We didn’t chat much but their passion for this generation of cars resonates with me because it’s my favorite generation of JDM VIP style cars as well. Built to recapture the VIP style of the late 80s and early 90s that made Daikoku PA famous. Literally the automotive equivalent of Tokyo citypop. While walking through this year we came across this very rare, very clean, very old school Toyota Corona. Yes. Corona. This is the first Mark 2 Corona I’ve seen in real life. They’re crazy rare. While taking photos of it, the man who owns it rocked up and so naturally, we got to chatting, and I had to get him on the project. What makes his ride so special though isn’t the fact that it’s rare or that he has kept it in such good condition. But that it’s rare, in good condition, and it’s still a drift car. Yes. He puts it sideways on circuits!Regularly. That’s some next level crazy. And some next level passion. And it’s exactly the reason why this project exists. To showcase the beautiful madness that drives amazing cars like this one. I’m super stoked to have seen this. Even more so to have met the man behind it. Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show. パシフィコ横浜 Pacifico Yokohama 🚘： @takeshiiitsuka The @passion_s51 booth was where Ai (@ai_0425_ ) was working at last year’s Yokohama Hot Rod & Customer show and when we meet, we shoot. In the process of that though I connected with both the owner of the shop which is an Iwate based company that makes these insanely technical, custom built hot rods for customers that actually drive them, and the owner of one of the pickups on show in the booth. Every single part of this vehicle has been worked. Top, bottom, inside and out. One suspension. V8 swap. Even the interior roof. Not a single part hasn’t been customized, and every single customization was chosen and specified by the owner. What makes it even crazier is that it is a fully street legal build. That’s one of the biggest factors of all the customers of Passion require from their builds. They are absolutely show cars. But they are show cars that the owners drive, if not daily, then regularly. And like the name of the shop that builds them. They are all products of their owner’s passion. If there is something that looks terribllybout of place in a clean and flat parking lot is a real, rough, Gunma drift car. This black beat-up S chassis missile, properly pulled on my heartstrings. I was only about 3 or 4 years older than he was when I used to drive my black S14 sideways on the same roads he does. He is a good deal better at it than I was though. But seeing that well used patchwork of FRP and quick fixes. Combining the best of Dressup, Decotora, Sotomuki Audio and even a bit of Itasha long before those things ever existed. Proof that pimping rides and showing them off in public have been a part of Japanese culture for as long as there have been rides to pimp. This particular Dashi is from my original hood, in my Japanese Hometown, Shimogo. While it’s pulled by the whole community, it is steered and controlled (ie. driven) by these 4 badasses. They also maintain it, customize it and keep it in good condition in the time between festivals. Two of them are actually some of the original craftsmen who helped build it.
