BREAKING: Two orcas injured during transfer in Japan. • These two photos show Lovey, a 26 year old female orca, with a deep gash on her lower chin allegedly following a chaotic transfer procedure at Kamogawa SeaWorld, Japan. Her 23 year old sister Lara is also said to be injured but to a lesser degree. • The injury apparently occurred on April 24th when 18 year old female orca Ran 2, Lovey & Lara’s younger sister, was moved from Kamogawa to Kobe Suma SeaWorld, set to formally open in June. • Both parks are owned by the Granvista Group. The time between the final decision to move the orca & the crane arriving, was said to be only 1 hour. Allegedly, this meant that the orcas were not able to be separated before the crane was moved into place in the medical pool. The commotion & sight of the crane triggered the orcas to panic. • Whilst the exact cause of Lovey’s injury is not immediately clear, the appearance is consistent with a collision with a hard surface such as the tank walls. In 2012, SeaWorld San Diego’s male orca Nakai (now deceased) suffered a similar yet much more drastic and deep wound allegedly from a collision with the tank wall/ tank gate whilst escaping conflict. • Forced transfers & separations in the captivity industry are common & usually performed purely for business interests, in this case the Granvista Group wanted 2 orcas to perform at their new park. At Kobe, following her own separation from her daughter & grandson, 36 year old female orca Stella was subjected to 25 days in total isolation before the arrival of Ran. Rescue of a Newborn Beluga Whale in the St. Lawrence Estuary, Quebec, Canada 🇺🇸 An orphaned newborn beluga whale was rescued and maintained in a pinniped medical pool for 10 days. The animal was tube fed with a highly energetic artificial milk formula, and received antibiotics as prophylaxis. The animal had never nursed. The necropsy showed neonatal pulmonary atelectasis, a condition not previously reported in a cetacean that could explain the observed listing. 🇫🇷 Un béluga orphelin nouveau-né a été sauvé et maintenu dans une piscine médicale à pinnipèdes pendant 10 jours. Treatment of a Live Stranded Young Risso’s Dolphin (Grampus griseus) 🇺🇸 On April 24, 1993, a live stranded Risso’s dolphin was brought to Sea World of Texas. The animal was a 2 to 3 week old. The dolphin arrived in poor condition suffering from multiple lacerations, a wound on the dorsal fin, and a lesion on the abdomen. The animal had signs of pneumonia. Antibiotic and antifungal therapy was initiated. A milk formula was provided initially via stomach tube until the dolphin learned to nurse efficiently from a bottle. As of January 14, 1994, the dolphin was 167.5 cm in length, weighed 81 kg, and appeared in good health. 🇫🇷 Le 24 avril 1993, un dauphin de Risso nouveau né échoué a été amené à Sea World Texas. They’re viewed as objects and property who don’t feel pain- which is why SeaQuest and places like them think it’s okay to starve them (so they’ll interact more with the paying guests.) As the whistleblowers in the latest investigation describe, SeaQuest takes advantage of these loopholes to continue making money off the literal backs of suffering and dying animals while both lying to children, and also putting them in dangerous situations. ▪️Why is SeaQuest LV still in business? Loopholes, and because they bring business to a “dying mall”, The Boulevard. Doing these protest for years and talking to actual locals in the area, many don’t support this place- but such as many other places in Vegas, tourists often patronize what they want to believe is a “fun experience.” If it makes money in Vegas, a business can and will stay open despite who is harmed in the process- unless the people don’t stop pushing for change. ▪️What can we do? For comparison, the illegally sized tank Tokitae used to occupy alone (except for several dolphin companions) at Miami Seaquarium was 80 foot long and 20 feet deep. It’s not surprising then that 4 orcas trapped in such a tiny tank with little room to manoeuvre, may have, in a state of confusion and panic, collided with each other and/or the tank surfaces. Absolutely NOTHING has been started on Kshamenk’s sea pen. No site has been selected, no blueprints, no concept art, no funding has been secured, no materials have been ordered, not a single thing has been built, no permits and so much more. