Og ikke mindst @_saragade ,som støttede initiativet med tørrede hørplanter fra Pigmenthaven, så vi kunne få en fornemmelse af fibrene. Billedet er blot et lille udpluk. Kokonerne fra silkelarven, plastikken/polyesteren baseret på olie og viskose baseret på træflis, gjorde størst indtryk. I 2025 forbydes det at afbrænde tekstiler i EU. Samtidig indføres “strengere” regler i tekstilbranchen og vi skal til at sortere tekstiler som aldrig før. De næste par år kommer vi til at se store forandringer. Det kræver (tekstil)formidling. Opsummeret kom jeg med følgende opfordring: Brug den kritiske sans, stil spørgsmål, pas på det du allerede ejer og (for)brug med omtanke - også når det er genbrug. As for audiobooks, I enjoyed The Boyfriend Subscription, which is a M/M gay retelling of Pretty Woman. And I’m halfway through All the Feels, which is a sweet & light romance about a rebellious male celebrity and the smart woman tasked with keeping him in check. Before/after I’ve had this cardigan in storage for 2 years because of the house build. The other day I realised I still hadn’t come across it so went back into the garage and found the container it was hiding it. Unfortunately it stank like moth balls so I threw everything in the wash (wool cycle). I notice however that there was a small hole in the sleeve when I was handing it out to dry. Not too sure how that happened. Upon inspection it appears the yarn was fragile and tore. I decided to mend the whole using some left over bloom wool I had from the project. Having never done this type of mending before I studied a few YouTube tutorials and with my crochet hook (the latch hood I had just wasn’t working) and a yarn needle I got it done. Repairing this sweater took four attempts 😭😭 I tried to embroider something cute over the hole but the material was just too stretchy and slippery I was able to follow the instructions for repairing runs in a sweater from the Songer Sewing Reference Library book Clothing Care & Repair. There was still a bit of a hole left afterwards so I tried darning it. No more hole 🤷🏾♀️ and I feel like I did surgery on a grape #singersewingreferencelibrary #visiblemending

Visible mending on little jeans. Inspired by @maryanastasia and her workshop on visible mending at @oursocialfabric for #FashionRevolutionWeek, I started mending my son’s jeans this morning. The process was so addictive I finished the mend the same day! A denim patch behind the holes (cut from an old pair of my husband’s jeans) and then blanket stitched around the holes. I then added a cross stitch inspired by sashiko over the entire patch. I fixed up a few worn spots around the cuffs with (very rustic) satin stitching. Et voila. My dear friend @tierneythys asked me to mend this cherished Christmas stocking that her grandmother knit her many years ago. This stocking is so nostalgic, with its adorable Santa and snazzy sequins. Moths also must have thought it was delightful because they had eaten away at it in various places. Tierney is an amazing marine biologist and @natgeo explorer who is passionate about textiles and protecting the environment, so she gave me full artistic freedom but asked that I only used natural fibers. I was surprised to find that most of my mending thread contains a bit of nylon, likely to strengthen it. To find something to fit the creative brief, I turned to the best shop for menders, @brooklynhaberdashery, and found a wealth of options, including incredible natural wool that is colored with natural dyes. The result is mending that somehow seems of the era, so while it’s visible, it doesn’t feel out of place. Getting to test and mix materials is one of the joys of this practice, so I’m grateful to Tierney for helping me stretch my practice to avoid unecessary use of plastics. #visiblemending

What was your first concert? I mean your first REAL concert, not just one for kids? Mine was @hallandoatesofficial H2O tour when I was in middle school. Me and my bestie, @lesleyanngraham, went together chaperoned by her dad and it was magical. A sense that our love of this group’s music was shared by so many and that they really truly existed as flesh and blood humans outside the confines of MTV. Last year for xmas, I found us both vintage tshirts from that tour and I think it’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever given anyone (see the last photo). So I was particuarly touched when I was asked by a young friend - who is coincidentally (?) the same age I was when I attended that very Hall & Oates concert - to repair her treasured Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert tshirt. As a committed Swiftie, this shirt held immense significance for her and so when it developed a tear, her mom, @thegisellehale, asked me if I could mend it. When I took a closer look, I was surprised and delighted to find that the hole was actually heart-shaped. It’s not uncommon for people to feel that objects have spirits, but this particular hole made me wonder if damage itself has a spirit. If it does, this hole’s spirit is loving and joyful, perhaps a reflection of the adoration this young person feels for this particular artist. So it was a fairly obvious thing to lean into that sentiment and celebrate love through mending and embroidery. As an added layer of meaning, the patch I used is a cut off from one of my husband @david.w.stewart‘s cherished tshirts that had been worn literally to shreads. It’s now living its next best life giving a second chance to garments that are earlier in their journey. And so this beloved concert tshirt now also bears the mark of an intergenerational support system, extending care to the next generation and uplifting the things they love and cherish. #visiblemending #taylorswift #taylorswifterastour

