My 7th graders finished up their narrative drafts today, and all I could hear was the sound of keyboards tapping away—it was beautiful, literary music to my ears, and I can’t wait to begin reading their narratives during teacher conferences tomorrow ❤️✏️
You know what I remember 22 years after teaching my first group of 7th graders? Their stories! I love ending the school year with narratives. Kids have developed solid writing skills, and they’re ready to let loose and get creative. Students have plotted their narratives, modeled after their literature circle author’s writing. Today, they examined theme and worked on developing the theme of their drafts. I can’t wait to see their stories develop through the next week ❤️ Novels make the best narrative mentors! ⭐️Even as an ELA teacher, this is something I struggled with as a student. It was so easy for me to google the definition, write it down, and memorize it enough to not “totally suck” during the Kahoot review. 🤦🏼♀️Then, when it was time to actually apply it, I had no idea what I was doing. Suddenly, we were reading Romeo and Juliet and my teacher was cold calling us to point out the tone, and I froze. I felt stupid, because I knew but I didn’t know. Heck, I was still trying to figure out what the heck was being said on the balcony! 🎯Our students are trying to process hours of new content every day. If we want students to go from memorizing to mastering ELA skills, we have to meet them where they are using ideas that are meaningful and relevant. 🎧I used to have students ask me all of the time about the difference between tone and mood, but after this lesson they are confident applying it to anything we read! ❤️An important part of my personal mentor text definition is that the book should be interesting, relatable, and align with prior knowledge. Note- it could also be picked to teach background information. Now you do not always need to read about tigers because your class really loves tigers, but try to see what they like and keep it in that similar realm. ➡️like tigers- explore different animals in the jungle ➡️like cars- explore types of transportation or how the car was built ➡️like Mercy Watson- try other books with pigs as the main character 💜Find what your students love, then start small branching out from that. ✨BLACKOUT POETRY✨ These are just my first few submissions! It’s not even due for almost another week! I have been blown away by my students’ blackout poetry this year! We just finished reading 2 Poe short stories, so they were given the option of completing blackout poetry for a page of either story (“The Cask of Amontillado” or “The Black Cat”). Many students chose to recreate the text into completely different story. This assignment is great as a stand alone descriptive writing lesson or paired with a novel. We are reading Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children which has a monster spotting and subsequent sketch artist scene. I printed off random monsters and one student had to describe it with vivid detail to their sketch artist partner. The results ranged from impressive to hilarious! The first 15 minutes of Us draws me in, unsettles me, and leaves me feeling WTFFFFF every time I watch it. It's creepy and it gets under my skin... as does the rest of the movie because why wouldn't the idea of your doppelganger coming after you be a terrifying experience to try and stop thinking about? Do I picture Lupita Nyong'o as Addie's other watching me from the darkness of my closet at night after seeing or even thinking a bit much about this movie? ...yup. The first 15 minutes of this film is totally doable to have fun watching on a Friday in October when you want to be a bit scared but also not overdo it and traumatize your students 🥲. There's so much to look at and think about: - What is going on with the first sequence and "Hands Across America"? What do we notice about the framing there? - What is Young Addie like? How does Peele draw us in? What do you make of her costume design? - How does Peele use lighting, sound, and camera movement to create suspense?
