It’s been a bit of a quiet period. Finally got my hands into the clay again. I started the heart at a lesson last Tuesday. Filled some gaps and added the bee and the butterfly. Just waiting for it to dry fully now before undercoating and painting. The lions head has been in the freezer for ages, it finally found a place. The MDF board/ plaques I found the while cleaning up some of the storage I gave, I haven’t seen these for a few years😀. They have been given a coat of sealer, the larger oval has puffed a bit, but I cover that in Gyprock . Turnwood. Sculptural work. Plaster armature, driftwood, reclaimed rope, snail shells, thread, gilding. 50 X 50 X 50 This work grew out of my investigations into the historical archives around the death of Mary Smith in 1835 at the hands of her husband Andrew Smith. The historical archive shows that in 1832 the young Thomas Turner & his brothers built a cottage up the Blackwood River at Talinup, Augusta, away from the parental home. By 1836 the cottage had been burnt to the ground by the local Wadandi and Pibelmen people. My GGG Grandmother and her husband were indentured servants to the Turner Family, arriving to Talinup with the first settlers in 1830. From 2000 to 2010 we lived with our new little family at North Bay Kudardup, across the other side of the bay to where the Turner Brothers cottage is likely to have been. One morning Ben went wandering the estuary for signs of where the cottage was burnt down and found small wooden plank remnants in the water. These pieces of wood form part of the base in this work. Many of my sculptural works that compromise our Newlyweds' Dream Exhibition 2024 have come out of my ongoing interrogation of the historical archive around the death of Mary Smith in 1835. It’s very surreal and a bit dream-come-true-ish to see our home, our fixer-upper, in the pages of the new issue of Country Style magazine. Even Locky looked a little bit proud, and that’s kind of a big deal. We moved in just over two years ago. It was a big year leading up to that to get the old doctors’ house ready with lots of help from family and friends, and every weekend there’s a little bit more work to do but slowly, slowly it’s started to feel like our home. This is a big renovation story, a story of family and vintage and using what you have, and old treasures that make a place feel warm and loved and lived in. Of layers and textures and little boys with Lego scattered everywhere. A story of High Street Vintage, my mum’s little business that has my sister and I in its thrall, always trying to passionately convert people to love ‘old stuff’ as much as we do. I didn’t expect to move home to Kimba, but the pull of my family and of Workshop26 was too strong to ignore - it grabbed me like a magnet and now I could barely live closer to it if I tried. Over the next little while I’ll share some stories of the reno, because it is a big part of us, but for now here’s a few of the beautiful ‘after’ photographs taken by the oh-so-clever Hannah Puechmarin that are featured in the mag. The Servant. Cold Breezes, windswept island. Bull rushes, swans and coots. Feathers adrift on the tide. Blackened wood, dingoes. Fear. Life Lost Betrayed by the hands of love. 189 years ago Mary Smith my G.G.G.Grandmother was killed in the early colony of Augusta Western Australia, Talinup by her husband in an act of domestic violence. Andrew Smith came home for his lunch and found his wife talking with the Keenan brothers next door. In anger, at his dinner not ready he pushed her against the side of the primative kitchen door frame. The blow she sustained to her head would kill her by day's end. The babe Polly (Mary) Smith, just 3 months old (my GG Grandmother) was in her arms at the time of the assault and fell from her Mother's arms when Mary was hit. We know the events of the day as it appears to be the first reported murder trial within the Settler Community and was presided over by Captain Molloy. Both Andrew and Mary were indentured servants to the Turner Family. Andrew was never punished for his crime, though the community of peers agreed Mary's death was at his hand. At the Mosman Art Walk 2024 ‘Balmoral Island through the trees’@timjohnston) sold for $9,800. Timothy Johnston, or TJ, is an emerging contemporary artist. His art was shown on the sails of the Sydney Opera House, World Ocean Day 2021. TJ began painting at an early age. He has had many solo and group exhibitions. His studio gallery is in Mosman, he travels between Sydney and LA. ‘Balmoral Island through the trees’ was on exhibition @dracakisjewellers during the Mosman Art Walk 22 February - 11 March 2024. The buyer of TJ's 'Balmoral Island through the trees’ has much pleasure ahead and the added satisfaction of knowing 70% of the purchase price goes directly to the artist, and 30% to Mosman High's Visual Arts Department.