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. If Kshamenk is not moved to another killer whale facility, he WILL die at Mundo Marino. He will end up like Tokitae and Kiska. Dying alone in an outdated facility, waiting for a sanctuary that will NEVER be built. History will repeat itself. Kshamenk will NEVER see a sea pen in his native waters, it will never be built. He’s past the average life expectancy for a male killer whale, and likely doesn’t have much time left. Not to mention he will still be isolated from his species even IF a hypothetical sea pen is built. His only chance at NOT dying alone at Mundo Marino is being transferred to another facility with killer whales, such at SeaWorld San Antonio or Port of Nagoya Aquarium. I do not support these facilities, but they will be able to provide Kshamenk with better care, larger tanks and most importantly, companionship with other killer whales. Kshamenk shouldn’t die alone. SLA, age 33, 262cm, 202kg, has been kept by our laboratory since 1967. In 1979 she produced and reared a calf which was weaned in 1981. In October, 1992, SLA was placed with an unrelated 6-month-old, 46kg calf that had been attempted to nurse on SLA despite being fed formula six times each day. TOD, age 36, 268cm, 205kg, has been with our laboratory since 1968. She never calved and pregnancy has never been detected. TOD began lactating soon after being placed with the 73kg orphan. 🇫🇷 Deux dauphins femelles non lactantes, non gestantes, ont commencé à allaiter en une semaine après avoir été mis avec des orphelins. 🇺🇸 Few days ago, in Australia, around 160 pilot whalea stranded. Many organizations included the team of Perth Zoo were on site. More than 100 cetaceans were released successfully. On April 26th, a baby pilot whale was discovered in compromised condition and was likely a orphan of the stranding event. Sadly the vet had to euthanize the baby. In this tragic event 28 pilot whales died plus this baby. 🇫🇷 Il y a quelques jours, en Australie, environ 160 globicéphales se sont échouées. 🇺🇸 Another rescue attempt for Little Brave Hunter. Volunteers tried to guide the calf out of the lagoon with seal meat. Sadly she refused to go under the bridge but she consumed all food. Few hours later with the help of high tide she finally escaped on her own. She spent 34 days in this lagoon. But she is only 2 years old and alone. No-one knows this better than captive cetaceans who swim in circles day after day. Every time someone purchases a ticket to see a dolphin in captivity, they are supporting this industry and keeping them captive. The solution is easy. We're not asking you to do anything. We're asking you to NOT do something...don't buy a ticket to see captive dolphins.

For marine sediments: 4 to 568 mg/kg for arsenic, and <5 to 7 430 µg/kg for mercury. Fishing for bivalve molluscs has been prohibited in the area since 2019. Another orca pod separation in Japan On 24th April, 18 year old female orca Ran 2 was moved from Kamogawa SeaWorld to Kobe Suma SeaWorld, set to formally open in June. Both parks are owned by the Granvista Group. It was believed that some of Marineland Antibes’ orcas would be sent to Kobe as well, following plans for them to be acquired by the Granvista Group. However their move from France to Japan has been temporarily blocked and the Granvista Group is said to no longer be interested in them. Ran joins her mother, Stella, a 36 year old female orca who was moved to Kobe from Port of Nagoya Aquarium on 29th March, leaving behind her 11 yr old calf Lynn and 15 yr old grandchild Earth. Following the forced separation from her youngest daughter, Stella was captured on video (slide 2) calling out in apparent distress. This move meant that Stella had now undergone separation from all 4 of her living calves. Stella suffered 25 days in total isolation from her own kind. In drone footage posted on 16th April by Life Investigation Agency, Stella was seen listlessly logging alone with no trainers or enrichment visible in one of the small pools she now inhabits. It is alleged that during her isolation Stella has been refusing food and hitting her head on the tank walls. Its a relief that Stella is no longer alone and has been reunited with her daughter Ran with whom she was separated from almost a decade ago. However, this also sadly means that Ran leaves behind her sisters Lovey and Lara, and her niece Luna. Whilst wild orcas can choose whether to stay with their maternal pod