Fun fact: it’s not exactly known on which day in April 1564 Shakespeare was born but, since his baptism was confirmed to be on April 26, his birthday is celebrated 3 days earlier, April 23rd. Shakespeare is the reason I fell in love with literature and the English language. His work continues to fascinate me decades into my reading journey. The way he plays with the language remains, in my opinion, unparalleled till today. His genius extends beyond playwriting and lyrical poetry into a realm of pioneered creativity, insight into human nature as well as timeless entertainment. How did he do it? I have been reading and rereading most of his works and cannot with a clear conscience say I have only one favorite piece as most have distinguishing elements that make them brilliant works in their own right. 𝐂𝐢𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜 হরীন্দ্রনাথ চট্টোপাধ্যায় বা হারীন্দ্রনাথ চট্টোপাধ্যায় কিংবা হারীন চাটুজ্জে- (নাম নিয়ে একটু গোল আছে তবে নামে কিই আসে যায়) বললে কি আপনার সহজে মনে পড়ে যাবে ঠিক কার কথা বলছি!!! - কিন্তু যদি বলি এমন একজন মানুষ- গায়ে কালো জোব্বায় সাদা দিয়ে বরফি আঁকা। মাথায় আজব এক মুকুট আর তার থেকে দুই সরু অ্যান্টেনা বেয়ে মুখের সামনে ঝুলছে দুখানা রুপোলি বল আর মুখে নানান শব্দ করছে, সরু লাঠি মাটিতে মাঝে মাঝে ঠুকছে আর খোঁচা খোঁচা দাঁত বের করে খ্যাঁক খ্যাঁক শব্দে হাসছে, আর কি বলতে হবে ইনি কে? ঠিকই আন্দাজ করেছেন বরফি- গুপি গাইন বাঘা বাইনের সেই জাদুকর। কিংবা সোনার কেল্লা "সিধু জ্যাঠা"- যাঁকে এই আমলের "গুগুল মশাই" বলা যায়।তিনি একাধারে কবি, গীতিকার, রাজনীতিবিদ, কেমব্রিজের স্কলার, অভিনেতা, প্রযোজক। ইংরেজী সাহিত্যে তাঁর কবিতাকে শেলী- কিটসের সঙ্গে তুলনা করা চলে। স্বয়ং রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর তাঁর কবিতার প্রশংসা করেছেন। ভারতের নাইটিঙ্গেল সরোজিনী নাইডু ছিলেন তাঁর দিদি। ক্ষুদিরাম বসুর ফাঁসিতে মাত্র দশ বছরে লিখলেন "The dying Pariot"-সেই থেকেই তাঁর যাত্রা শুরু। হিন্দি চলচ্চিত্রে গান রচনা করেছেন। "My heart is beating"- "জুলি" সিনেমার কথা মনে পড়ে গেল- হিন্দি সিনেমায় ইংরেজি গানের ব্যবহার হল, লিখলেন হারীন্দ্রনাথ চট্টোপাধ্যায়। -"সূর্য অস্ত্ হো গয়া/ গগন মস্ত্ হো গয়া’, ‘তরুণ অরুণ সে রঞ্জিত ধরণী’-র মতো গান লিখেছেন একের পর এক, গেয়েছেন তাঁর উদাত্ত গলায়। যে সময় মানুষ অবসর নেয় সেই সময় তিনি অভিনয় শুরু করলেন। হিন্দি সিনেমা সাহেব বিবি ঔর গোলাম,বাওয়ার্চি, চলতি কা নাম জিন্দেগি, আঁখিও কি ঝরোকে সে, মালামাল, বাংলায় গুপী গাইন বাঘা বাইন, সোনার কেল্লা সীমাবদ্ধ ইত্যাদি। ছোটদের জন্য লিখেছিলেন একটি ছড়া, "রেলগাড়ি", আশীর্বাদ সিনেমায় অশোককুমার সেই গানটি করেন যার জনপ্রিয়তা আজও অমলিন। ফেলুদার কথা রেশ ধরেই বলা উচিত ‘ভাগ্যিস আপনি গোয়েন্দা হননি, তাহলে আমাদের পসার থাকত না’। সব রকম শিল্পকলাই যেন তাঁর করায়ত্ত ছিল। ১৯৭৩ সালে পেয়েছিলেন পদ্মভূষণ পুরস্কার। ১২৬ বছর পরে এই মানুষটির জীবন কাহিনী আমাদের আজও মুগ্ধ করে। Barfi ( Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen) or Siddu Jyatha ( Sonar Kella) of Ray's films acted by Harindranath Chattopadhyay. While the world imagines you at work, In my mind you're always sitting on your porch, there's a smile, Either there are hours before you go in to work, Or you've gotten back and are sitting there to unwind.. It's always sunny where you live, But the shade's enough for the sun to not touch your face, There's a beautiful hand fan on the table by the side, And you're sat reading a novel engrossed in a case.. Not red, I imagine you in an orange dress, That makes you look right at home, All the chores in the house already finished, There's peace in your face that I've always known.. Just the thought of you is enough to unwind me, Your pace in life seems just about right, The calls for the day already made and emails sent, You leisurely wave at the familiar passersby in sight.. I've never known you to grow cacti on your porch, All your plants have to be watered daily, Ofcourse there are fish in the aquarium too, There's a fragrance of the damp earth floating about vaguely.. I always remember you walking barefoot, And sitting cross legged on the lounge chair, That anklet adorning your left foot, Ah the way there's a scent of tangerine in your let down hair.. There's a half empty mug of coffee by the chair, A green throw lying on the other seat, There is something about that silence one would want to share, You and I never really had to make elaborate plans to meet..
