Even if there is ongoing discontent with what's happening around us abroad with the tragic and heartbreaking goings-on in Gaza and our nation, we need some sort of comfort to let us know that there's still hope for everyone. This here is my tribute to cap off #nationaldolphinday which is a special dolphin collab between @seaworld's #coralthedolphin from #shamuandcrew/ #shamuandfriends and @millerchildrens's #milliethedolphin in honor of #seaworld60. After finishing it, I couldn't help but think, what happens if #millie and #coral do somehow meet for the first time? Of course, it's all just up to imagination since I don't know how it'll go down but it doesn't hurt to think about it. But, what is it about #dolphins of all shapes and sizes (yes, orcas count, don't deny that) that makes them so cool, so awesome, adorable, cute, and something of a friend for life after an encounter with one at someplace like @seaworldorlando or Discovery Cove (which I'm still hoping to return to at some point)? I'd say that it's their intellect, their beauty, their sheer power, the speed they get up to, the way they bond with humans as was the case with their animal trainer friends who love and care for them at places such as the SeaWorld parks, many things that could answer that. And, what's more, what they represent whenever they're in their element shows us how magnificent our oceans are and how precious marine life is even though there is more to it than the dolphins alone. Of course, we can't forget about one dolphin helping to contribute to a cause that is just as important as preserving and protecting marine life. Over on the west coast, @millerchildrens has a #dolphinmascot lovingly named #millie and she was a joy to behold for many people who get to meet her be they patients (young patients brought to Miller Children's Hospital for cures for difficult and/or life-threatening medical conditions) or workers who worked with her and experience the happiness she brings whenever she comes to play. As today was #nationaldolphinday, she would pay an annual visit each year to @aquariumpacific for a medical checkup to see if she's still in good health and after seeing how she was doing via a reel, she's in perfect health as always. She's just as much a sweetheart as Coral was (especially since Miller Children's has a baby dolphin mascot on them which also makes her a mother) and I hope to see her one day so I can experience how she gets about her days and life at MCH as a dolphin nurse. On 1 July 2022 at the Marine Science Symposium at Plett Ocean Festival, vet and marine mammal scientist, Dr Alejandra Vargas-Fonseca presents everybody’s favourite oceanic mammal and everyone's favourite destination with "Bottlenose Dolphins on the Garden Route." Small pods of the dolphins pass the Beacon Island Lifestyle Resort where the symposium is being held, so regularly that staff joke that the dolphins are on a hotel schedule! 🐬🐬🐬 However popular, much has remained unknown about their status and ecology of our Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins and the IUCN Red List considers them a “data deficient” species. This, and the possible plans to revise marine protected areas, is why the bottlenose dolphins became a focus of Vargas-Fonseca’s PhD research for several years. Eefje didn't know where she would like to spend her birthday... Yes she is a real libra ♎ After we visited two other places we found this lovely spot in a small village. We went for a walk with the fam and saw a sign that said that you could spot wild dolphins!! So Eefje wishes (ofcourse) that they will visit on her birthday.... We enjoyed the sea view en when we where back home we saw a couple of wild dolphines very close to us!!! OMG this was the best end of Eefje's 26th birthyear ever!!! She never saw wild dolphins, so this was a dream come true for her. Unfortunately the night was more like a nightmare... Besides horror and thrillers, I love me some good sci-fi! Star Trek, Babylon 5, STARGATE SG-1, and Red Dwarf were some series I grew up watching as a kid and still enjoy as an adult. I didn’t read much sci-fi though until more recently. This book in particular was one of the first amazing sci-fi books I picked up and read on a high recommendation from papa footnotes @torchvert It’s part of David Brin’s larger Uplift Universe series but it can be read well as a standalone book (which I did). To give a quick overview, the year is 2489, and you follow the crew of a ship called Streaker which is comprised of seven humans, 150 uplifted dolphins (dolphins that can communicate via telepathy), and one uplifted chimpanzee. They discover a derelict fleet of ships that appear to be remnants of the Progenitors who were believed to be the race who originally lifted up all the other species. After notifying Earth of their discovery, they are ordered to go into hiding and things only escalate from there as tensions among the crew begin to brew and the situation at large seems destined to turn into an interstellar crisis. What made it an absolutely delightful read other than the fun plot elements and story itself is that it served as a huge inspiration for later shows and games like Babylon 5 and Mass Effect. So if you have any familiarity with those franchises, you’re likely to be making connections and finding little tidbits all over the place that are familiar. I definitely want to read more from this series. I think this book did an amazing job of exploring race issues through the species aspect of the story. It was a great element of the plot. It doesn’t try to sugar coat it. It makes it uncomfortable and I think that’s part of what makes it so interesting. I also loved seeing how this book from 1983 (and the series as a whole) played a role in inspiring so many little things that came after it. Did you know calves can spend up to 6 years with their moms? Mama dolphins teach their young ones to hunt and how to protect themselves, and if mom is a strand feeder, she'll teach that as well. Dolphins will nurse their calves for 2-3 years although it has been documented up to 10 years! Kai is just 2 years old and although we often see them swimming together, at times Kia will split off from KoKo (mom) and cruise around the inlet, sometimes playing with birds.
