After Gustav Mahler realized that Beethoven, Schubert, and several other composers died during or after writing their 9th Symphony, the belief that a composer’s 9th Symphony is destined to be their last started to spread. Having written many symphonies himself, Mahler was extremely wary of this and tried to cheat his way around the curse. He refused to name his supposed-to-be-ninth symphony by the number, and instead called it as “The Song of the Earth”. And his plan seemed to work, all is well even after completing his 10th Symphony (called the 9th). But ironically, not for long—he passed away while working on his next symphony. Like many other superstitions, the myth has later been proven to be untrue—but it still was a fascinating phenomenon, especially during those times. Enjoy reading musical facts? Adagio from Mahler 9 on the reed organ! Fun Fact, when this organ was built, Mahler was in his 20s. His ninth symphony, the last he completed, means so much to me - here is Schoenberg about it: "The Ninth is most strange. In it, the author hardly speaks as an individual any longer. It almost seems as though this work must have a concealed author who used Mahler merely as his spokesman, as his mouthpiece." Still working on the organ - will need to tune it, and you can also hear some extraneous rattling, which I I think will be cleared up by replacing some felt that keeps metal components from vibrating against the wood. I only want to take it apart so many times, so I am continuing to play for a while and catalog problems that I can then solve in one go. Tutti conoscono la maledizione del Club dei 27 o la leggenda che Paul McCartney sia morto ma pochi sanno però che già a cavallo del 1800 la musica ha contribuito a creare storie e superstizioni affascinanti, una su tutte: la Maledizione della Nona, secondo la quale molti compositori romantici e post-romantici sono passati a miglior vita dopo aver musicato la loro Nona sinfonia. Fu #beethoven a dare vita a quello che oggi chiameremmo “Club della Nona”. Il famoso pianista, ormai del tutto sordo, compose il suo ultimo e più grande capolavoro, la Nona sinfonia per eccellenza, quella contenente sul finale il tentativo riuscito di musicare e dare un suono alla poesia di Schiller “Inno alla gioia”. Due soli anni dopo e prima ancora di iniziare a scrivere altro morì. La storia della Maledizione iniziò a diffondersi tra i musicisti dell’epoca in seguito alla morte di #Mahler, compositore austriaco che – superstizioso com’era – si convinse di aver trovato un modo per raggirare il fato. Arrivato ormai alla composizione della Nona sinfonia e conoscendo la sorte che era toccata a qualcuno dei suoi colleghi, cercò un escamotage: stravolse le regole della composizione e la intitolò “Il canto della Terra”. Convinto di essere sfuggito alla superstizione, iniziò qualche anno più tardi a comporre la Decima sinfonia, che rimase incompleta… A raggiungere questo “limite” furono altri musicisti, morti come sempre dopo aver composto la Nona o addirittura prima ancora di averla finita: #schubert , scomparso a soli 31 anni ; Antonín #dvorak , la cui Nona sinfonia è stata utilizzata come sottofondo al primo allunaggio, e molti altri, che vengono presi d’esempio per alimentare la leggenda della Nona.