Welcome to another one of our wonderful members: Molly Rooke / Darn Good Studio Molly is an artist and founder of Darn Good Studio, a clothing repairs service based on Dartmoor. Molly worked as a Fine Artist and Printmaker before turning her hand to mending in lockdown. Molly works from her home studio offering repairs to commission and runs repair workshops across the South West of England. The ethos behind Darn Good is a focus on sustainability and giving clothes a second life, rather than sending them to landfill. It is about making a conscious decision to repair and restore, and to rethink our consumption of fashion and textiles. Does this object show 500 year old visible mending? Pieced and patched, this chasuble was clearly worn many times. It is made of wool and linen with only a small amount of silk trim and so probably represents the kinds of church vestments worn in less wealthy parts of Europe. It is a remarkable survival, because far fewer everyday objects have been preserved from the Renaissance. Even more remarkably, its lining is made from Perugia towels which were at least a century old when they were reused as the lining of the garment. Patchwork has a long tradition that combines economic use of materials with creativity and design, and often emotional and spiritual meaning. In an era when the Church was particularly criticized for over-spending, this object shows the ways textiles were used, reused and valued by many in European society. Our Summer Courses begin on the 18th May with DARNING 1600-1900 - FUNCTIONAL & FANCY Clothing of all status was precious, and was darned and repaired, such as this pair of 1640-60 silk satin stitched stays in the School’s collection, darned both inside and out. The stays are among the garments to be studied for the upcoming darning course 18th/19th May. The beautiful pair of 17th century stitched stays may not be the first garment that springs to mind when thinking about darning but on close inspection they were carefully darned in pink silk on the outside and linen thread on the inside. The thin baleen has razor sharp edges that cut through the silk satin and we think the baleen strip might have snapped at that point. The last two images on our 1773 sampler are of the front and back of a darning method for mending knitted silk. Darning is sometimes visible, at other times invisible. This vintage Scottish wool (biodegradable) sweater was acquired at a thrift store for a couple bucks because it was covered in moth holes. But it’s worth saving. I started with (what I thought was) a complimentary color in orange. As much as I didn’t want to tear out all that darning, I just couldn’t abide it. So I started over in pinks and purples…didn’t love that either, so I started felting over some of the holes. This camping hoodie was needed for an anniversary trip to Ireland, but each sleeve had a small burn hole. The smallest hole was repaired invisibly with a small matching weave. The larger hole was repaired with a visible mend to honor the garment. Er kommt immer wieder. Dieser rosa Sotto Mettimi Pullover aus feinster Merinowolle ist Stammgast bei mir. Im Laufe der letzten Jahre kam er in den Genuss so einiger Reparatur- und Kosmetikbehandlungen. Langsam wäre ich bereit, auf Nimmerwiedersehen zu sagen. An manchen Stellen ist er grossflächig sooo dünn, dass das Verstärken hier Tage dauern würde. Jedoch, eine letzte Chance vor der Museumsreife hat er noch bekommen. Diesmal habe ich die löchrigen und dünnen Stellen an den Ärmelbündchen mit Nadelspitze bzw. Honeycomb Darning verstärkt. Dafür habe ich einen sehr dünnen Baumwollfaden benutzt. An einem Ärmel habe ich auf der Aussenseite gestickt, beim anderen Ärmel auf der Innenseite. So ist aussen gar nicht viel zu sehen. Ihr könnt es auf den Bildern sehen. Die roten Strickpatches auf den Ellenbogen und die und Zierstiche an der Kragenkante sind von früheren Reparaturbehandlungen. Ich freu mich sehr, dass sie so gut halten und immer noch toll aussehen. Ich kann nachvollziehen, dass sich die Kundin nicht von dem Stück trennen möchte. Hier stecken sehr viel Liebe drin, und viele Stunden mit dem Lieblingsstück auf der Haut, vermutlich verbunden mit bleibenden Erinnerungen. Und natürlich auch einige Investitionen in die Reparaturen. Tydligen har visiblemenders-människor en yarn-yard. Märkligt nog inte jag, då hela konceptet annars rimmat bra med min övriga personlighet. En yarn-yard är ett stort löst trassel med garnsnuttar man sparat för att ta av och göra synliga lagningar av. Jag sparar mina garnsnuttar i små sorterade minihärvor.... De som är långa nog att kunna användas till lagningar alltså. De andra knyts direkt in i mitt fransgarn. Iofs har jag en tuss garnkonfetti med för korta garnsnuttar att kunna ens knytas. De blir extra fransar i fransgarnet. Eller effekt vid tovning, tufftning, diktning och vissa applikationer. Hoppas att den tussen med räknas som en yarn-yard. 😅 För jag vill ju med ha en egen, men pallar inte garntrassel. #visiblemending #slowfashion #cirkulärekonomi #tatillvara
