Há 21 anos, Opeth lançava "Damnation", seu sétimo álbum de estúdio. Gravado nas mesmas sessões do anterior, "Deliverance" (2002), é um marco na discografia da banda por representar uma ruptura estética em relação ao som de seus álbuns anteriores, saindo da influência metal, tonitruante e intensamente pesada para um estilo pastoral, sinfônico e mais contemplativo. O projeto, que foi originalmente concebido como dois discos sonoramente distintos por Mikael Åkerfeldt, líder criativo, vocalista e guitarrista do Opeth, teve como influência a perda de sua avó, que faleceu enquanto os álbuns eram criados e gravados. A dor da ida e o luto são expurgados de formas interessantíssimas. Enquanto "Deliverance" era um grito de angústia raivoso e de negação, "Damnation" é o lamento, a dor lancinante e chorosa após cair a ficha do que acontecera. Devido ao cenário, podemos dizer que o álbum é um dos mais melancólicos da discografia da banda. Passagens orquestrais no mellotron — instrumento no qual o Opeth passou a adotar a partir daqui —, vocais limpos mais harmoniosos e melodias densas mas sem tantas amálgamas de riffs, tempos e timbres "tortos" estão em toda a parte no disco, o que o diferenciou na época dos outros trabalhos do conjunto, que alcançou uma massa latente de fãs com "Still Life" (1999) e, sobretudo, "Blackwater Park" (2001). Apesar do direcionamento mais etéreo, pastoral, intimista, as reservas emocionais praxe das composições mais pesadas da banda estão intactas, com o disco mantendo, claro, o DNA clássico do Opeth: a entrega visceral de interpretações que soam como uma dramaturgia sonora. Músicas como "Windowpane", "Death Whispered A Lullaby" e "To Rid The Disease", clássicos do cancioneiro do grupo, mostram o porquê o trabalho é um dos melhores da carreira do conjunto e de sua geração. Edwin Jobson (born 28 April 1955) is an English musician noted for his use of synthesizers. He has been a member of several progressive rock bands, including Curved Air, Roxy Music, U.K. and Jethro Tull. He was also part of Frank Zappa's band in 1976–77. Aside from his keyboard work Jobson has also gained acclaim for his violin playing. He won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards. *** Saint-Preux- Le Piano Sous La Mer *** original 1972 🇨🇦 press on Columbia The music on ‘Le Piano Soud La Mer’ (The Piano Under The Sea) is progressive in it’s nature, combining classical music with early seventies hard rock. Each track is an instrumental that relies on the strings, wind instruments and piano work to do the heavy lifting. In other words, it unfortunately leans more towards the classical side than the rock side. Two notable exceptions are - ‘Le Voyage’ (The Voyage) and ‘L’ Abime’ (The Abyss) which are straight up seventies riff-heavy hard rock instrumentals, the former being a funk inspired wah-wah number. For those two tracks alone it’s worth picking up for five or less. Unfortunately for my taste, most of the album gets a bit tedious and a little too classical to the point where I lose interest pretty quickly, save for two more noteworthy tracks - ‘Le Gouffre Armer’ (The Whirlpool) which is most likely the album’s best example of combining the two genres, and the very soundtrack inspired and tripped out ‘La Tempête’ (The Tempest). An interesting blind buy that has enough appeal to keep it around for a bit longer. The wait is over and it's big announcement time...I'm very pleased to share that one of my art pieces I designed for Parallels has been accepted at @mosesianarts upcoming exhibit, Entwined, an exhibit about the integration and influence of visual and textural narratives. My piece being featured, Dimensions of Humanity, is based on The Meaning Maker character, and in the coming weeks I'll reveal why I chose to expand The Meaning Maker into a separate work of art. When I wrote an album about finding purpose and the concept of a multiverse, I never imagined my own world would literally open up into a multitude of worlds. The process of expanding album into visual narrative has been beyond an energizing experience. Seriously, you just never know where things will take you! "Felt was formed in Alabama in the late '60s around the talents of Myke Jackson (guitars), Mike Neel (drums), Tommy Gilstrap (bass), Stan Lee (guitars), and Allan Dalrymple (keyboards). The band's self-titled album, released on the small Nasco label in 1971, contains half-a-dozen original songs written for the most part by Jackson. The mostly blues-styled songs on this album are full of great guitar work and contain fine Beatles-esque harmony vocals. While most of this album has a blues feeling to it, some of the songs hint of progressive rock with swirling keyboards, intense drumming, and blistering guitar solos. The album has recently been discovered for its musical excellence and has become a very rare collectors' item.
