I'm in a daze. Watching my students as they work quietly thinking, "I can't believe I've been teaching for 11 years." I really didn't like children at all. My thoughts were, "Go back to school after graduating high school is insane." Now here I am with three degrees in English in various areas at different levels. The UK is extremely book focused so there normally isn’t much room for fun activities! 🥺 However, since it’s the last few days before Easter Holiday, I was able to add a little creativity to the class I’m supplying in all week! With no access to a printer, I scrambled together these two games. The first one was an egg hunt to find numbers and signs to make as many math sentences as you could. The winning team got to pick the songs for our party later in the afternoon. I told all the students they won because they learned, worked as a team and had fun. (Typical day in Canada) 🇨🇦🙃 Afterwards we played pin the tail on the bunny! CLEARLY, not a good bunny but it was a great opportunity to show them that not everyone can excel at everything. To which a student said, “it’s okay you tried your best. You’re still the best singer in the whole world” 🥺😂❤️ I showed them my first attempt and we all agreed that with anything that seems impossible, if you keep trying you’ll slowly get better! 🐥 Arrays with Y2 🐰 Last night’s skip dive into the packaging bin in Aldi was worthwhile for today’s lesson - even more so buying the little Easter themed chocolates for the children to put in and see the arrays more clearly 🤗 I had them stand tall with arms raised to be a column then lie flat on the floor to be a row in a game. They each found Black History Legends to Study, Report, and Dress Up to Present as a Live Statue. Guess who won the Most Creative Door for Black History Month? 🫣 When my students started clapping, I was about to tell them to be quiet. "Miss, YOU WON!" Yall know how I try and stay low key. My name was in the school announcements. One of the judges said it fit my personality. Directors are usually behind the camera. I like to stay in my classroom out of the way. The white paper with the black reel came to mind because movies started in black and white. The lowercase letter c means the more I try to hide amongst everyone, the more I stand out! Studying their environment and community, First Grade...built a town?! They call it Dogwood Town, and it features roads, buildings, trees, signs, a CVS, and other essential services, people, and even pets. Considering the question "What creates impact?" students first brainstormed what a community might need, then created a beautiful map of their town. Next, they met with woodshop teacher Chris to discuss building and math teacher Liz to measure and cut paper for a floor plan and road structure. An active town grew from blocks, paper artwork, and collaboration. For most school kids, everything they make or write in class is a first and final draft. The idea of working through multiple drafts is unfamiliar. So, it's massively intimidating to make your first mark or write your first sentence when it feels like the only chance you’ll get. I regularly see students freeze at this point. A first draft, described here by writer @austinkleon , is something that just needs to exist. We need to get it on to the page - then we can improve it. This idea would be a game changer for so many learners. A drafting and redrafting process is what happens in the grown-up working world, the world we want to prepare young people for. It can be hard to squeeze a multiple-drafts-and-feedback process into our fast-paced sequences of work. But we need to make it happen. Too often, I can see the real learning start - when learners get feedback on a first draft - and then abruptly stop again when we have to move on to the next area of study. A way to start: show the EL video of Austin’s Butterfly with students (another Austin, this time, nit Kleon!) Link in bio. It features the wonderful educator Ron Berger sharing a scientific drawing of a Swallowtail butterfly by first grader Austin, which has been improved through six drafts. There's a first time for everything! This year, I'm decorating my door for Black History Month! It doesn't help that I'm overthinking it. Lol! SET AND DIRECT! Before a movie is shot, it takes a lot to secure the set. Once the SET is secured, then the directors can DIRECT! I have a movie reel cut-out to create a border around the door. I'm going to put the movie titles next to the directors. Hopefully, the kids will catch on. They might not know who Spike is, though. Last but not least, my shirt. I actually ordered it in brown. *deep breath* If it works, I will post it! My first idea FAILED! I'm not giving up, though! I don't see how elementary teachers do this all the time!