or to disperse, in captivity orcas have no such privilege; there have been numerous documented cases of distressing and traumatic separations. Right to family and freedom to choose who they associate with, does not exist for animals considered an entertainment asset, and whose lives are entirely subject to the whim of corporate interests. BREAKING- Miami Seaquarium eviction Miami Dade County (MDC) have officially served the Miami Seaquarium (MSQ), subsidy of parent company The Dolphin Company (TDC), with an eviction notice. MSQ is required to vacate the land ASAP, failure to do so will result in the case being escalated to a court of law. Their animals will likely either be relocated to other TDC parks or sold/loaned to other facilities. This decision comes after months of public fighting between MSQ and MDC. In March, MDC issued a notice of intent to terminate the lease in the wake of repeated failed USDA inspections dating back months that cite numerous welfare issues including: inadequate veterinary care, animals exposed to rusting, crumbling, and filthy enclosures, animals left without access to clean water or shelter from the sun; and numerous incidents of avoidable injuries such as broken bones from intra species aggression, and ingestion of foreign objects including nails and zip ties. In the January 2024 inspection, MSQ were deliberately obstructive to inspectors, initially refusing to allow them onto the premises and to review documentation, as a result the inspection was delayed by over 4 hours. MSQ staff had been advised to film the inspection process and that staff shouldn’t speak to officials alone. Staff confided in the inspectors that they felt they could not be fully truthful whilst being filmed. The inspection found the veterinary function woefully understaffed and lacking necessary equipment, such that animals in critical condition were not able to be treated. Sea lion Sushi was in a critical state after suffering weight loss, cataracts, and lung disease. Another sea lion, Bud, was also found to be critically unwell with kidney failure. He died shortly after the inspection. Dolphins Aries and Bimini were in poor health, with Aries looking visibly thin with a prominent spine and peanut head due to health issues related to excessive regurgitation. 3 macaws were assessed to be suffering from psychological distress, and the bird enclosures had poor air quality and a “noxious odor”. Since the inspection, MSQ has rehomed 4 parrots to the peaceable primate sanctuary. • 📸MSQ

NANDU foi capturado nas águas geladas da Islândia no dia 14 de Novembro 1983 com 3 anos de idade e morreu prematuramente num país tropical após ter comido parte do seu tanque e lixo dos próprios clientes. Muitas pessoas questionam hoje em dia, o porquê dos delfinários em Portugal não estarem abrangidos pela lei nacional de proteção de animais selvagens usados em Circo e estarem sobre a alçada da lei dos espaços zoológicos? A resposta é simples. Porque a quando da entrada desta indústria circense em Portugal, entraram pelo Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa. Na altura pela mão do sócio e empresário Português, Arlindo Ferreira que atualmente já não é sócio do zoomarine. The facility wants to collaborate with Chimelong to send temporarily the females to learn maternal skills. Also as Chimelong said no to Moskvarium for the transfer of Naja, Shanghai is trying to convince the russian facility. Naja is currently on antibiotics and isn’t doing well alone. Kiska’s calves . . . Kiska’s calf (1992) Kiska’s first calf was born on August 24, 1992. Unfortunately this little male only lived 2 months before passing away on October 25, 1992 due to drowning. Kanuck (1994) Kanuck was born on August 28, 1994. When Kanuck was just 10 months old he was separated from his mother and moved to the infamous “warehouse” where he stayed until his death around Spring of 1998 at around 3 years old. He passed away due to traumatic shock. Nova (1996) Nova was born on November 6, 1996. When Nova was just 7 months old, he was separated from his mother and sent to the warehouse. In 1998 Nova was moved to the newly constructed Friendship Cove and was reunited with Kiska, but this reunion was short lived and he was sent to King Waldorf stadium to preform. On August 20,2001 Nova passed away from pneumonia and starvation at 4 years old. Hudson (1998) Hudson was born on September 15, 1998. When Hudson was