My students have been working on this project for the last couple of days, and not to be biased or anything, but I think the majority of them turned out great! 💁🏻‍♀️😍 . Students had to read the short story, “The Necklace,” and then create a project based on a symbol that they pulled out from the story. Then, they used adjectives and descriptive words that connected back to the story, characters, and themes. . #teaching #highschoolenglishteacher #highschoolenglish #englishteacher #englishteachersofinstagram #romeoandjuliet #thenecklace #educatorsofinstagram #countdowntosummer #countdowntosummerbreak #schoolsoutforsummer #highschoolela #highschoolelateacher

As the end of the year approached when I taught high school, I was always glad that I saved the best, teaching Romeo & Juliet, for last. My unit of abridged readings and activities is designed to give struggling readers access to Shakespeare's classic play. It skillfully integrates the original text, side-by-side translations, and extended summaries to scaffold student understanding. Swipe ➡️ to check out some of the resources included. For each act, students are exposed to about 20-30% of the original text. They work in-depth on: 🔹 characterization 🔹 vocabulary 🔹 figurative language 🔹 symbolism 🔹 and more! Each act also includes: 🔹 bellringers 🔹 activities for differentiation 🔹 writing activities to reinforce learning 🔹 a weekly assessment that is Common Core aligned I culminate the unit with related nonfiction readings and projects from which students can choose. If you are teaching Romeo & Juliet, you can: 1️⃣ head to the 🔗 in my bio for this resource, 2️⃣ search for it in my TPT shop, The Literary Maven, or 3️⃣ leave me a ✉️ in the comments if you'd like me to send you a DM with the link

I’m giving away The Meanings of Meilan by Andrea Wang because it is an exploration of all the things it’s possible to grieve, the injustices large and small that make us rage, and the peace that’s unlocked when we learn to find home within ourselves. Meilan Hua’s (the main character’s) world is made up of a few key ingredients: her family’s beloved matriarch, Nainai; the bakery her parents, aunts, and uncles own and run in Boston’s Chinatown; and the Chinese fairy tales Meilan loves. This book is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! I’d recommend this one to grades 6th-8th grade. #iteachms #iteachmiddleschool #iteachhs #iteachhighschool #iteachela #ela #englishlanguagearts #iteachsecondary #iteachenglish #2ndaryELA #middleschoolela #middleschoolelateacher #highschoolela #highschoolelateacher #NCTEvillage #secondaryela #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofIG #teachersofthegram

📚 THIS GIVEAWAY FOR ASIAN AMERICAN PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH IS NOW OVER... by you should still read this book! 📚 I love reading YA because I love being able to hand books to my students and excitedly chat with them about where they're at and what they think and OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT HAPPENED. But tbh, most YA doesn't move me -- in the way contemporary literary fiction can. Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay moved me. That's why I started teaching it in my freshman English classes. We begin with Chimamanda Adichie's 2009 TedTalk "The Danger of a Single Story." This novel explores the concept of a single story in terms of nationalities (What does it mean to be Filipino, American, and Filipino-American?) but also in terms of gender, fathers, and, maybe most poignantly, people who use drugs. Patron Saints is specifically about the war on drugs in the Philippines (and the disconnect a Filipinx-American teenager feels to the conflict happening in his home country), but the police violence, the misrepresentation and misunderstanding of drug addiction, the pit in your stomach as you try to work up the courage to confront the people you love about how they think and talk about these issues -- Americans can ACUTELY empathize with all of this. This novel should be in all high school classroom libraries. (This color scheme is in honor of yesterday's northern lights as seen in Chicago!) ➡️🌌

I love maintaining a Rolling Knowledge Journal throughout major units, because it is an easy way for students to see and make connections. For my American Dream unit, students had to identify a character’s literal dream and then identify the abstract qualities represented by that dream. This works great for Of Mice and Men because so many characters are intrigued by the dream of owning their own farm but it represents something different for each character. #americanliterature #americanliteratureteacher #americanlit #highschoolenglishteacher #highschoolenglish #highschoolelateacher #highschoolela #secondaryela #secondaryelateachers #iteachsecondaryela

