Trying out Scotch darning today for my daughter's sports socks. This ladder is down to the velcro on her shin pads. It's similar to blanket stitch combined with weaving. Quite impressed with results! Assisted by @ministryofmending Lovely darning disc which really helps maintain an even distribution of tension. Navigating the hole will be interesting! My recent tip from my denim upcyclers Facebook group is to use a sharp blade to remove denim pockets and belt loops. It worked really well, except you lose the stitching. I used an eyebrow blade I bought from Tk Maxx. A friend mentioned her grandchildren are surgeons so she uses surgical blades for this! Not sure I would but my grandmother said a blunt knife is more dangerous than a sharp one so I guess the sharper the better for this job! #denimupcycle #denim #jeansupcycling #EalingRepairCafe

Next banner being put together for @puzzled_by_plastic Recycling challenge at Acton @marketw3. Using the seam offcuts from our draft excluder project and an old table cloth. Idea is this can be used as an event table cloth or hung up so has the flexibility. Like all creative processes, this has taken a lot of thought and mulling over (and a little procrastination!) The first version was planned on a bed sheet but just was too thin with the chunky denim seams and I could see wouldn't hang well! Fingers crossed this one will! We are looking for people who are interested in repairing clothes as part of being a sustainable consumer. At the session you will evaluate the effectiveness of a repair toolkit, by interacting with a deck of cards that reveal the core features of a clothing repair process and break it down into a series of steps. Thank you to all of you who supported us in 2023. We started counting in January 2023 on what we teach and advise on mending, altering and upcycling and results are in. For 2023: 🌟 267 items saved from going to waste, plus all the water and carbon savings from not buying new over. 🌟 We spoke to 378 people to inspire them to take care of the clothes and more. We achieved this by attending 49 events at 15 locations. So a big thank you to those who came along and mended, shared their mends. To those that donated money, time and space last year. This wasn't an easy mend but it was worth it! This jacket came to me for the refugee project that we at #EalingRepairCafe mend for. The hood, collar and inner had come unstitched, so there were several layers to sew back. I find the best way to tackle.these is to secure middle layers together and then use ladder stitch to hide the mend at the seams. It took time but the end result is a jacket that is wearable and hopefully strong enough to last a few years. #ladderstitch #mendingisbetterthanending #mending #stitchitdontditchit

Went to University West London to do their podcast on climate change, sustainability and biodiversity with the brilliant @thatvetsean who talked about the reintroduction of Beevers in Ealing. I talked about #EalingRepairCafe and #ReduceandRecycleHub at @marketw3 It also gave me a chance to do research on the global impact of fashion. Can you believe it uses 10 percent of global emissions? The global impact of fashion and textiles is disastrously illustrated by the disappearance of the Aral Sea. The Aral sea used to be the 4th biggest lake in the world, between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and it's disappearance caused mainly from over consumption of water to grow cotton. So this is my why to running Ealing Clothes repair cafe? Small rip in son's coat. The coat is all black and so wanted something that kept him visible in these dark evenings and covered the hole. Took this reflective strip and added it to the back of the coat with small whip stitch on both sides. My son likes it and he is definitely more visible because of it! This is exactly why I set up Ealing repair cafe. Yesterday we had a lovely person come along proudly holding this mend. She was inspired by Yvonne, one of our volunteers examples in the second photo to mend some holes in the jumper using embroidered roses. The result is fabulous. Even fixed some on the arm using this technique. Talking about it she said "you have changed my life!" (For the better we clarified!) She said the thing is l don't like sewing but I do like embroidery. My latest excluder, next to croc, is made from two legs of a pair of jeans and then stuffed with the offcuts of the project and other scraps of denim, material and old towels and socks, anything of soft fabric. My home made collection of draught excluders. Getting ready for #EalingRepairCafe appearance at Acton Market @marketw3 tomorrow from 10 am until 3 pm. We will have all the bits to make your own out of an old pair of denim jeans. Stuffing can be from old pillows, towels or fabric scraps. We have written up a blog on making a simple draught excluder. The croc is the oldest and one of the first craft projects I did about 15 years ago in a workshop in Birmingham at the Custard Factory, made from a fleece blanket. He's been well loved over the years, with kids fighting over who gets cuddles. Has had a few repairs and on his second pair of eyes! #homemade #draughtexcluders #ealingsewnup

Come along with your clothes mending pile and problem mends to Ealing Clothes Repair café to be taught how to mend your clothes. Ealing Repair café volunteers will be on hand to teach and advise you on how to repair your clothes. You can also pick up one of their darning and patching guides and there will be samples, books and equipment to inspire and help you mend your items. At #EalingRepairCafe was a more challenging alteration, a pleated dress. We had a great outcome and the owner of the dress couldn't believe she had done it! I was apprehensive about how to approach this. The pleats would be difficult to maintain with such a light material. Our team of volunteers all suggested ideas and we decided that there was enough material to experiment and trial a new seam. A very small zig zag stitch was done all around the edge and then trimmed down to see if it would work. The test result was promising so on she went and did the turn up. She was delighted with the result and will be back to turn up the dress lining as well. Sometimes it's all about having a go and seeing how it turns out. This zipper kit came in useful for #EalingRepairCafe today at @marketw3 as it made easy work of fixing this broken zipper. Remove brake at top and take broken zipper off and add the new zipper. The owner was delighted. Then I added a new brake to top of zip and a few extra stitches to stop it coming off.
