Perception Through the Lens and the Perspective of the Mind What photos you take and how you take them may reflect on how you perceive the world around you. Composition, color, framing, etc. - all play a part here. At least, that’s what I tend to believe. This photo of the crow looked pretty cool to me, and I do have a peculiar history of being stared at by crows when I start to get out of a rut. Maybe it’s a stretch, but let me imagine things here. But I got reminded that behind this crow is one of the oldest graveyards in Dhaka. This place was also the entryway to Dhaka hundreds of years ago. I completely failed to include that. Constantly being reminded that I lack the vision I used to have is quite frustrating let me tell you. The absolute barrage of chaotic events only inclines me to look inward and shut myself out. A defense mechanism perhaps. A little selfish for sure. Isolating myself to retreat and recollect when life gets a little tough is a thing that has worked well but the costs associated with this are a lot. Burned bridges, failed romantic endeavors, missed opportunities, and all that. When you narrow down your perception to such extremes, you miss the bigger picture. (Yeah Captain Obvious). If you waste another few minutes of your life and take a look at some of the pictures I took way earlier, you could probably see the difference. You’ll see the subjects as well as the context. A wide viewpoint, as wide as the lens allows. And that’s the vision I now lack, the perception of the bigger picture, in photos, in life. It ain’t all doom and gloom though. Everything returns to its natural state eventually. Besides, learning things the hard way is a lifestyle for me at this point. It’s way more fun that way. Sure you burn everything you previously held dear to, but it makes for a fun story that’s better kept untold.

Eid and an Epiphany Conversations with your close ones, although often frustrating, reveal a lot about who you truly are. And in random conversations throughout the years, I found myself being flagged as “selfish” and even “ruthless.” It sounds cool and edgy until you have to deal with the consequences- severed ties, ruined relationships and all that. Then you end up being alone thinking why nobody likes you. Perhaps this selfishness comes from my fear of taking responsibility. Maybe it’s just my immaturity. I’ll find out soon enough, I hope. This is a picture of my mother’s hands. To me, she is the epitome of kindness and sacrifice. Maybe if I was close to her, I’d adopt a little bit of these traits within me. But it’s never too late to make a change for the better. And I think I’ve made significant progress lately. Regardless, I’m aware that change comes after a lot of friction. Try to be kind to others. It’s probably one of the most humane things you can do.

I often wonder what I'd do if I met my adolescent self. He used to be terrified of storms, the absence of ammu, and going to school. Talking to other kids, answering the teacher's questions - everything about school used to spike his stress levels. He liked to play with toys, and liked to watch movies and cartoons all day. He used to draw a lot. He knew he was bad at it. Didn't care at all. He didn't like studying, but tried when push came to shove. If I were to tell him how life is right now, he'd have one more thing to be terrified about. One more thing to be stressed out about. I'd have to explain to him how ridiculous this young adult life in a soulless city is. Feels like there's a storm everyday. The kid who couldn't think of existing without his mother now doesn't even sit beside her for more than once a week. I have new toys to play with. These ruined my psyche. I don't like watching anything. I don't think I'll ever draw anything other than shitty infographics. The only thing that hasn't changed is the distaste for institutions. But he could blame me for it too. Kendrick said circus acts only attract those that entertain. All this to say, I've lost touch. If I met that little Nafi, I couldn't look him in the eyes. I'd have to tell him I got caught up fantasizing about what Nafi should be. And during that, I lost it. If you've read this far, connect to your roots. Being that child again in this world is like the biggest act of rebellion to me. At least that's what I think. Because that child Nafi wouldn't be so lost. He'd be anxious about a lot of things. But not lost. He'd know how to guide himself, and not live another person's life.
