Seafood shopping: Have you ever tried bringing your own containers at a #seafood market/section to avoid #singleuseplastic? I started bringing mine a few years ago and tested it out at some #farmersmarkets and #grocerystores. Some gave me weird looks, others packaged it up in plastic and then placed it into the container, and some completely refused me as it’s against their policy or some FDA regulation. Most of the time, they wrap it up in paper with plastic lining then put it in the container (Photo1). In rare occasions that I get lucky, they put it right into the container and I give them my biggest smile and instantly tattoo their face on my mind so I know to look for them next time. I’ve also kept the sticker labels to show that they’ve done it before and they can do it again.😬 When it comes to the paper with plastic lining (Photo2), which is the most common scenario, I wash them, hang them dry so they don’t smell, then throw them in the trash. So, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. Interestingly enough, the more I did it, the more it worked. What’s your story? Jimena Díaz Leiva, PhD, the science director at California-based nonprofit the Center for Environmental Health: “Many of them are proprietary secrets of these manufacturers,” Díaz Leiva says, “and very few of them have undergone any sort of testing to prove that they’re safe to use.” What we do know is that almost all of the plastics that have been studied and tested show signs of leaching, to varying degrees, some of the chemical additives that go into them. Samara Geller, the senior director of cleaning science at the Environmental Working Group: points to a database of over 12,000 food contact chemicals (FCCs) that was compiled by the Food Packaging Forum, a nonprofit based in Switzerland. They identified a huge need for more research on over a quarter of those 12,000 chemicals known to be intentionally added to food contact materials. What are single-use plastic products? Single-use plastic products (SUPs) are used once or for a short time before being thrown away. The impacts of this plastic waste on the environment and our health are global and can be drastic. The Plastic Waste Makers Index, published by The Minderoo Foundation, looked into the countries generating the most single-use plastic waste per capita, with Australia being one of the very worst ranked.

Calgary City Council Repeals Single-Use Bylaw The Calgary City Council has repealed the single-use bylaw, meaning businesses will no longer have to charge a fee for single-use or reusable bags. The bylaw was repealed on Tuesday after a public hearing. The bylaw was first enacted in January 2023, to limit the number of single-use items that end up in city landfills. The bylaw required businesses not to provide foodware, straws and other single-use items unless requested for. Companies were also required to charge 15 cents for a single-use bag and $1 for a reusable bag. The prices were to increase to 25 cents and $2, respectively, starting in 2025. However, after political and public pressure two weeks after, the council voted in favor of starting to repeal the process. After the Tuesday hearing, the council voted 12-3 in favor of repealing the bylaw with immediate effect. The council will reportedly work on new bylaws for single-use in an effort to minimize the number of waste going into landfills. The city said around 15 million single use items go to the landfill every week. “I think behavior change is an important component here. But how you drive that behavior change is even more important. So it was clear that using the approach of a charge, especially at food service locations, was not the way that Calgarians were going to engage with us on this”, said Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek. Calgary city council has officially binned a bylaw requiring businesses to charge for a paper bag and only hand out single-use items upon customer request. The bylaw, which council approved in 2022, set a minimum fee of 15 cents for paper bags and $1 for reusable bags, and required businesses to only provide single-use utensils, cutlery, napkins and condiments by customer request.
