"The main guns were the most powerful naval weapons of their time. The main battery consisted of ten fourteen-inch guns in four turrets. A major innovation was the rearrangement of the armament. Before Pearl Harbor the Oklahoma was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet. Modernized in 1927 and reassigned to the Caribbean area until 1936, the vessel was sent to embark American citizens in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Reassigned to the Pacific Fleet, the Oklahoma arrived at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in December 1940. Here on Battleship Row the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft on the morning of December 7, 1941. Because the Oklahoma's hull blocked the channel of the harbor, the navy decided to salvage the ship in December 1943. Wire cables were run from land-based winches, and the vessel was eventually rolled to an upright position. Beyond repair, the ship was stripped of her guns and sold for scrap in 1946. Jimmy Doi was born on April 5, 1925 in Oxnard, California. In 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Executive Order 9066 was signed interning thousands of Japanese Americans living on the west coast. After a year and a half, he and others were given the chance to serve in the US Military. Jimmy enlisted on April 12, 1944 and attended basic training at Camp Blanding, FL. He was assigned to G Co., 100th inf. Bn., 442nd RCT, an all Japanese American unit. Jimmy boarded the Queen Mary and arrived in Glasgow Scotland. He landed at Le Havre, France and was transported to northeastern France just as the 100th 442nd completed their missions in the Rhineland. Jimmy participated in the Rhineland-Maritime Alps Campaign. He conducted daily combat reconnaissance patrols and defended an -8-mile stretch from the Mediterranean coast northward into the French Maritime Alps. They were tasked with protecting and guarding against the enemy all on the southern coast of France. They also protected the French pass at Col de Braus that encompassed a strategic road running from Nice to Italy where they continued to battle enemy patrols and snipers. Jimmy Doi was discharged on 8 March 1946. He reenlisted and stayed in the Army until 1949. The Mighty 'MO. There are many occasions that I find myself onboard this historic vessel. The USS Missouri never fails to humble me and reminds me of the sacrifices made by those who came and went before our time. Every time I set foot on this memorial, I think of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the cost of that day and the events that followed. Each opportunity I have to sing the Anthem from the deck of this ship, I try to make it my best performance. Our first stop on Oahu was to Pearl Harbor and to pay our respects at the USS Arizona Memorial. The flags there were all at half-staff to honor the last USS Arizona survivor, Lou Conter, who died on April 3, 2024, at the age of 102. They remained lowered until his body was interred on April 23, 2024. It was a sobering visit, as it should be. #ussarizona #ussarizonamemorial #pearlharbor
Louis Anthony Conter was an American naval officer and aviator. At the time of his death on April 1, 2024, he had been the last remaining survivor of the USS Arizona BB-39 bombing. He helped save others that day, and while he’d received approval for flight training prior to the infamous Pearl Harbor attacks, his PBY Catalina flying boat pilot training was put on hold while he assisted in putting out fires and retrieving bodies of the fallen. He went on to be assigned to Patrol Squadron Eleven (VP-11), planes in that squadron known as Black Cats, and was reportedly shot down twice. These experiences, and others, led Conter to create the Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape program in 1954.
