I interrupt your bookish feed to bring to you my newest tiny nephew, Foster! 👶🏻 Foster was born Jan. 11th to my youngest sister. His birth story is one of trauma, & our family is still reeling from it all. My sister tested positive for Covid the day before her induction...and things just went down from there. She arrived to L & D and was diagnosed with preeclampsia and transported via ambulance to a hospital that could better handle a high-risk delivery. Once there, the new hospital wasn't aware she was Covid positive. Once they found out, she was squirreled away in a room with no way to communicate with doctors or nurses, and she wasn't allowed anyone in with her. The hospital made our family leave. She was given pitocen to begin labor, but she stalled out too long at 5cm and was rushed in for an emergency c-section, still all by herself. When Foster was born, there was a collective "Oh!" from the medical staff before the baby was rushed out of the room. My sister didn't get to see her baby. Later, she was told that despite having a perfectly normal anatomy scan at 20 weeks, the ultrasound had missed a bilateral cleft lip and palate. She was told this was severe, and that he was missing ALL of his palate (both hard & soft). Medical staff refused to allow the father to sign the birth certificate because he was also Covid positive. So now he doesn't qualify for paid paternity leave until a new birth certificate is created. Baby Foster was transported via helicopter to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH. My sister was finally able to meet her son, and see him for the first time since the NICU nurses refused to allow her to even video call him to see what he looked like. Everyone has their hobbies. One of mine is ordering cookie cakes. Really, if you can’t say it with a cookie cake you probably shouldn’t say it 😂 today is my son’s 2nd #smileversary . He was born with a cleft lip and palate and got his second smile when he was about 4 months old. Last year we celebrated with this special custom art from @lacey_does and this year we added a @publix cookie cake to the mix. I was pretty vague in my request and they did such a great job for us. I’ve said it before - I think you should celebrate everything and this one is definitely an event worth celebrating!

Mr. Bright Eyes had his two week follow up yesterday. Dr. Wallender said he's looking great! He said over the next few months we might notice it becoming more red and puckered, but that will eventually fade and smooth out. We started massages - 30 seconds, 5x/day for 3 months. Callum protests, but it helps to promote collagen remodeling, decreases itching, and increases the flexibility of the scar. I'm hoping he just gets used to it after the first few days.
Yesterday was 1 week post-op! After being cleaned up a little and his nasel stent coming out this morning(second pic), the site looks so good! We go back on Monday and we'll get instructions on how to massage it to aid in healing.
Doc says "I want him to drink 75ml of milk." Callum says "How about I drink 93ml?" 💪🏼 His intake is our ticket out of this joint, so once we see the nurse next, the paperwork should be started for us to go!

This little love is teaching me all about clefts. I really didnt know much before we found out she would be born with one. I didnt realize you can have a cleft lip only, a lip and hard palate opening, or a lip and soft palate opening. Also there are a number of genetic issues that can be tied to having this as well. She has a cleft with an opening in her soft palate. She will have her lip fixed at 3 months and her palate fixed at 9-12 months. She had a rough go of feeding at first but has it down now! Yesterday I finished sewing my LAST order before baby! 🙌🏼😌 . . . Now I have the next three weeks to get some sewing done for my own baby girl! So far, I finished her blanket made with this beautiful custom fabric 😍 . . . At 20 weeks pregnant, we found out our baby girl has a cleft lip and possible cleft palate (won't know for sure until she is born). Psalm 139:14a says, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made". After hearing the news, this verse came to me and brought me immediate comfort. Happy Friday! This girl had a busy day! We spent some time addressing the issues presented last Friday at her 4 month well-visit, first with a lactation consultant, and then with a physical therapist. Both were fantastic visits! At the LC, we weighed her before and after a feeding and she gained a smidge over 4 oz! This was exciting news and confirmed my theory that she’s nursing fine but actually might have lost weight since starting daycare because she works so hard at, and doesn’t take enough from, her bottles. She needs to be eating enough calories to recover from surgery in a month so we’re going to start fortifying her bottles with formula starting this week, and we’ll go for regular weigh-ins starting next Thursday. We discussed daycare and the bottles that she’s using at length and I won’t get into that but we’re not going to change bottles at the moment and introduce more variables. Next, we saw the Physical Therapist to address Thadea’s torticollis, and what a job that woman has! She was just snugglin and lovin our girl to pieces and it was so fun and so sweet. Her range of motion is good and she doesn’t have any flat spots so it’s just a strengthen and stretch plan to get her head up straight. Everything seems pretty straight forward. We’re feeling great! I freaked out last week after her well visit but we processed everything, we made a plan, and today we got the information we need to move forward. And this girl? Thank you for all your questions and concerns. I know a lot of you were asking what kind of procedure Cielo got done last week. She’s getting a few sessions of steroid injections in her cleft lip scar. Seems as though her muscle has harden and this will help loosen the tension in her muscle, skin and hopefully reduce the visibility of her scar some more. She got her 1st session and were not looking forward to the next one. Even though is an easy process she still has to be put on general anesthesia. T H R E E - M O N T H S Oh what a journey we've had so far, little one. How have three months passed already? The day we were given the diagnosis of your cleft lip was one of the hardest of my life. I had a million questions which I was too scared to ask. Would you be okay? Would you be able to feed? Would you lead a happy life? Would you be stared at and treated differently? And the horribly vain question which bothered me the most, 'Will I still look at my baby and think she's beautiful?' It pains me to say it, but looking back on it all, I can see that all those feelings were totally normal. And the answer to that last, dreaded question is OF COURSE. Oh my goodness, how could I ever have doubted the beauty of this little face. I ADORE this face. She's the most beautiful little thing I've ever laid eyes on (along with my wee Noa, of course). And to any Mummies or Daddies who might be expecting a baby with a cleft, I can hand on heart say that I don't even notice it when I look at her anymore. The next big step in this crazy journey is creeping up on us so quickly. We're currently waiting to hear the date of her first operation. It will most likely be around about the end of next month, and it's really starting to hit us how quickly it's approaching. She'll have her lip repaired, and the face which we love in every single way will be changed for a different face. A face which will 'fit in' more with society and be more accepted. A face which will allow her to grow and thrive without being treated differently or singled out. I know in the bottom of my heart that I will adore her new smile just as much as her current one, but I'm also very aware of the fact that I will grieve her cleft smile to no end. We have just over a month left to take as many photos of our beautiful little Scout as is humanly possibe, before she'll change forever. We got good news about our baby this morning at his appointment everything is healing great! He is 14 pounds 26 inches long now!! His formula will be mixed the same way we have been mixing it so that by time September comes he packs on some more pounds so that he will be ok for his lip repair since we expect him to lose a little bit of weight afterwards. He was so good today for his Nurse and feeding team he makes these hour trips to Children’s a breeze 😊 I can’t even say im ready for round two because im not! I don’t think I’ll ever be ready im not looking forward to him being in pain again but I know we will be another step closer to all this being behind us. #cutiewithacleftie 😍❤️❤️
