BREAKING: Two orcas injured during transfer in Japan. • These two photos show Lovey, a 26 year old female orca, with a deep gash on her lower chin allegedly following a chaotic transfer procedure at Kamogawa SeaWorld, Japan. Her 23 year old sister Lara is also said to be injured but to a lesser degree. • The injury apparently occurred on April 24th when 18 year old female orca Ran 2, Lovey & Lara’s younger sister, was moved from Kamogawa to Kobe Suma SeaWorld, set to formally open in June. • Both parks are owned by the Granvista Group. The time between the final decision to move the orca & the crane arriving, was said to be only 1 hour. Allegedly, this meant that the orcas were not able to be separated before the crane was moved into place in the medical pool. The commotion & sight of the crane triggered the orcas to panic. • Whilst the exact cause of Lovey’s injury is not immediately clear, the appearance is consistent with a collision with a hard surface such as the tank walls. In 2012, SeaWorld San Diego’s male orca Nakai (now deceased) suffered a similar yet much more drastic and deep wound allegedly from a collision with the tank wall/ tank gate whilst escaping conflict. • Forced transfers & separations in the captivity industry are common & usually performed purely for business interests, in this case the Granvista Group wanted 2 orcas to perform at their new park. At Kobe, following her own separation from her daughter & grandson, 36 year old female orca Stella was subjected to 25 days in total isolation before the arrival of Ran. As a kid, I was obsessed with marine life, especially dolphins. They just seemed like the essence of freedom and joy. The only place where I could see them however was the Nürnberg Aquarium. I remember visiting several times a year, always heading straight for the underwater viewing area where I´d glue myself to the glass for hours, completely absorbed in watching them swim, while everyone else went to see other animals. These visits ignited my dream of becoming a marine biologist. I didn't really care about the science part, I just believed that it would be my ticket to swim with them all day. However, living in a place where the nearest ocean felt like it was on another planet made my dream seem pretty far-fetched. Over time, I sort of lost that ocean dream. Everything changed when I started surfing. Suddenly, I was reconnecting with the ocean. That eventually led to diving and then underwater photography. Now, I actually get to swim with dolphins regularly - not as a scientist, but as a photographer. Seeing freedom in the wild has totally changed my view on what freedom truly means. The tanks that used to fascinate me as a kid now stand for everything I'm against. While I´m out there enjoying the open ocean, the dolphins that first made me fall in love with the sea are still stuck behind glass. It’s ironic: We celebrate dolphins for their free-spirited nature, yet lock them up behind bars. I think there are smarter ways to teach our kids about marine life. Those dolphins kept in tanks, they are only shadows of their real spirit. They are (sad) reality - but at the same time, they´re not real. People are often disconnected from what happens in the ocean. The only way for them to realise this incredible world full of freedom is to see it with their own eyes - preferably out there in the wild, or, if that´s not possible, through photos and videos. Rescue of a Newborn Beluga Whale in the St. Lawrence Estuary, Quebec, Canada 🇺🇸 An orphaned newborn beluga whale was rescued and maintained in a pinniped medical pool for 10 days. The animal was tube fed with a highly energetic artificial milk formula, and received antibiotics as prophylaxis. The animal had never nursed. The necropsy showed neonatal pulmonary atelectasis, a condition not previously reported in a cetacean that could explain the observed listing. 🇫🇷 Un béluga orphelin nouveau-né a été sauvé et maintenu dans une piscine médicale à pinnipèdes pendant 10 jours. Treatment of a Live Stranded Young Risso’s Dolphin (Grampus griseus) 🇺🇸 On April 24, 1993, a live stranded Risso’s dolphin was brought to Sea World of Texas. The animal was a 2 to 3 week old. The dolphin arrived in poor condition suffering from multiple lacerations, a wound on the dorsal fin, and a lesion on the abdomen. The animal had signs of pneumonia. Antibiotic and antifungal therapy was initiated. A milk formula was provided initially via stomach tube until the dolphin learned to nurse efficiently from a bottle. As of January 14, 1994, the dolphin was 167.5 cm in length, weighed 81 kg, and appeared in good health. 🇫🇷 Le 24 avril 1993, un dauphin de Risso nouveau né échoué a été amené à Sea World Texas. In collaboration with our friends @vegansriseup under Shut Down SeaQuest Las Vegas, a project between them and @nevadavoters4animals, we’ll be holding space in light of the recent story of more deaths in February, and another whistleblower coming forward about SeaQuest’s sadistic practices. ▪️Why is what is clear animal cruelty allowed to continue? Animals overall, especially the sea animals, reptiles and birds exploited at SeaQuest, have few protections under laws and ordinances. They’re viewed as objects and property who don’t feel pain- which is why SeaQuest and places like them think it’s okay to starve them (so they’ll interact more with the paying guests.) As the whistleblowers in the latest investigation describe, SeaQuest takes advantage of these loopholes to continue making money off the literal backs of suffering and dying animals while both lying to children, and also putting them in dangerous situations. ▪️Why is SeaQuest LV still in business? Loopholes, and because they bring business to a “dying mall”, The Boulevard. Doing these protest for years and talking to actual locals in the area, many don’t support this place- but such as many other places in Vegas, tourists often patronize what they want to believe is a “fun experience.” If it makes money in Vegas, a business can and will stay open despite who is harmed in the process- unless the people don’t stop pushing for change. ▪️What can we do? Continue speaking up. Actively encourage anyone and everyone to never patronize any SeaQuest and places that use animals for profit, and if you see something, don’t stay quiet.

