📖Cassandra in Reverse by Holly Smale📖 So this book was really strange for me. I absolutely tore through the first half. I thought the character of Cassandra was fantastic, I loved the time travel element and seeing how she was adjusting to that, it was really intriguing and I was so interested to keep going and find out what was going to happen. And then……it was like somewhere around the halfway mark the story just became incredibly tedious to me. The pacing slowed down immensely, it felt like there were too many elements trying to be shoved into one story, and things just kind of fell apart. I also just really didn’t like the ending so, that’s kind of a big thing. There’s some really great elements to this story and a lot I liked about it. My picks for #AprilDiverseReads are Oh Witness Dey!, a collection of poems exploring identity among tiers of colonization by Shani Mootoo, an Irish-born Canadian artist descended from East Asian Indians brought to Trinidad, and The 5 Resets: Rewire Your Brain and Body for Less Stress and More Resilience, an approachable discussion of how to reprogram one’s body’s response to chronic stress by Dr. Aditi Nerurkar. I also chose the two featured titles in this month’s #ReadingForCharity, highlighting Yemen. The Wild Fox of Yemen is a stunning collection of poems by Yemeni-American artist and poet Threa Almontaser, and The Fox Hunt: A Memoir of Yemen and My Odyssey to America is an all too relevant tale by activity Mohammed Al Samawi. Some months Fatuma features books I’ve been eyeing, but some months she surprises me with titles not even on my radar. This month was one of the latter. I love that I can check that I’ve read for National Poetry Month, Arab-American Heritage Month, and National Stress Awareness Month with this selection! Nguyen ended up in the conservative pipeline not because of deeply held beliefs but opportunities presented. As someone else who used college to get away, to live up to expectations, and spent the time worrying that I wasn’t doing enough to succeed, I can see how someone ended up down this path (I’ve also chanted to myself, ‘Networking is important’). Once Nguyen got there, she saw the ugly side and the inability of journalists in this ecosystem to ever break out into anything else. So she struck out for “mainstream journalism” starting as a food writer, which sounds amazing (she mentions a run in with a Top Chef personality, and I’m dying to know who). However, once 2016 happened, and the mainstream was trying to grapple with how they got there, she increasingly became a “right wing whisperer.” Nguyen is a strong writer, self effacing and funny and honest. She does a good job of portraying the absurdity (which is sometimes terrifying. I had no idea what the Convention of States was before this book) of the right wing ecosystem while still treating them as people. “Conservative activism is like a kudzu plant: a movement, meant to grow as quickly as it can across every American civic and cultural institution, from school boards to Congress, from the judicial system to the newsrooms, choking out everything in its path. If you’d been able to look around the corners of America’s right you’d have seen Donald Trump coming from a mile away. Or understood that the coordinated hashstag # StopTheSteal was playing either forces the mainstream media wouldn’t understand stand until it was far too late. Or January 6, the events of which an extremist researcher and I had hypothesized about on January 4th. Or the slow-then-fast repeal of Roe v. Wade, which, for nearly fifty years, had been strategized over whiskey glasses at cocktail parties and political seminars. 📚Book Review📚 Death Sentence (Chronicles of Sobek Book II) Author: @chroniclesofsobek My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Publishes 4/30 Thank you to @chroniclesofsobek and @booksirens for the eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! I do not usually reach for science fiction when I’m deciding what is next for me to read, but with this book, I’m so glad I did! I connected with the author on Threads, and he sent me an eARC of his book in exchange for an honest review. This book had me hooked from the beginning. I didn’t read book I in this series (Anubis and the Exodus), but I felt like Speranza explained enough about the war and what happened in Book I that I didn’t miss out on much from not reading it first. After reading Death Sentence, however, I have added Anubis and the Exodus to my TBR! This book has everything I wanted in a science fiction novel - rival factions of a race warring against each other, aliens (the tall, big-headed, gray, black-eyed aliens that I always think of when I think of aliens!), reptilian shapeshifters, and a man (reptilian) who is trying to race against his own mortality in order to save his world and leave a better one for his children to thrive in. I really enjoyed how much this book tied into the historical events that were happening at the time in which the book takes place. It was interesting how he tied the Monarchy to the wars that we as humanity went through, as well as how he tied together Area 51 and what happened in Roswell, New Mexico to the aliens of the Republic! I had to speed-read the last 15% of Death Sentence because it felt like I still had so many unanswered questions! My Sunday so far ✨ This weekend didn’t feel like dressing up and going out rather I had a relaxed day sitting in the sun after shower with a cup of coffee and a book . I didn’t realise I spent 2 hrs alone by just sitting and thinking about how life changes you , your choices, your decisions with every passing phase . Last year and these few months have literally changed me as a person. I don’t function or think like I used to there’s much more to life than we assume. It’s never too late or too early for any goddamn thing to do or achieve in this world. Time and things get tough and sometimes tougher which is not always easy to handle but once you realise this is the choice I made to have a big life , happy life you can pull off anything. Nobody can motivate you more than yourself. Hiking and Currently Reading: another busy day so we squeezed in a short bosque hike in Corrales. 3.5 miles of light breeze, sunshine, the rushing river, and beautiful green leaves. I’m reading Divine Might by Natalie Haynes. It’s nonfiction, with each chapter focusing on a different goddess from Greek Mythology. I read a chapter between other physical books, which allows me to really think about that particular goddess without becoming overwhelmed with the book as a whole. Her writing is funny and relevant, incorporating both ancient sources and more contemporary movies, books, and music. Right now, I’m reading about Artemis. Bookclub 👯📚 We read powerless this month and met in the park to discuss it, we had so much fun even with a smaller group than we’ve had lately! Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars Paedyn is an ordinary disguised as a psychic when she unknowingly saves a price and gets entered into the purging trials, a competition to showcase the strongest elites in the kingdom. I really enjoyed powerless and the characters. Paedyn and Kai have an addicting banter going back and forth throughout the whole book. Overall this book was just a fun read and quick to get through. I did feel at times some things were over explained and other times things were under explained and I was left with questions. But this being a debut book it’s truly incredible! Highly recommend for any fans of fantasy romance like the hunger games, throne of glass, red queen, etc.
