse of three key buildings: the Gin Still, the Grade II listed Custom House and the Rush House. Our retrofit work of Goldfinger’s iconic Balfron Tower in East London (developed by @telfordhomes), made the short-list for this year’s ‘Creative Retrofit’ Awards for the Festival of Pineapples. Last week we enjoyed presenting the ‘Second Life’ story of Balfron Tower to the Pineapple Judges. Now all there is to do is wait for the ceremony on the 16th May… 🎸BEFORE & AFTER – Communal Rooms The communal rooms in the former utility tower, realising Goldfinger’s partially unbuilt vision, now offer a space for residents to socialise with neighbours outside of their private dwellings – these include a cinema, yoga space, music room, dining and kitchen space, gym, library and a private roof terrace. 🛝 BEFORE & AFTER – Playground The playground, which had been unsafe, anti-social and closed in, is now transformed into a modern, state of the art play space, with new slides, climbing walls and a rubberised floor finish to soften its use and appearance. #pineappleawards #creativeretrofit #secondlives @thedeveloper

Now all there is to do is wait for the ceremony on the 16th May… 🥂 🌿 BEFORE + AFTER – Gardens The new landscape expands to improve the rest of the Brownfield Estate, providing a range of environments each characterised by subtly different botanical curiosities helping to distinguish between public and private space. 🏡 BEFORE & AFTER – Homes Internal partition walls in the majority of flats have been re-planned to suit the way we live now, and they have been brought fully up to date. The shortlist for The Pineapples 2024 — awards that recognise excellence in development, design and delivery of placemaking — has been announced, and three of Grimshaw’s projects are in the running for a golden pineapple for their contribution to place. Newport Station Bridge, a unique and vital pedestrian and cycle bridge promoting active travel; Golden Valley Masterplan, a pioneering vision for west Cheltenham as UK’s largest cybersecurity innovation district; and Bath Schools of Art and Design, a repurposing of the Farrell/Grimshaw — designed factory for Herman Miller, will be presented in live judging in April. #PineapplesAwards #FuturePlace #Infrastructure #CreativeRetrofit

UP NEXT: Crusader Works, Manchester – @capitalcentric with @shedkm is presenting next to compete for the golden pineapple for #CreativeRetrofit Originally built in the late 1840s, Crusader was one of the earliest and largest purpose-built textile machinery works in Manchester. Retrofitted for a residential community, the project aimed to preserve historical features where possible and minimise interventions to the existing fabric, restoring the courtyard enclosure and masonry façade.

Up next in #CreativeRetrofit @bowarts, Lakeside Centre, Bexley – @peabodyldn with Bow Arts, Sails & Sons and Architecture The Lakeside Centre saw initial success as a community hub in the late 1990s but quickly fell into disrepair and was closed by the early-2000s. This retrofit creates 40 artists studios, a nursery, cafe, community kitchen and gardens. Refurbishment of the iconic sports court The Cage alongside and other immediate spaces seek to upgrade health, wellbeing and the arts in Thamesmead. The project provides creative workspace for 200 people and has a focus on lightness throughout, to connect each space in the two-storey building across its 60m length. Presenting next in the #CreativeRetrofit category is @dugdaleartscentre, Enfield – @enfieldcouncil with @dallas_pierce_quintero Born out of meanwhile activation spaces due to the pandemic and the Build-the-Change initiative, the retrofit for The Dugdale Arts Centre is designed to be adaptable and welcoming. Home to the Museum of Enfield, the Black Box theatre and a new cafe, the space is culturally valuable and inclusive, with work spaces and a number of clubs running activities

We are thrilled to announce that our new London Studio, 75 Wallis Road has been shortlisted for Pineapples Award 2023 in the Creative Retrofit category. Wallis Road is right in the heart of Hackney Wick, East London’s most fascinating and culturally diverse neighbourhoods. The brief was to create a permanent home for our practice, HTA Design, and secure the future of one of the more distinctive 19th century buildings in the district. Our warehouse was built in 1868 and is identified as ‘the Heritage Building’ within the Hackney Wick masterplan. It has been used as a place of invention, manufacture, and storage for over 150 years. Our intervention provides new purpose to the building, fully safeguarding its future, and providing inspiration for increasing the reuse of our nation’s industrial buildings. The building renovation has been considered to improve every aspect of the modern workplace, and enhance the general wellbeing of workers and visitors. It will offer benefits to local community groups and residents, as a place of professional events and social activities.