For comparison, the illegally sized tank Tokitae used to occupy alone (except for several dolphin companions) at Miami Seaquarium was 80 foot long and 20 feet deep. It’s not surprising then that 4 orcas trapped in such a tiny tank with little room to manoeuvre, may have, in a state of confusion and panic, collided with each other and/or the tank surfaces. Absolutely NOTHING has been started on Kshamenk’s sea pen. No site has been selected, no blueprints, no concept art, no funding has been secured, no materials have been ordered, not a single thing has been built, no permits and so much more. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. If Kshamenk is not moved to another killer whale facility, he WILL die at Mundo Marino. He will end up like Tokitae and Kiska. Dying alone in an outdated facility, waiting for a sanctuary that will NEVER be built. History will repeat itself. Kshamenk will NEVER see a sea pen in his native waters, it will never be built. He’s past the average life expectancy for a male killer whale, and likely doesn’t have much time left. Not to mention he will still be isolated from his species even IF a hypothetical sea pen is built. His only chance at NOT dying alone at Mundo Marino is being transferred to another facility with killer whales, such at SeaWorld San Antonio or Port of Nagoya Aquarium. I do not support these facilities, but they will be able to provide Kshamenk with better care, larger tanks and most importantly, companionship with other killer whales. Kshamenk shouldn’t die alone. In Mexico, Keiko the orca and the star of Free Willy could barely jump out of the water with his full body out as his tank was very shallow and his tail would touch the bottom of the tank. He was also underweight and sick with papilloma virus around his body. Once he got to Oregon, he was taught by his trainers to jump higher, and he could finally jump with his whole body out as his tank was much deeper and colder. He increased by 2000 pounds in weight, his papilloma virus disappeared, and he gained a lot of muscle from his workouts, as you can see in this picture. His dorsal fin even got straighter by a few degrees, and this would continue in Iceland. Photo by Linda M. Nacimos como una simple guía de perros y gatos y creamos una comunidad y una página web para que la vida con ellos pueda ser más fácil. Nos encontramos con que casi no podemos alquilar con ellos, no podemos viajar con ellos, y la vida es cada vez más dificil con ellos. En el camino descubrimos que la mayoría de los perros y gatos no viven en hogares sino que viven en las calles y nunca llegan a tener una casa. Y aprendimos sobre sobrepoblación de perros y gatos y como es un rol y deber del Estado controlarla con castraciones y casi no lo hace. Y vimos la consecuencia que son los refugios donde cada vez están peor, generalmente nunca salen y aprendimos que no debieran existir porque ninguno debería nacer para no tener familia. Nos llegaron muchísimos casos y casos de abusos y maltratos para que ayudasemos a difundir. Y nuestra mirada ya no estuvo puesta solo en los perros y gatos sino en cada animal que es considerado cosa, cada animal que es obligado a dar vueltas en un acuario, cada animal que es encerrado por complacer al humano para que lo vaya a ver un ratito, cada caballo que es apaleado, matado a revencazos, que tira de un carro, cada yegua que es sangrada, todo el sufrimiento de los animales industria cárnica y láctea y podríamos seguir con una lista eterna e interminable de cosas Hoy conocemos el poder de las redes, y sabemos que si nos unimos, podemos terminar con todo esto y cambiarlo. Ban #publicaquariums & Marine Mammal Shows World-wide Pt 187: As previously detailed, the predominant theory as to why Chondrichthyes have lower genetic diversity than other fish is tied to each of the 5 know past mass extinction events. As previously stated, sharks, rays & other such boneless fish go back a full 450m years Just 7m years later came the late Ordovician Silurian extinction event wiping 49–60% of marine life. Next came the Devonian extinction 359m years ago, killing off Overall, 19% of all taxonomic families & 50% of all genera & 70-80% of all life. 252 million years ago, came the 'Great Dying', the biggest ever extinction event, at the Permian–Triassic boundary killed off 97% of all life on earth: 57% of biological families, 83% of genera & 81% of ocean species. Just 49m years later Triassic Jurassic extinction event, 76% of species & wiping out 20% of all families. This event hit the land, harder than the sea but 23–34% of marine genera were still lost. Then 135m or so later came the KT extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous, 66m years ago, killing off the non avian dinosaurs. 