2024 turtle releases have begun! After receiving excellent TLC and spending numerous months at @ontarioturtlecc due to various injuries, these turtle friends went back home this weekend. . . The snapping turtle in pictures 1&2 walked eagerly into the water and went for a short swim around before coming back to say goodbye (I would like to believe 🤣) and giving me enough time to snap a quick photo. We watched from afar as they explored and then went on to burry themselves into the mud and weeds. The other turtle, in picture 3, seemed a little more cautious and took their time settling in to their surroundings. . . In recent days wolf 1048M has been seen in Lamar Valley. Now this may not seem like a big deal to some folks because he spent most of his life in this area but a couple years ago he left the Junction Butte pack and traveled south to join the Mollies pack. The Mollies, along with 1048, have come north on what seems to be a hunting trip. These blackbirds need marshes next to natural grasslands, but this habitat mix is declining rapidly. Today the saffron-cowled blackbird survives in four disjunct areas in E Paraguay, SE Brazil, S & E Uruguay, and NE Argentina. In Argentina, their habitat includes the rolling countyside of agricultural fields and cow pastures. They forage mostly on the ground, eating insects, spiders, and small vertebrates. Blackbirds are social, gathering in small groups and larger flocks, often with other species. Threats include illegal pet trade, replacement of natural grassland with pine and eucalyptus plantations, drainage of wetlands, fire, and disease. The lagoon sand worm is found in gravely, sandy and muddy substrata in water only slightly less saline than seawater. This rare, small worm is ribbon-like in appearance, and has three eyes on its head. The body comprises 26 or 27 segments, each of which bear bristles known as chaetae. The name of this group of worms, polychaetes, means ‘many bristles’. This worm has been discovered in three places in the UK but has vanished from one and is in low numbers in the two others; consequently, it is critically endangered. Great news! 🐢 The Sea Turtle Rescue Assistance and Rehabilitation Act of 2023 (H.R. 2560) overwhelmingly passed the U.S. House of Representatives on April 11, 2024. This is a huge step towards the act becoming a law and the creation of a permanent grant program to support the organizations that care for threatened and endangered sea turtles. TCA and other organizations and have been advocating for this legislation over the past few years. Accomplishments like these can take time and the collective efforts of many groups and individuals. As morning wore on, the bright sun that clung above the mountains to the southeast, finally warmed the frosted air and creatures stirred about the valley. Bright orange bison calves bounced in circles around their mother's until they paused, allowing them to suckle. By the ephemeral pond a pair of sandhill cranes danced and called out loudly in their other worldly voices.
