I would like this to be amygdoloidal basalt….it looks like the picture in the Pebble Spotters Guide, feels light, and isn’t limestone (no reaction to vinegar.). But I suppose it could also be a mud or siltstone with quartz bits? In between the sleet showers and the freezing wind, here’s what I managed to find on the beach yesterday: 1. The beautifully delicate traces of a brachiopod fossil. If anyone can ID a species/family, I’d love to know. 2. A fabulous chunk of crinoids. 3. A very lovely berry-shaded granite/diorite rock. 4. Gorgeous coral limestones. The fossils are probably all from the Lower Carboniferous/Mississippian period, so about 300 Mya. None are particularly rare or unusual, but I just can’t get over how they are still here, sitting quietly under the sea wall. Early Purple Orchids. What a beautiful plant and what a let down of a name 💜
Maceron Alexanders have been cultivated from the 1st century onwards. It has a solid, furrowed stem, hollow with age. Damp places, often near the sea. Flowers The flowers are yellow-green in dense, rounded umbels of 7-15 rays. Leaves Trifoliate. Three oval-to-diamond shaped, serrated leaflets, shiny. Fruits Seeds Berry: black, stalked, in a round, open cluster. Edible Leaves, stem, shoots and upper root: best eaten blanched, having a flavour between celery and parsley. Flower buds: in salads.

Anyone want to play ‘Animal, Vegetable or Mineral’? I found this little thing at the beach and have no idea what it is (or was). Looks a bit like a slug turned to stone. The underside is slightly concave, and has shiny patches like a shell interior, but it feels solid, albeit very light, with what looks like sandstone holding it together. We usually get Carboniferous rocks here.
