Found in the archives… my signed poster from the MC5 Sonic Revolution tour. The band did an instore at Big Star Records on Rundle Street before the show later that night. It was wild! All these legends together in one store just hanging out and chatting to the fans. Evan Dando wasn’t at the signing but did perform at the show. The show was pretty damn good and I had an awesome time. I had dinner with Mark Arm after the signing / before the show at the Pasta Palace on Hindley Street where I interviewed him about all kinds of cool things. Nicknamed "Machine Gun" for his rapid-fire drumming style, Thompson's aggressive rhythms became a hallmark of the band's explosive performances. His contributions helped propel MC5 to stardom with hits like "Kick Out the Jams," which remains a defiant anthem of the era. Throughout his career, Thompson influenced countless musicians with his innovative drumming that prefigured punk and metal genres. Michael y yo nos fuimos a Florida con ese vehículo y fue el viaje más rápido a Florida que hice en automóvil: íbamos a un promedio de 200 kilómetros por hora. Fue divertido. ¿Por qué hicieron esos autos para que la gente se enoje con nosotros? Todos crecimos en las drag races. Pero los autos rápidos y las cervezas no encajan con el arroz integral y el Zen. Hay un choque ahí. Ni siquiera es un choque político, es un choque cultural. No lo abandonamos a Sinclair para nada, es solo que no había nada que pudiéramos hacer. R.I.P. Dennis Thompson, MC5 Founding Member and Drummer, Dead at 75 Dennis Thompson, whose powerhouse drumming drove the MC5, has died at the age of 75, according to the Detroit Free Press. He was the last surviving founding member of the band. The MC5 were one of the most aggressive and politically active bands of the 1960s and their driving brand of rock music was a foundation of punk rock, Motorhead and every strain of hard rock that followed. According to the Free Press, Thompson passed away at MediLodge of Taylor, where he had been rehabilitating following a heart attack in April. The band are set for a long overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this fall. That’s what those Detroit guys could summon in a heartbeat. If you listen to live, demo and bootlegged tracks from this era, it’s abundantly clear how much heat he brought, no overdubs or do-overs required. With Brother Wayne Kramer recently passed, we’ve now lost the original lineup of the MC5, true musical pioneers and renegades.
