US Navy electronic warfare on Chinese radar controls of the late 1990s. In October 1994, during the standoff with China in the Yellow Sea, US Navy EA-6B Prowlers of the VA-52 onboard USS Kitty Hawk conducted multiple EW(electronic warfare) operations on patrolling Chinese fighters and ground radar sites, temporarily paralyzing PLA communications and command to their fighters and troops. The electronic jamming left PLA commands confused as they would detect hundreds of “enemy targets”, set out by US Prowlers as decoys to mislead and blind the PLA. J-7IIB equipped with western radar (Italian Grifo-7 radar) was sent to confirm the massive enemy fleet but never found a trail of jet wash in the suspected air spaces. “Significant problem” The EA-6B Prowler’s electronic assault proved Chinese radar systems flaunted and outdated for the newest form of electronic warfare. Electronic jamming was common but the volume of the Prowler’s work proved deeper issues. The PLA’s entire coastal and inland military radar system lacked efficiency and experience in their reactions. Most importantly they lacked an automated chain of command. The only automated radar air command was located in Beijing for the security of the capital, the entire coastline had no automation and effective communication between radar commands, causing slow information sharing and chaos of commands. “further down” In the following years of 1996 and 1997, more electronic disruption would be reported by PLA radar sites throughout its eastern coastline, causing fighter takeoffs but no actual contact. Even a case of a “UFO” passing above Inner Mongolia and Northern China, was reported after it disappeared in the Yellow Sea, believed to be of American origin, dodging the PLA’s radar web. The enemy is your best teacher, the development of the J-20, J-16D, and most importantly the reform of entire command systems can be proof, that today’s PLA learned from the best of the best. Kitty Hawk Development (Work in Progress) Over the past weeks, I have been working on the island portion of the Kitty Hawk-class supercarrier. I have created 7-8 variants of the island so far, with 4 designs for the USS Kitty Hawk and 3 for the USS Constellation. There are also plans to design island variants for the USS America. It is still yet to be decided if all designs will be included in the final post. Slide 1 displays the most recent render of the island designs for both USS Kitty Hawk and USS Constellation. These designs are labeled as K1 and K2, respectively, for easier organization. Slides 2-3 detail the process in the design of a dimensionally accurate island, even though, at this point, all pieces within the island are not physically connected to each other. Slide 4 shows the engineering portion of the design process as I begin piecing together what will eventually be the final product. Slide 5 highlights the similarities between the completed model and the concept model seen in Slides 2-3. Slide 6 showcases another variation of the island. Kitty Hawk Development (Work in Progress) Last week, the main focus was on completing the flight deck area. There are many settle angles in the rear flight deck section. The missile launchers located on either side of the flight deck further complicated the design process. The flight deck was narrowed by a few millimeters for the missile launchers to rotate. I have created many design options. I eventually settled on the design on the left due to dimensions and accuracy reasons (Slide 01). During the flight deck design phase, the forward section also required careful engineering as I wanted all angles to meet together without apparent gaps (Slide03). I have also adjusted the designs on the forward bow section, as the new design allows the missile launcher to fully rotate. Left side = New, Right side = Old (Slide02). This week, I finally finished the general ship model. I have begun designing the specific variant of the Kitty Hawk class carrier. From (Slide04 - Slide06) you can see the redesign process for the sides of the ship. I have replaced many angular shapes with curving shapes. The most difficult area was on slide 6 as the front curve had to be just right. Kitty Hawk development (work in progress) Over the past 2 weeks, I worked on the starboard side hull and the flight deck. The design process has slowed significantly since I was more busy than usual. For the first week, the main focus was redesigning the aircraft elevators since the clips+bars created too much friction for it to move. Through many experiments and research, I found that the technic pieces + bars work best (slide3). In the second week, the main goal was to finish both the flight deck and starboard side hull. I added some additional details near elevator01 and quickly completed the section between elevator01 and 02. During this process, the bars from the elevators were decreased from 6 to 4 studs apart (slide4). The toughest section was the area under the island/bridge. The original design was structurally insufficient; therefore, a new design was needed. The new design borrowed many design elements from the port side hull (last post). A combination of modified bricks and plates was used to connect everything together, thus distributing the structural load into a larger area and increasing its stability according to the stability model on Stud.io (slides5-6). The last slide was a dev render from 2 days ago. Named after our nation, USS America (CV-66) would be completed as one of three Kitty Hawk-class aircraft carriers, which would unofficially be considered a 'supercarrier' for her larger and advanced features. For an aircraft carrier of her size (61,174 tons) she was still able to move at a speed of 34 knots with four steam turbines installed. Due to her larger size, she was also able to carry a decent amount of aircraft and defense systems. In 1965, she would officially be commissioned for active service and call Norfolk, Virginia her home port. Got a bug to build a 1/1000 Constitution refit, with the registry of the ship I used to play in the old #FASA role playing game in about 1984 or so. Decided to paint her more like how I would have done a miniature then: emphasize the radial lines, no Aztecing, lots of stark black and white. When my printer decided it couldn’t handle decal paper I was lucky to find someone online producing custom sets for the kit. It’s a neat little kit and was a fun bit of nostalgia to play with! 1991 marked the USS Kitty Hawk's 30th Anniversary. She began the year wrapping up an extensive 4 year SLEP in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard that would add 20 years of life to the Battlecat. She would complete her sea trials in April and finally sail for Norfolk on July 30th. She would spend much of the next 2 months conducting carrier ops with CVW-3 off the Virginia Capes. On October 18th, CV-62 would leave for her new homeport of NAS North Island receiving CVW-15 and their Screaming Eagles & Sundowners Grumman F-14As shortly after departure. Kitty would spend the next 55 days at sea sailing around "The Horn" of South America through transiting the Drake Passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. Along the way in November, Team Wolfpack would conduct exercises with aviation assets from the Argentine Navy. They would also make port visits to St. Thomas, Mar del Plata & Valparaiso, before arriving in San Diego on December 11th. The 4" inch fully embroidered 30th-year patch is nearly identical to one issue for the Kitty's 25th anniversary. The HORNEX '91 patch traces CV-62's route transiting oceans with a nice detailed side view of the ship. **** SUNDAY CRUSIN'! **** Here are a pair of RIMPAC '96 patches from the USS Kitty Hawk participation in the multinational biennial exercise. Not every carrier deployment is a 6 month cruise and in CV-63's case for this RIMPAC, it was only 6 weeks. The Kitty wasn't the only USN carrier involved in the exercise as the INDY participated as well. In fact, the war game scenario petted the fictitious beligerents of CV-62 & CVW-5 and Japanese Self Defense Forces against CV-63 & CVW-11 as well as the remaining participating countries which included Canada, Australia, South Korea and, for the first time, Chile. The 4" RIMPAC 1996 patch patch shows a pair of Navy flat tops with their Grumman Tomcats flying CAP, which in this case were the VF-154 Black Knights(CV-62) and VF-213 Black Lions(CV-63). They are offset by a pair of windsurfer on the North side of the Hawaiian Islands, where the good guys were based. The 5" RIMPAC patch, which I've shared before and is something I do reluctantly, shows the Kitty with a pair of Tomcats and the bird of prey which gave her namesake overhead. Flags of participating countries ring both patches. Did you know that a Navy A-6E from VA-115 from the INDY was shot down by a JAMSDF destroyer CWIS early on during the exercise?
