We are excited to share this stunning Dan Kyle painting, new to MBC as part of our upcoming Summer Group Exhibition! @dan_kyle @martinbrownecontemporary Work featured: Dan Kyle The spring at Mt Tootie creek, 2023, Oil and mixed media on canvas, 135 x 170 cm, $13,000 We asked Dan to share some insight into his journey from art school, his creative inspirations, and the changes in his work since his debut show: Does your background in ceramics inform your painting? Definitely. I spent years at art school trying to make the perfect drippy, matte, pastel and ochre glazes. I think that has definitely been reflected in my painting. I was digging up clay in the ground on my property and processing it myself to make pots. After firing it had this pinky, rusty, earthy colour that I'm still so obsessed with making, but now in paint. Which artists inspire you? Whenever I feel stuck, I go straight to Tony Tuckson. His big, free, abstract paintings always awe me. Flicking through any of his books makes me want to paint straight away and when I get to see them in the flesh at AGNSW it's like seeing them for the first time. The reaction is always the same. How has your practice developed since your first exhibition with MBC? I think I'm always exploring in my work. When I get bored with working, I move away and try new things then when I come back it feels so fresh and exciting. I pick up all these new ideas and influences along the way. I think it's necessary for artists to go on tangents. Paper daisies were prolific after the fires, preferring the disturbed ground to grow and spread. Flowers of the fringes, the paper daisies mark the zone between humans and the wilderness. Dan Kyle lives and works on 40 acres of untouched Darug bushland on the fringe of the Wollemi National Park in Kurrajong Heights, NSW. His established garden, a wild couple of acres, offers endless tools for mark making. Camellias in the winter and Dahlias in the summer. The studio sits above two flowing creeks that meet at the foot of the hills. It is from here that Kyle is able to witness the landscape in all of its stages. Dan studies the changes in light, temperature and atmosphere from hot hazy days to downpours of rain. Dan witnesses the shifting of seasons and the effects of catastrophic events exacerbated by global warming such as wildfires, droughts and floods. Through the repetitive printing of hundreds of Camellia and Dahlia flowers that he nurtures and harvests himself, Kyle can make pictures that are completely his own and without exterior influence. Happy Thanksgiving! Today I'd like to feature some records from Pacific Arts, Michael Nesmith's label from the '70s. Pacific Arts hosted an impressive array of genres and artists, and a friend of mine loaned me these records to indulge my curiosity. Pacific Arts albums don't show up in shops very often, but they can be found for reasonable prices online. There are lots of treasures to be explored: latin jazz on •Rainflowers• by Susan Muscarella, rustic country-rock from Rank Strangers, and the catchiest power pop this side of The Knack on the self-titled album by Jet.