Waubgeshig Rice was in town today to do a talk at the public library and he was gracious enough to make time to also come to our school’s awards banquet and speak about enjoying his high school English class but really being blown away when he discovered authors like Richard Wagamese, Lee Maracle, and Louise Erdrich, who inspired him to start writing. I told Waubgeshig how my students enjoyed reading Moon of the Crusted Snow so much that many of them went out to buy the second book Moon of the Turning Leaves before we were even finished reading! 😅 Thank you @waub for inspiring a new generation of readers and writers #moonofthecrustedsnow #elateacher #elateachers #iteachela #iteachhighschool #iteachhighschoolela #iteachhighschoolers #indigenouseducation #indigenouseducationmatters #highschoolelateacher #highschoolenglishteachers #iteachhighschoolenglish #secondaryela

National Poetry Month in April is a time for celebrating the expressiveness, and pure delight of poetry. There's no better way to celebrate this month in your classroom than by introducing your students to the joy of verse novels. In addition to the appeal of a change of format from the typical prose novel, verse novels can seem less daunting to read and are the perfect solution to getting out of a reading rut. Just like traditional fiction, verse novels cover a range of subjects such as immigration, family, death, disabilities, imprisonment, bullying, and more. You can read on for this list of novels in verse, recommended by middle and high school ELA teachers, for you to feature in your classroom library by: 1️⃣ heading to the 🔗 in my bio for this blog post, 2️⃣ searching for it on my blog, theliterarymaven.com, or 3️⃣ leaving me a ✉️ in the comments if you'd like me to send you a DM with the link

And the winner is... "How to Eat A Poem" by Eve Merriam! 🏀 March Madness Poetry Tournament Reflections🏀 I change the bracket up almost every year, adding more contemporary poems and a wider variety of voices, but the students almost always choose one of my original, more classic poems (last year was "Nothing Gold Can Stay"). This year I downsized my bracket from my usual 64 down to 32 to start because we had one less week in March due to spring break, but I liked being able to focus on just 2 poems a day instead of trying to squeeze in 4. I almost dropped this activity this year because it felt like it was one more thing to fit in, but I'm so glad I didn't. It is a great way to build community at this point in the year and is also a great way to review a variety of skills. If you did a poetry tournament, I'd love to hear your winner. If you didn't do one in March, since April is National Poetry Month, it is the perfect time to try it!

Like it or not, standardized testing is not an educational fad that has come and gone. And even worse is that, as much as we like to tell students that a test score doesn't define who they are, those scores can have an impact on students' future. For my middle school students, those test scores determine which high schools they are eligible to apply to. For high school students, those test scores can determine which colleges they apply to and the grants and scholarships they'll be awarded. And if students seek education beyond a four year degree, those test scores can determine their eligibility for law school, medical school, and more. That's a lot of pressure for students (and their teachers too). I try to alleviate some of that pressure by making sure my students feel as prepared as possible as we approach standardized testing. While that preparation has really been happening all year long through our curriculum, it can be reassuring for students when they know that the activities we are engaging in are explicitly prepared them for the upcoming test. To check out 4 ideas for preparing students and boosting their confidence, you can: 1️⃣ head to the 🔗 in my bio for this blog post, 2️⃣ search for it on my blog, theliterarymaven.com, or 3️⃣ leave me a ✉️ in the comments if you'd like me to send you a DM with the link.

⭐️Even as an ELA teacher, this is something I struggled with as a student. It was so easy for me to google the definition, write it down, and memorize it enough to not “totally suck” during the Kahoot review. 🤦🏼‍♀️Then, when it was time to actually apply it, I had no idea what I was doing. Suddenly, we were reading Romeo and Juliet and my teacher was cold calling us to point out the tone, and I froze. I felt stupid, because I knew but I didn’t know. Heck, I was still trying to figure out what the heck was being said on the balcony! 🎯Our students are trying to process hours of new content every day. If we want students to go from memorizing to mastering ELA skills, we have to meet them where they are using ideas that are meaningful and relevant. 🎧I used to have students ask me all of the time about the difference between tone and mood, but after this lesson they are confident applying it to anything we read! Comment ❤️ for the resource! #elateachers #elateachersofinstagram #middleschoolelateacher #highschoolelateacher #highschoolelaresources #engagingstudents #digitalresources #interactiveslides #toneandmood #elalessons

🏀 March Madness 🏀 has all of my students hyped up about basketball so I pulled this stack of titles, a mix of fiction and nonfiction, verse and graphic novels for students to browse. Popular picks have been: 🏀 Who Got Game? Basketball: Amazing but True Stories (nonfiction) 🏀 Becoming Kareem (autobiography) 🏀 Matt Christopher's On The Court series (biography) 🏀 Boy 21 by Matthew Quick (fiction 🏀 Anything by Matt Lupica (fiction) 🏀 The Crossover by Kwame Alexander (verse novel and graphic novel) 🏀 Hoop Kings 2 (Sports Royalty) by Charles R. Smith (poetry) Any sports books, authors or series your students are loving this year?

