It was interesting to see the palm shadows falling right at the wave break on the beach. Why is the beach so relaxing and frequently used in healthcare art? 1. Associations: Many people associate the beach with vacations, relaxation, and leisure. 2. Biophilic: Biophilia is the innate human attraction for nature, and the beach with its warmth and soothing sounds is a uniquely powerful trigger for this biophilic response. 3. White noise: the rhythmic sound of waves lapping up on the shore is relaxing in itself, but the white noise may mask other disturbing sounds. 4. At Elms we love showing larger work and try to fill the space with a variety of different mediums and scales, but you can’t change the dimensions. I painted Leaning and Blooming in LA during lockdown. Huntington Gardens let a small number of guests in and I took my cousin Lindsay to draw in the cactus garden. We packed up our art supplies and did many drawings and photos of their magnificent plants. While I was sitting there observing the enormous cacti, I noticed how they leaned on each other. This was very similar to the way we leaned on each other during that difficult time. It was a sweet experience to share my favorite drawing spot with my cousin @lindsayvirgilio.art who shares the same passion for art. The day passed by in a flash and I felt so connected healed and happy right there sitting amongst these magnificent botanicals. The Buddhists say when you lose track of time doing something you love, you are doing your dharma or performing your life's purpose. I believe the universe wants us to be happy joyful and free despite unresolved problems. That day we found a way to escape our fears and absorb the powerful combination of commuting with nature and art. It was truly a magical day. I came home a started this painting from the sketches I did that day. My home in the bush. Most mornings begin with a coffee in hand and a stroll through the rambling, mostly native garden spread over approximately an acre, and today was no different. Started from a scratch a couple of years ago (with the exception of an old oak and elm, massive old gums and cypress trees) the garden has quickly blossomed and is unrecognisable from the barren land that it was.
