Unfortunately trainers such as @anna__chulkova__ see no wrong in captivity. These dolphins are kept in a chlorinated tank and forced to ‘dance’ with her in order to be fed frozen fish. In the wild they would swim up to 80 miles a day. We’re these poor souls captured during the Taiji dolphin hunts? Unfortunately we don’t know. But what we DO know is that they were stolen or bred for a much shortened life in captivity. Anna Chulkova and others like her help keep this industry going. Positive Reinforcement & Target Training. • In the marine mammal community, the common misconception that withholding food is used as a training technique but the truth is, they use positive reinforcement training which is what every ethical trainer of any species uses today. Punishment's are never used. When an animal presents a behaviour the trainer doesn't want, the behaviour is ignored instead of rewarded. • A cue is needed such as a click or whistle which the animal will be taught to associate the cue with a reward so when they hear it, they understand they presented the correct behaviour. This will teach the animals to become excited for training sessions as they know rewards will be given to them. • Target training is teaching the animal to keep their nose or rostrum on the pole which the trainer will use to guide the animal to where they'd like. To first teach them this, you'd cue and reward the animal everytime they look at the pole and then eventually they'll begin touching it. • Training these behaviours is both mentally and physically stimulating, and is a great problem-solving activity for these incredible and complex animals. • How amazing is that? It's okay to have a break. 'I need to get that big shark blog ready and published," and "what do I talk about today?" As well as finding times for my projects behind the screens. All this while completing exams at college and constantly writing up assignments. • While my friends at college have a day off from college or are now starting Easter half term I'm still working. Though I enjoy what I do sometimes the pressure can still get to me. The last few weeks something has gotten in the way of me publishing that shark blog and writing my other projects as well as getting home at 6 on a weekday and going for an atleast 2-4 hour walk daily (a hobby of mine). As you can see that's a lot and sometimes I find myself writing until times like 1am but what I never think about is stopping. It's hard but I love it. I love to write and I love animals so why not write about animals?! • My dad asked me why don't I get a weekend job to earn money and I said "I'd rather work for free on something I enjoy than work somewhere I don't enjoy." Yes I do this all for free! Although I'm in a position where I have no bills to pay as I live with my parents, I wouldn't change it for the world. • But I realised that I had worn myself out and it's okay to have a break every now and then. So many times I've taken "breaks" but I still found myself at that computer of mine because that's where I know I make a difference: in my blogs. Some days it can be hard to get onto the chair at first, that's completely normal, but it's then hard to get myself off that chair haha! • It's not just non-fiction I right. You see, I have many short fiction stories because (I believe it's due to my autism), I have such strong imagination I love to write out the many tales I picture in my mind when I'm falling asleep, in the morning when I am waking up, the bus, the train, when I'm walking and sometimes I'll find myself imagining my own stories while watching movies (😅). I'm not just a writer, I'm an imaginator. But you see, publishing a fiction story is so much more intimidating then releasing a non-fiction work. I wrote these stories but I don't publish them.