👋🏻 Hi I'm Brynn aka The Literary Maven. Welcome to anyone that is newish to my account and thanks for sticking around to anyone who isn't. Since it is Spring Break, I thought I would share a little bit about me as a reader (instead of as a teacher). 📚️ I gave up making TBRs but I do try to read with a theme in mind for each month. This month, since it is women's history month, I'm focused on titles that center females. Next month I'll focus on verse novels for National Poetry month. 📚️ The titles pictured here are from my display on my front board to show students what I'm reading. I just finished Iceberg by Jennifer Nielsen and Borrow My Heart by Kasie West. I'm currently reading The Raft by S.A. Bodeen and listening to Full Cicada Moon by Marilyn Hilton. 📚️ I almost exclusively read middle grade and YA books. It helps me make recommendations for my students, but I also find so much adult fiction to be depressing. 📚️ I have DNF guilt. I really struggle with not finishing a book even if I'm not loving it. 📚️ Audiobooks have been a game changer since having kids. I try to listen in the car and while I'm doing household chores. My girls are 6 and 7 so we're starting to listen to more books together. 📚️ I also love my Kindle and get all my audio and e-reads for free through Libby. Often I will have the physical book in my classroom to read during independent reading, the e-book on my Kindle, and the audiobook on my phone so I can read or listen where ever I am. Let me know in the comments 👇🏻 what we have in common! Testing is stressful for teachers, but even more so for students, especially when scores can impact course placement, high school selection, college options, or even graduation. The best way for students to be at ease with testing is for them to feel prepared, but there are also times when you need to step back and give your students a break. Here are five ideas on how to do just that. 💡 Administer a fake, humorous test to lighten the mood 💡 Create a playlist of short films to use for reviewing literary terms 💡 Use game-based sites like Kahoot!, Quizziz, and Blooket 💡 Read about the stimulating and soothing effects of peppermint on your brain, and then enjoy a mint or two 💡 Have students write motivational notes to themselves To check out the blog post with all of the details, you can: 1️⃣ head to the 🔗 in my bio for this blog post, 2️⃣ search for it on my blog, theliterarymaven.com, or 3️⃣ leave me a ✉️ in the comments if you'd like me to send you a DM with the link.

This webquest was honestly so interesting for me to make that I have no doubts that it will be an engaging research task for students to learn more about these young climate activists that are doing amazing things to protect our planet. 🌎 Students research five tasks with online sources to complete questions about the environmental work of Greta Thunberg, Leah Namugerwa, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, Jerome Foster II, and Ayisha Siddiqa and then choose one of these activists to complete a profile on to present to their classmates. If you’d like to inspire your students with these young climate activists this Earth Day you can find the link to my TpT store in my bio 🤓 #elateacher #elateachers #iteachela #middleelateacher #highschoolela #highschoolelateacher #secondaryela #secondaryelateacher #iteachhighschoolenglish #highschoolenglishteacher #highschoolenglishteachers #englishhighschool

📚Latest Reads📚 4 ⭐️ Emma Saylor doesn’t remember a lot about her mother, who died when she was ten. But she does remember the stories her mom told her about the big lake that went on forever, with cold, clear water and mossy trees at the edges. Now it’s just Emma and her dad, and life is good, if a little predictable…until Emma is unexpectedly sent to spend the summer with her mother’s family—her grandmother and cousins she hasn’t seen since she was a little girl. When Emma arrives at North Lake, she realizes there are actually two very different communities there. Her mother grew up in working class North Lake, while her dad spent summers in the wealthier Lake North resort. The more time Emma spends there, the more it starts to feel like she is divided into two people as well. To her father, she is Emma. But to her new family, she is Saylor, the name her mother always called her. Then there’s Roo, the boy who was her very best friend when she was little. Roo holds the key to her family’s history, and slowly, he helps her put the pieces together about her past. It’s hard not to get caught up in the magic of North Lake—and Saylor finds herself falling under Roo’s spell as well. For Saylor, it’s like a whole new world is opening up to her. But when it’s time to go back home, which side of her will win out? #youngadultlit #youngadultbooks #youngadultliterature #yabooks #yaliterature #yaromance #teenagereads #teenbooks #teenromance #teacherbookrecommendations #englishteacher #highschoolela #highschoolelateacher #classroomlibrary #bookstagram #teacherswhoread #sarahdessen #sarahdessenbooks