80% of species were lost. Though many lineages would survived, significant numbers of Cartilaginous fish died & each time, their genetic variability plummeted. Corals go back 535m years & the 1st cepholpods, nautilus like Tannuella appeared 522m years ago. Both have also declined during but survived 5 mass extinctions, but overtime regenerated their diversity, though the genetic variabllity of coral especially is now a Holocene extinction concern. (Tardigrades went through all 5 events too but were never close to threatened by any of them!) Why have sharks been slower at establishing renewed gene diversication? A study on least concern listed, Australian epaulette sharks, also known as walking sharks by Manfred Schartl show that DNA mutation rates were the lowest ever recorded in any vertebrate, at just 7×10-10 per base pair per generation. This would explain why their gene diversity has taken so long to rejuvenate. It takes Chondrichthyes 10 to 20x's longer to diversify than any mammal species. 🇺🇸 Few days ago, in Australia, around 160 pilot whalea stranded. Many organizations included the team of Perth Zoo were on site. More than 100 cetaceans were released successfully. On April 26th, a baby pilot whale was discovered in compromised condition and was likely a orphan of the stranding event. Sadly the vet had to euthanize the baby. If there is one thing that can be said about Walt Disney the man, he was a visionary. Many animals are portrayed through Walt Disney’s magic screen — “Bambi”, “Dumbo”, “Lady and the Tramp”, “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”, and even modern films like “Finding Nemo” and “Finding Dory.” And the irony of these films rests in the same underlying theme- all of them feature animals who in some form, encounter the worst of humanity. Which is why we don’t understand why "The Seas with Nemo and Friends" in Epcot continues to keep captive dolphins when public support for keeping cetaceans in captivity, is rapidly waning. Custom whale necklace. This whale is Hugo. This sweet bull was one of the only other whales that was held captive at Miami Seaquarium. Hugo sadly passed away after a self inflicted brain aneurysm, leaving his tank mate Tokitae alone. This necklace was a perfect way to remember Hugo’s beauty. 🇺🇸 At Geoje Sea World in South Korea, two bottlenose dolphins passed away in February. The facility is now charged for violating the Zoo and Aquarium Management Act. The dolphins were Zulai and Nova. A inspection was done after their deaths and concluded that some parameters must be fixed: water temperature, diet, hygiene and injured individuals management. 🇫🇷 Au Geoje Sea World, en Corée du Sud, deux grands dauphins sont décédés en février. 🇺🇸 Another rescue attempt for Little Brave Hunter. Volunteers tried to guide the calf out of the lagoon with seal meat. Sadly she refused to go under the bridge but she consumed all food. Few hours later with the help of high tide she finally escaped on her own. She spent 34 days in this lagoon. But she is only 2 years old and alone. Her family wasn’t seen in 2/3 weeks and there is no orca in the area. 🇫🇷 Une autre tentative de sauvetage pour Little Brave Hunter. Les volontaires ont essayé de guider le petit hors de la lagune avec de la viande de phoque. Malheureusement, elle a refusé d’aller sous le pont, mais elle a consommé toute la nourriture. It´s not the tapas or the warm Spanish sun that draws me back to the Strait of Gibraltar every spring (although I definitely enjoy those perks ☀️🤤) More than anything, it’s the pilot whales that have become such an integral part of why I pack up my gear and head south each year... I first came to Gibraltar about 3 years ago. That first trip out on the water, seeing that first glimpse of the pilot whales, was all it took. I was hooked. They're incredible creatures - huge yet so graceful, curious about the boat and my camera. Returning each year feels like catching up with old friends. You get out on the boat, feel the familiar splash of the waves, and there's this mix of excitement and a bit of worry. What if they don’t show? What if they do and something’s not right? Seeing that first dorsal fin break the surface, is a rush of relief and happiness every time. These trips have taught me a lot about the challenges these whales face. The Strait is a busy spot, and every year, it feels like the traffic is heavier, the risks greater from pollution and climate shifts. It’s tough to see, but it drives me to keep coming back, to keep documenting and sharing these stories. I want my photos to do more than just showcase the beauty of the pilot whales.
