Tombe de Jules Verne au cimetière de la Madeleine de la belle ville d'Amiens. Très beau cimetière, de par sa taille et de par ses espaces verts. Nous avons croisé des biches et des ruches. Ainsi qu'une photographe déguisée en buisson pour les photographier - les biches. La statue de Jules Verne a été édifiée en 1907, deux ans après sa mort, par le sculpteur Albert Roze. Elle représente l'écrivain sortant de sa tombe et de son "exil mortuaire". Yesterday I presented my ongoing research into the Bat Carver at the meeting for the Western New England chapter of the Association for Gravestone Studies, so I wanted to give everyone an update on where things stand. For now, I have a hypothesis of who the Bat Carver *might* be. His name is Martin Winchel (1708-1785), and he lived most of his life in East Granby, Connecticut, which was at the time the “Turkey Hills” parish of Simsbury. This particular stone is significant to my hypothesis because it is one of the Bat Carver’s earliest works, before his style evolved into his distinctive “bat wing” design. This stone marks the grave of Martin Winchel’s first wife Deborah, who died in 1730 at the age of 17, and it is located in Simsbury, Connecticut. It has a striking design, with an abstract pattern of circles and triangles. The shape of the stone in probably based on the earlier work of George Griswold, but the design seems to be original to the Bat Carver. This is the only stone of this variety that the Bat Carver ever made, and to my knowledge no other carvers from his time period ever made a stone with a design quite like this. As for the identify of the Bat Carver, at this point there is still a lot more work to be done, including finding documentation that more conclusively ties Martin Winchel (or someone else) to these stones. Right now my hypothesis is based primarily on circumstantial evidence, but I would be interested to see if anyone else has come up with any theories about him! Micanopy, Florida This stone marks the graves of John H. Simonton (1832-1873) and his son Willie Du Bose Simonton (1871-1874). The two died within a year of each other, possibly from yellow fever as there were a number of outbreaks in Micanopy in the late 1800s. The top of their stone is decorated with a large willow tree. Because of their drooping branches, willows were often used to symbolize sadness and mourning. A Monumental Folk Man Richard Alan Altman (1949-2009) Section 122 Lot 44807 Richard Altman was at one time the owner and operator of the venerable folk music store, Folklore Center, in Greenwich Village, New York. Altman was born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, New York. At an early age, he was drawn to Greenwich Village, as many were in the Sixties and Seventies. In 1973, Altman took over the Folklore Center after its founder, Israel “Izzy” Young, decided to return to his homeland Sweden. According to an online blog, “For 10 bucks, [Altman] got the store and the inventory and all the debts, which he tried to pay off.” The Folklore Center and Fretted Instruments Shop had been founded by Young in 1957. It was a place where people could buy instruments, books, records, and other folk related materials. It was also a gathering place for the growing New York City folk music and poetry scenes, such as Bob Dylan, Peter Yarrow, Dave Van Ronk, Ted Berrigan, and many others. Dylan spent a lot of his time sitting in the back of the store listening to the records that came through the shop. He wrote a tribute song to the place, “Talkin Folklore Center”, and cited the time he spent there as a major influence in the development of his folk roots. Altman was also an excellent carpenter, a skilled guitar repairman, and a devoted father. For many years, he and a partner tried in vain to keep the Folklore Center open but rising Greenwich Village rents eventually saw its demise. Altman later took a civil service position with the NYCTA (now MTA), embracing his lifelong love of trains. His unique monument features a lyric from Dylan’s song, “Turn Turn Turn”, as well as an acoustic guitar and a New York City subway train.

🪦Norbert Veber graveyard Mirogoj cemetery Zagreb, Croatia Trade unionist and politician, 25 July 1912, Trieste, Austria-Hungary, 7 April 1974, Sisek, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Born into the family of a railway worker from Trieste, the whole family moved to Maribor due to fascist violence. Here he finished middle-class school and trained as a blacksmith. He joined the trade union movement and proved to be a good organizer of workers' strikes. He later moved to Ljubljana. Here he found work at the Machinery and Foundry Factory, but was soon fired due to union activity. He returned to Maribor, where in 1937 he was accepted into the Communist Party of Yugoslavia. A year later he went to Banja Luka and found work at the Jelšin grad foundry. From here he went to the railway vehicle and bridge factory in Slavonski Brod. In 1941 he joined the national liberation struggle. After three years he went to Zagreb, where he took the position of organizational secretary of the Central Committee of the Croatian Communist Party. After liberation he held numerous responsible positions. In 1958 he went to Sisek, where he ran an ironworks until his death. Not really one I’d usually post on the grid as the photo quality isn’t great but the light had all but faded and we were getting battered by a big old rain storm when we finally located this one under a yew tree. I guess it’s easy to overlook but this is one of the oldest, still legible headstones that I’ve seen in a Kentish churchyard and therefore worthy of a shout out. Thomas Gover was laid to rest in 1690 and it’s just amazing to me that we can still read the words that were carved into this stone atop his grave over 330 years later. Honestly, take a moment to cherish these headstones because we are exceptionally lucky to have them. John Sanger (1815-1889) was a circus owner (John Sanger and Sons) in which horses featured.
