I feel the creativity raging inside me. I want to get lost in it, to lose hours to it, to let it free. But motherhood is calling. A child is crying out for me. A den made out of sheets has been built in the living room, someone has scrapped their knee. The editing must stop, the laptops closed, the writing pens must be put down. There is no space for that here. Not right now. They need me and of course the reality is I need them. Motherhood is calling. So I must find a way to quell the fire but to never let it die. To keep those embers warm until little hands are tucked up in bed. To stoke the flames until that time again when I can let my artist blaze. That’s the real creativity of motherhood. It’s not the work made but how one manages the wildfire inside. … Some musings on creativity and motherhood and the hot and cold feelings we experience when we combine the two. OMFG ❤️ . This wasn’t the post I was going to share today… . …I had a cute one of my littlest ‘baby’ all ready to go… . But then this email landed in my inbox… . My initial reaction was that it was a hoax (ever the optimist 😬) . But I’ve been looking at the website on and off all morning and also asked my *uber* critical, inspector gadget of a Husband to look too, and he thinks its legit… . So. . WTF. . I’ve been selected as the best Family Photographer in Maidstone for 2024 after receiving an overall quality score of 95% or over for the past 12 months. . I am blown away ❤️ . Thank you doesn’t even cut it. . This is alllllll down to the wonderful families I meet who take the time to leave beautiful and kind reviews. . A note on the calendar... . ..and my little Swiftie had her bestie over after school to listen to the new album 😍 . …and when I think about it, it was around my daughters age that I decided I was going to be the next Mrs Mark Owen…🤩😂 . I practiced my new signature in my note pad… . I scratched the Take That symbol onto my pencil tin with a compass (and a gold heart of my Mums which she has never gotten over 😬) . My walls were covered in posters… . …and my parents would feel the lounge ceiling shake as me and my neighbour practiced the dance routines in my room… . A few months ago I ran a competition to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of switching from fashion photography to intimate motherhood. My competition winner was @lucygriffiths.birthphotodoula. We decided to wait for spring and to my delight she gave me full creative license to do whatever I wanted - a rare and exciting treat to have a play between photographers. We discussed many things but realised we both had a growing interest towards portraiture so decided to head down this route together. I’m still working on the series but I’m so enlivened (and a bit nervous) to share as soon as they are finished. I think I love them very much but as any artist knows that can feel a bit exposing. I cannot thank Lucy enough for her willingness and enthusiasm for my work. I think we have captured something really beautiful together. Telling a story through photography is one of my favourite ways to do in-home sessions. Cooking, making smoothies or reading books are always a great way to incorporate a more plavful storvline. 1 always love to photograph a picnic, Sunday morning brunch or garden party with friends. So you are super excited for your newborn photoshoot but nervous your little one might not sleep? I hear this a lot on photoshoots and firstly it’s completely ok if your little one doesn’t fall to sleep, so let go of that worry!! Eyes open images are just as beautiful as eyes closed! Here are some things that help to get some 💤 - If possible do a feed just before the session - You are always welcome to do top up feeds during - Clean nappy so little one is super comfortable - A cosy and warm space - White noise or calming music - I will wrap baby, lots of cuddles The main thing is my sessions are completely baby led, so my main priority at all times is that your little one is happy and comfortable!! We’re so lucky to have so much beautiful ancient woodland in Britain, which is home to all sorts of flora and fauna, most notably at this time of year, the gorgeous bluebell! It’s lovely to explore these woods and they’re wonderful for photo shoots. Just be sure to stick to the paths and avoid trampling on them so they return year after year. My mini session dates are Sunday 28th April, Saturday 4th May and Sunday 5th May. I also have availability during the week of 22nd April for preschoolers.
