For this spookiest of months the #librariesofInstagram are highlighting #bookguts-- especially the munched kind in #whoatemybook ?! Here's a bit of bookworm damage that I always have been fond of because of its proximity to Edmund Waller's line "Govern'd by chance" in this 1684 edition-- (Waller was seldomed governed by chance, being a thoroughly political animal.) My #marbledmonday offering : the endpapers from the 1725 edition of Edmund Waller's Poems published by J. Fenton, London. The binding is original so the papers are period. Waller, nearly forgotten today, was one of the most famous court poets of his day, a Politically adept Royalist who managed to ingratiate himself with the Puritans, and flourish during the Restoration. He was adept at flattery and classical turns of phrase.
