Kitty Hawk development (work in progress) Over the past 2 weeks, I worked on the starboard side hull and the flight deck. The design process has slowed significantly since I was more busy than usual. For the first week, the main focus was redesigning the aircraft elevators since the clips+bars created too much friction for it to move. Through many experiments and research, I found that the technic pieces + bars work best (slide3). In the second week, the main goal was to finish both the flight deck and starboard side hull. I added some additional details near elevator01 and quickly completed the section between elevator01 and 02. During this process, the bars from the elevators were decreased from 6 to 4 studs apart (slide4). The toughest section was the area under the island/bridge. The original design was structurally insufficient; therefore, a new design was needed. The new design borrowed many design elements from the port side hull (last post). A combination of modified bricks and plates was used to connect everything together, thus distributing the structural load into a larger area and increasing its stability according to the stability model on Stud.io (slides5-6). The last slide was a dev render from 2 days ago. Closing out a week of the USS Kitty Hawk with this beautiful piece from the well-known Japan based Diamond Patch Company and a trio of CV-63 centurion patches from the early 1990s. The fully embroidered 7.5" x 11" centerpiece celebrates the Battlecat's decade forward deployed in Yokosuka between 1998 and 2008. A well detailed Kitty steams in front of Mt. Fuji basking in the setting sun. In the rainbow of colors are every squadron to fly off her deck while assigned to CVW-5 along with the dates they served. The legendary VF-154 Black Knights who flew the Grumman F-14A & their VFA-102 Diamonbacks replacements held in equally high regard by Japanese aircraft enthusiasts rightfully occupy the top row. A centurion patch from the Kitty Hawk was more likely to be seen on a flight jacket of Tomcat pilots and/or RIOs than one from any other aircraft carrier in the United States Navy. That is because more FITRON squadrons sailed with the USS Kitty Hawk on extended deployments of 6 months during the F-14s operational history. Those squadrons in chronological order were: VF-114 Aardvarks, VF-213 Black Lions, VF-51 Screaming Eagles, VF-111 Sundowners, VF-1 Wolfpack, VF-2 Bounty Hunters, VF-24 Fighting Renegades, VF-211 Fighting Checkmates and VF-154 Black Knights. 1991 marked the USS Kitty Hawk's 30th Anniversary. She began the year wrapping up an extensive 4 year SLEP in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard that would add 20 years of life to the Battlecat. She would complete her sea trials in April and finally sail for Norfolk on July 30th. She would spend much of the next 2 months conducting carrier ops with CVW-3 off the Virginia Capes. On October 18th, CV-62 would leave for her new homeport of NAS North Island receiving CVW-15 and their Screaming Eagles & Sundowners Grumman F-14As shortly after departure. Kitty would spend the next 55 days at sea sailing around "The Horn" of South America through transiting the Drake Passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. Along the way in November, Team Wolfpack would conduct exercises with aviation assets from the Argentine Navy. They would also make port visits to St. Thomas, Mar del Plata & Valparaiso, before arriving in San Diego on December 11th. The 4" inch fully embroidered 30th-year patch is nearly identical to one issue for the Kitty's 25th anniversary. The HORNEX '91 patch traces CV-62's route transiting oceans with a nice detailed side view of the ship. **** SUNDAY CRUSIN'! **** Here are a pair of RIMPAC '96 patches from the USS Kitty Hawk participation in the multinational biennial exercise. Not every carrier deployment is a 6 month cruise and in CV-63's case for this RIMPAC, it was only 6 weeks. The Kitty wasn't the only USN carrier involved in the exercise as the INDY participated as well. In fact, the war game scenario petted the fictitious beligerents of CV-62 & CVW-5 and Japanese Self Defense Forces against CV-63 & CVW-11 as well as the remaining participating countries which included Canada, Australia, South Korea and, for the first time, Chile. The 4" RIMPAC 1996 patch patch shows a pair of Navy flat tops with their Grumman Tomcats flying CAP, which in this case were the VF-154 Black Knights(CV-62) and VF-213 Black Lions(CV-63). They are offset by a pair of windsurfer on the North side of the Hawaiian Islands, where the good guys were based. The 5" RIMPAC patch, which I've shared before and is something I do reluctantly, shows the Kitty with a pair of Tomcats and the bird of prey which gave her namesake overhead. Flags of participating countries ring both patches. Did you know that a Navy A-6E from VA-115 from the INDY was shot down by a JAMSDF destroyer CWIS early on during the exercise? We kick-off a week of the USS Kitty Hawk with one last nod to the USS Independence represented in this patch grouping. The fully embroidered Great Turnover patch measures 4.25" x 5" and commemorates the SwapEx done in Hawaii's Pearl Harbor in the summer of 1998. From July 7th to July 17th, the Kitty and Indy would cross dock during SwapEx, which saw CV-62 transfer forward deployed duties to CV-63. The flags of Japan and America show the directions both carriers are headed with a Tomcat on the prowl above the Pacific. Now is when we see what what both aircraft carriers had in the common with the First Navy Jack flag. But first, some history. The historical first Navy Jack dates back to 1775, being down in ships of the