around 4 years old, he was separated from Kiska and sent to King Waldorf stadium. Eventually Hudson was moved back to Friendship Cove and reunited with his mother. On October 20, 2004 Hudson passed away from Lymphoasmacytic Leptomeningitis at 6 years old. He was Kiska’s longest surviving calf. Athena (2004) Athena was born on August 8, 2004. She passed away on May 24, 2009 from an unspecified infection at 4 years old. Athena was Kiska’s only daughter and the last captive killer whale to be born in Canada. All of Kiska’s calves were born at Marineland Canada and sired by Kandu 7. Kiska outlived every single one of her calves and suffered horribly at the hands of Marineland. Living out the last years of her life completely isolated. She outlived almost every single whale she met in captivity. Only two whales that have lived at Marineland are still alive, Ikaika and Katina. É uma mudança de modelo de exploração circense em delfinário para um modelo de reabilitação em Santuário na natureza onde podem sentir os ritmos das marés e das ondas e ter muitos estímulos naturais da biodiversidade marinha de baixo de água e manter os mesmos cuidados médico veterinários de sempre com os mesmos cuidados de sempre mas sem circo, sem música alta, sem interações forçadas com estranhos, sem paredes de cimento pintadas de azul num ambiente estéril. Em Portugal temos 35 golfinhos vítimas de exploração circense em 2 delfinário (8 no Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa e 27 no Zoomarine no Algarve). Destes 35 golfinhos, 31 já nasceram em cativeiro mas ao contrário do que esta indústria que tenta resistir à mudança diz. Todos são fortes candidatos a serem reabilitados em Santuário na natureza. Só num Santuário na natureza estes golfinhos podem ter uma vida mais digna e natural. A situação que queremos construir em conjunto com as empresas, universidades e o estado português/Europa, é uma situação em que todos ganham, especialmente o bem estar dos animais e os seus interesses naturais que passam a estar no centro da questão e não como um objeto de mero lucro como até então acontece em Portugal. No caso do zoomarine que tem um projeto antigo de construir um hotel e se transformar num Resort fará todo o sentido ter uma nova imagem onde deve aproveitar as novas tecnologias para transmitir em direto os processos de reabilitação em tempo real do Santuário na natureza onde a presença humana será restrita aos técnicos de Reabilitação da vida selvagem sempre com o objetivo final da libertação total quando o é possível e quando não o é proporcionar uma vida o mais natural e digna possível. 🇺🇸 A study done with 24 orcas at Loro Parque, SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Diego is focusing on killer whale personalities. To study the structure of personality of this species, researchers use a questionary with 58 trainers and 38 objectives. As the median of time of trainers spent with orcas was 8 years they can easily identify each personality at the contrary of wild ones who are observed at the surface but not regularly. In December, Juliet was transferred to ZooTampa to receive an urgent medical evaluation at the David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center, one of only four critical centers in the US for the advanced care of critically injured, sick and orphaned manatees. “For more than four months, Juliet had successfully adapted to her new environment in the Zoo’s rehabilitation pools and was socializing with other manatees,” stated Dr. Cynthia Stringfield, ZooTampa’s senior vice president of animal health, conservation, and education. “When she arrived at the zoo there were many aspects of her overall health that were unknown. She was an unusually large animal, weighing 3,045 pounds and her age was estimated at over 65 years old, making her one of the oldest known manatees.” Over the past week, Juliet was undergoing a routine medical assessment where she exhibited health issues likely related to her advanced age. She declined suddenly overnight, and sadly passed away early this morning. A necropsy will be performed. “Juliet was a beloved animal, who captured the hearts of many worldwide. We would be contacted frequently by animal care professionals, veterinarians and even the general public who credit her for instilling their passion for these gentle sea cows. After noticing that, they tried to feed her with seal meat. She ate all 18 kilos of it.
