The Bluestripe Pipefish, scientifically known as Doryrhamphus excisus, is a visually striking species found in tropical coral reef ecosystems of the Indo-Pacific. Despite being less commonly requested in Lembeh, they are a delightful subject for photographers. Recognisable by their vibrant blue horizontal stripes against an orangey-yellow body, Bluestripe Pipefish typically measure just a few centimetres in length but can grow up to 15 centimeters. They blend seamlessly into their habitat of shallow coastal waters and coral reefs, often seen among branching corals and rocky crevices. Their mating behaviour is fascinating, involving elaborate courtship displays. As external brooders, the male plays a unique role in reproduction, caring for fertilised eggs deposited by the female on a brood patch on the underside of their body until they hatch. Photographing Bluestripe Pipefish presents challenges due to their slender bodies and constant movement. Achieving focus can be tricky, and their active behaviour amidst busy environments adds to the difficulty of capturing the desired composition. The Ocellated Tozeuma Shrimp, is one of many fascinating crustacean species that we find here in Lembeh. These small shrimp are known for their striking appearance and unique behaviour. One of the most distinctive features of the Ocellated Tozeuma Shrimp is its elongated body, which can reach lengths of up to 5 centimetres. They have a slender, streamlined shape with short antennae and distinct coloration patterns. The body is typically brightly coloured and semi translucent, allowing for efficient camouflage among coral reefs and sponges. What sets the Ocellated Tozeuma Shrimp apart is its incredible camouflage, perfectly mimicking sponges or other protruding appendages of the substrate. Often their colour is matching with their habitat of choice like in this photo, the small rings where they get their ocellated name also mimics the holes you often see on sponges. Their elongated body shape fits perfectly, appearing purely as an extension of the structure it is perched on. Taking their photo is an odd sort of a challenge as they are extremely efficient at avoiding camera lenses. Whichever way you position yourself, these shrimp will simply wiggle around the opposite site of the sponge. If you wait long enough, they will get accustomed to you and then by using a wide open aperture or creative lighting like a snoot, you can highlight them well in your image despite the impressive camouflage. The Forster’s Hawkfish (Paracirrhites forsteri) are one of the largest species of hawkfish found in the Red Sea. Perched up high on rocks or coral, protected by their large, skinless pectoral fins, they swoop down from a height to snatch prey out of the water column, much like their avian namesakes.

For those familiar with Blackwater diving, or those who follow our Blackwater posts, encountering alien-like creatures is not uncommon. However, the Glass squid takes this experience to another level. These fascinating cephalopods are found in oceans worldwide, primarily inhabiting deep-sea habitats and often residing deeper than 1000 meters. Their defining feature is their translucent body, which gives them the appearance of glass, hence their name. Evolved to thrive in the extreme conditions of the deep sea, glass squids possess unique adaptations. Their transparent body allows them to seamlessly blend into their surroundings, rendering them virtually invisible to both predators and prey. Achieved through the absence of pigmentation and the presence of fluid-filled chambers within their bodies, this transparency creates a glass-like appearance. Glass squids typically exhibit elongated bodies with a slender mantle and a pair of large, complex eyes. Some even sport bizarre appendages where their eyes are located. Additionally, they possess a spacious internal chamber filled with ammonium, a substance lighter than seawater. This buoyant body construction reduces the need for vigorous swimming to stay suspended in the water column. Despite their intriguing nature and deep-sea habitat, much about the biology and behaviour of glass squids remains poorly understood. However, advancements in deep-sea exploration and technology continue to unveil new insights into these mysterious creatures, offering valuable knowledge about their ecology and evolutionary history. Whip Coral Gobies, are small fish that inhabit whip corals (genus Xenia). With elongated bodies and fins, they navigate through whip corals' delicate structures with ease, using them for shelter and camouflage. These gobies blend seamlessly with whip corals, making them difficult to spot for predators and divers alike. Their relationship with whip corals is fascinating; they rely on them for protection and habitat. Whipgobies can often be found perched high on whip coral branches, waiting to ambush passing prey. They primarily feed on small zooplankton and other tiny organisms drifting in the water column, using their sharp eyesight and quick reflexes to capture their prey. These little gobies are often people's first experience with photographing gobies as they are not only easy to find, but there are various techniques you can employ when taking their photo. Whether it may be using a snoot or trying to get black backgrounds, there are many options. On this day the water was fairly clear and as the whip coral was positioned with lots of water behind it, I chose to use a wide aperture of f/5 to absorb plenty of ambient light to get this blue background. 🐚 Banded Sea Snake / Banded Sea Krait The Banded Sea Snake is very vulnerable when it comes to the surface to breathe. He avoids going up into open water, where he could be cut in two by a barracuda for example. This is why a Banded Sea Snake can target a diver and stick to him when coming up to breathe. Frogfish are masters of camouflage, employing various strategies to blend seamlessly into their surroundings. Their ability to mimic their environment is crucial for both hunting and avoiding predators. One of the most remarkable aspects of frogfish camouflage is their ability to slowly change colour and texture to match their surroundings. They can adjust their skin pigments to blend in with the coloration of nearby objects such as coral, sponges, or algae. Additionally, their skin is often covered in small protuberances or filaments that resemble the texture of their surroundings, further enhancing their camouflage. Frogfish also utilise disruptive coloration, which involves having contrasting patterns or colours that break up their body outline. This makes it difficult for predators or prey to detect their exact shape and size. Some frogfish species even have appendages or growths that mimic algae or other objects, providing additional camouflage. Furthermore, frogfish are capable of changing their body posture to enhance their camouflage. They can adopt a cryptic posture, tucking in their fins and appendages to appear like a nondescript lump on the seafloor. Alternatively, they may extend their lure or appendages to mimic a prey item or a harmless object, luring unsuspecting prey within striking distance. Overall, frogfish camouflage is a remarkable adaptation that allows these fascinating creatures to thrive in their underwater environment, making them elusive and intriguing subjects for underwater photographers and divers. Nudibranchs are marine gastropod mollusks prized for their vibrant colours and intricate patterns. Found in oceans worldwide, these creatures come in over 3,000 species, displaying a wide range of shapes, sizes, and hues. Underwater photographers and marine enthusiasts are drawn to their diversity, making them popular subjects. Their striking colours serve as warnings to predators and are often influenced by their diet, which includes toxic organisms like sponges and corals. Incorporating these toxins into their tissues makes nudibranchs unpalatable or even harmful to predators, a defence mechanism called aposematism. Besides their vibrant hues, nudibranchs exhibit diverse shapes and structures. Some species boast elaborate cerata, extending from their bodies and containing branches of the digestive gland. Others have intricate rhinophores on their heads, aiding in chemical detection and navigation. Nudibranchs employ unique reproductive strategies. Many are hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female reproductive organs. During mating, they engage in complex courtship behaviours, exchanging sperm. After fertilisation, they lay egg masses, varying in shape and colour.