Continental Navy. However, at the time, it only had the 13 stripes without the rattlesnake and Don't Tread On Me phrase from the Gadsden flag. These were added around 1976 for our Bicentennial. In 1980, the Secretary of the Navy directed that this updated version of the First Navy Jack be flown by the oldest active duty warship in the Naval Fleet. On July 1, 1995, the USS Independance received this honor with the decommissioning of the administration ship USS Mauna Kea. The Indy was, in fact, the first aircraft carrier to do so and would continue to fly it until turning it over to the Kitty on July 18, 1998. The Battlecat would fly the First Navy Jack proudly for another 11 years until passing it on to a third carrier. Can you guess which one? I've included a few patch versions of the First Navy Jack. In the center is the flag itself correctly proportioned as flown by the Navy. The one on the left is the smaller of 2 versions that I've seen from the USS Kitty Hawk. Finally a novelty version of the flag with a Grumman F-14 mascot Tom and a Don't Tread On Us modification. While there isn't enough detail in patch firm did you know the timber rattlesnake on the actual flag has 13 rings on his rattle as a nod to the original 13 Colonies as well. **** SUNDAY CRUISIN'! **** Here's a vibrant WESTPAC '94 cruise patch from the Screaming Eagles of VF-51 based at NAS Miramar. This fully embroidered beauty measures 5.5" x 3" and has a head view of one of the squadron's Grumman F-14As as well as the screamin' eagle from their official logo with their motto on it's talons flying above the USS Kitty Hawk. All against the backdrop of a rainbow flash, which symbolizes all the components of Carrier Air Wing 15. During this June-December deployment, VF-51 & sister squadron VF-111 flew their Tomcats in support of Operation Southern Watch. There were also some brief nuclear tensions with North Korea following the death of their leader Kim Il-Sung. While VF-51 & VF-111 were originally slated to become the first operational F-14D squadrons, this would sadly be the final cruise for both before being disestablished. Once the Kitty Hawk returned from OIF in may 2003 cruise, the Black Knights of VF-154 had closed the chapter of their time flying and fighting in the F-14 Tomcat. By September, VF-154 would leave Japan as it made ready to transition into the F/A-18F Super Hornet at NAS Lemoore, California.
When Operation Iraqi Freedom kicked off, just over 20 years ago, The Black Knights of VF-154 were in the Northern Arabian Gulf, aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, along with the rest of Carrier Air Wing Five. Aside from the combat, this deployment would be unique for the Black Knights as a detachment of jets, aircrews and maintenance personnel would go ashore to Al Uedid air base in Qatar to support JSOC missions on the ground. Despite losing one jet due a maintenance issue, VF-154, already flying the oldest jets in CVW-5, expended more ordnance on this cruise than any other squadron in the air wing. This giant patch commemorates the cruise with nicely detailed renditions of not only the individual squadrons of the air wing, but the aircraft flown by those squadrons respectively, with of course, a VF-154 Tomcat front and center as God intended.

Shifting gears back to Tomcat patches. Figure I’ll cover some more Marine corps patches further down the road. This one commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Black Knights adopting the VF-154 Designation. While it traces its lineage back to 1946 when it was established as VF-68A and later VF-837, it was not uncommon for squadrons to change designations when moved to different air wings or roles. The little details of this patch worth appreciating are the silhouettes of the different aircraft flown by VF-154 flying by each other as in the original squadron patch as well as the older rendition of Otis, the Black Knights’ mascot with the older shield artwork which matches the tail art originally seen on their Furies and later Crusaders. It wasn’t until the Phantom era that the Black Knights adopted red ray artwork still sported today on their SuperHornets.

USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) adalah kapal induk angkatan laut Amerika Serikat kelas Kitty Hawk. Kapal ini dipesan pada tahun 1956 dan mulai dibangun pada tahun 1957. Kitty Hawk diluncurkan pada tanggal 21 Mei 1960, dan mulai bertugas pada tahun 1961 sebagai kapal induk keempat yang memasuki dinas dalam kelasnya. Kapal ini telah melayani selama lebih dari lima dekade dan mengalami beberapa peningkatan dan modernisasi selama bertugas, termasuk konversi dari bahan bakar minyak ke bahan bakar nuklir pada tahun 1984. Selama bertugas, Kitty Hawk terlibat dalam banyak operasi dan misi militer, termasuk Perang Vietnam, Operasi Enduring Freedom, dan Perang Irak. *** SUNDAY CRUISIN'! *** Here's a grouping from the Black Lions one and only full length cruise onboard the Battle Cat. The highlight is the 6" × 4" fully embroidered 'The Tip Of The Spear' WESTPAC 1997 Air Wing gaggle cruise patch. This features overhead silhouettes abs designations of all CVW-11 units DET components of VRC-30 & VQ-5. Bordering the spearhead are all of CV-63's ports of call. Also included are unique twin tailed, red tongue, white fanged Black Lion squadron patch as well as a Kittyhawk centurion patch. This October 1996-April 1997 WESTPAC would actually be VF-213's final deployment originating from NAS Miramar as they would relocate to NAS Oceana in the Fall of 1997. During this cruise the Black Lions would earn CVW-11's Top Hook by setting a record of 804 consecutive sorties with their Grumman F-14D Tomcats.
