Before having a kid, our travels revolved around couple friendly escapes. When Levi came to our lives, we now try to insert kid friendly days to our itinerary, while not making our trip too kid-centric. 16/04/2023: We visited the #DMZ, the zone dividing South Korea from North Korea. It was a very interesting experience, especially when we descended into the third tunnel (no photos allowed). This tunnel was started by North Korean soldiers before being discovered in 1978, intended for a secret attack on Seoul. During our visit, we also went to the Dora observatory to peek into North Korea (first and fifth pic!).

My most memorable tour of my Seoul trip ,DMZ tour! The views from Dora observatory are amazing. From here I can see Kaesong and the propaganda village at North Korea. Also, the third tunnel in South Korea. I managed to walk through the third tunnel. The tunnel is 73 m deep. Total 1635 m long. We can only walk 258 m steep down before reaching the Military demarcation line. The inner tunnel is about 2 m tall only so those who are too tall are rather tough but not to worry, we are provided with a safety helmet. The DMZ tour has been the most interesting organised tour I think I’ve ever been on. The history and significance is incredible. From the Dora Observatory we could clearly see into North Korea. The tour ended with visiting the 3rd tunnel that North Korea dug to try and invade Seoul, unfortunately photographs are not allowed. After an immersive first day in Seoul, our journey led us to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a swath of land that embodies the stark division and the lingering hope for unity between North and South Korea. 🕊️🇰🇷 Regrettably, we couldn't access the Joint Security Area (JSA), the iconic military frontier etched in our minds since the historic Trump-Kim summit. A year ago, an American soldier's defection to North Korea during a tour similar to ours escalated into a diplomatic crisis, rendering the JSA off-limits ever since. 🤝💬 Nevertheless, we seized the opportunity to visit the Dorasan Observatory. Peering through telescopes, we observed North Korean farmers tending to their fields, a universal scene of agriculture that knows no borders. 🌐 Delving into the Third Infiltration Tunnel, discovered in 1978, we traversed one of the many secret passages North Korea engineered for a potential invasion. Thankfully, it was intercepted in time and never served its intended purpose. 🚧👀 To my surprise, the Korean concept of nationhood differs from ours. Here, 'Korea' is defined by its people, fostering a sentiment that North and South Korea are fragments of a single nation, yearning for eventual reunification. This perspective was eye-opening, highlighting the injustice of a boundary drawn 70 years ago that continues to divide hearts and souls. I remain hopeful for a harmonious resolution. Our visit to the DMZ was a poignant reflection on the delicate balance of peace and the enduring spirit of hope. Tag 19: Wie sieht Nordkorea aus? Seit heute wissen wir es, zumindest kennen wir einen Teil. Vom Dora-Observatorium, rund 40 Kilometer nördlich von Seoul, kann man über die Grenze schauen. Und was sieht man da? Den ehemals größten Fahnenmast der Welt, der eine gigantische nordkoreanische Flagge trägt. Felder, Wiesen und verstreute Siedlungen, in der Ferne die Großstadt Kaesong. Und all das wirkt irgendwie grau, trist und öde, was aber auch am noch nicht begonnen Frühling liegen mag. Ein Schritt zurück: Nord- und Südkorea sind formal noch immer im Krieg. Es herrscht Waffenstillstand. Damit es nicht zu Konflikten kommt, gibt es beidseits der Demarkationslinie (Frontverlauf) eine jeweils zwei Kilometer breite Demilitarisierte Zone (DMZ). Die kann man besuchen, allerdings nur im Rahmen einer geführten Tour für rund 60 Euro. Unsere Tour startet um halb acht. Erster Punkt ist Imjingak, eine Art Touristenzentrum rund um die DMZ. Man sieht Gedenkstätten, eine zerschossene Dampflok, eine alte Brücke, über die Kriegsgefangene ausgetauscht wurden, kann per Seilbahn den Fluss überqueren und in der Bowlinghalle eines alten US-Camps eine Ausstellung über den Koreakrieg sehen. Das alles noch vor der DMZ. In die geht es dann über einen militärischen Checkpoint und nach einer Passkontrolle. Das dauert. Die Militärpolizei schaut, wer rein und raus fährt. In der Zone besuchen wir zunächst einen Tunnel, den Nordkorea in den Süden gegraben haben soll, um einen Angriff vorzubereiten. Er wurde entdeckt. Aber natürlich ist das Observatorium der interessantere Ort, weil man eben nach Nordkorea schauen kann. Das Observatorium liegt etwa einen Kilometer von der Demarkationslinie entfernt. Die Demilitarisierte Zone ist nicht weiter auffällig und zumeist nur als grüner Streifen auszumachen. Deutlich sichtbar ist aber die südliche und nördliche Befestigung mit Stacheldraht und Wachtürmen. Von der Ruhe darf man sich nicht täuschen lassen: Die Demilitarisierte Zone ist stark vermint, wie unsere Führerin erzählt. Schon auf dem Weg zum Observatorium sind überall Warnschilder zu sehen. 오늘은 남쪽의 최북단 전망대 ’도라전망대‘ 를 소개합니다! 물론! 저희 BORA 가 여기에! 또 설치되어 있단 말씀.. 하려하는데 눈치채셧나요!!😆 혹시 파주,도라전망대에 방문해보신분있나요?🔭 왠지 DMZ 투어 하시면서 방문하신 분들이 의외로 많을 것 같습니다..에헴 👀🫶👀 여기서 도라전망대란? 군사분계선으로부터 1.5km 떨어진 해발 167m의 도라산 정상에 위치하고 있으며 1987년 1월 개방전까지는 비무장지대여서 출입이 불가능하였다고 합니다. 2018년까지 30년간 사용된 옛 도라전망대는 시설노후화로 인해 일반 관람을 중단하고 신도라전망대를 이용하게 되었습니다. 2018년 10월 22일에 지상 3층 규모로 건립하였으며 전망대에 올라서면 DMZ와 개성동단, 개성시가지 뿐만 아니라 북한선전마을,송악산이 한눈에 들어오는 경관을 볼 수 있습니다. We then moved on to the #thirdtunnel and got to actually go down into the tunnel to the 3rd blast wall that separates South Korea from North Korea. After that, we went to #doraobservatory and got more history on the DMZ as well as a little information about life in North Korea and then we got to actually peer into NK. It was such a weird experience seeing people going about their normal lives over in North Korea, a totalitarian hereditary dictatorship, probably completely unaware they were being observed by some random dude from America… I ended the tour with an optional add-on at #majanghosulake and the incredible suspension bridge and views there. Over all, a really fun and informative day. :)

One of the most surreal experiences I’ve had was taking a tour of the DMZ. We were able to view North Korea from the Dora Observatory. On clear days, and with the help of binoculars, you can see North Koreans walking or cycling around. North and South Korean villages in the DMZ area. Do you know that there's people living village in the DMZ area? Daesung -dong In South DMZ around 200people are actually living there.