📖 CURRENTLY READING 📖 Making Friends graphic novel series by Kristen Gudsnuk 📖 PLOT 📖 Sixth grade was SO much easier for Dany. All her friends were in the same room and she knew exactly what to expect out of life. Now that she's in seventh grade, she's in a new middle school, her friends are in different classes and forming new cliques, and she is totally, completely lost. What Dany really needs is a new best friend! So when she inherits a magic sketchbook from her eccentric great-aunt in which anything she sketches in it comes to life, she draws Madison, the most amazing, perfect, and awesome best friend ever. 📖 MY THOUGHTS 📖 This is a series that I previously had in my classroom and it was so beloved that it never got returned. I recently received a copy of book 4, and I didn't want to jump in at the end, so I patiently waited for books 1-3 to come in at my local library. I just finished book 1 last night and I think there is a lot for middle schoolers to connect to. Dany is at the same school as her old friends, but on a different schedule from most of them, so she feels left out and isn't making any new friends. She is also picked on and never has a good comeback in the moment. With Dany's creation of Madison she also creates unrealistic expectations of what their best friendship will be like. She is so focused on Madison that she almost misses out on opportunities for other friendships. In the end, Dany has to do some quick drawing to bring together her friends, new and old, to defeat another drawing from her sketchbook that has gone rogue. Book 1 ends with questions about what Dany and her friends will do with their new powers from Dany's magical sketchbook. As an adult I wanted to see more development of Dany's family members, especially the great-aunt from whom she inherits the sketchbook. I think middle schoolers will find the series relatable, but also enjoy the appeal of being to draw anything you want. Thank you to @scholastic and @graphixbooks for this #gifted copy of Making Friends: Together Forever 💕

📖 JUST FINISHED 📖 Keeping Pace by Laurie Morrison 📖 PLOT 📖 Grace has been working for years to beat her former friend Jonah Perkins’s GPA so she can be named top scholar of the eighth grade. But when Jonah beats her for the title, it feels like none of Grace’s academic accomplishments have really mattered. They weren’t enough to win—or to impress her dad. And then the wide, empty summer looms. With nothing planned and no more goals or checklists, she doesn’t know what she’s supposed to be working toward. Eager for something to occupy her days, Grace signs up for a half-marathon race that she and Jonah used to talk about running together. Jonah’s running it, too. Maybe if she can beat Jonah on race day, she’ll feel OK again. But as she begins training with Jonah and checking off a new list of summer goals, she starts to question what—and who—really matters to her. Is winning at all costs really worth it? 📖 MY THOUGHTS 📖 I picked this up last night last night thinking I would read for a bit and then head to bed, but ended up reading it from cover to cover in one sitting. The characters and issues in the book are so relatable for middle schoolers. I think there's a piece of everyone in Keeping Pace: the self inflicted pressure of being a high achiever, the shame of not being a high achiever, the struggle to move on from an activity that isn't fun anymore, the discomfort at not immediately finding success when trying something new, the strain of changing relationships with family and friends. The characters in Keeping Pace were well developed and I couldn't help but to root for Grace and Jonah's mending friendship and budding romance. As someone who is new to running as well, I especially appreciated the plot parts focused on their half marathon training. I highly recommend adding this one to your middle school classroom library. Thank you to @laurielmorrison and @wunderbookspr for this ARC, which will be released on April 9 💕

There was a time when most books published and required for reading in schools featured a male protagonist, but that is definitely not true any longer. There are now so many middle grade and young adult books featuring fierce female protagonists in both fiction and nonfiction. Muzoon: A Syrian Refugee Speaks Out by Muzoon Almellehan and Wendy Pearlman- this memoir tells the story of a brave girl from Syria, her family’s wrenching decision to leave their home, and the upheaval of life in a refugee camp. She knew that education was the key to a better future. Her passion and dedication soon had people calling her the “Malala of Syria.” I’d recommend this one to ages 12 and up. #iteachms #iteachmiddleschool #iteachhs #iteachms #iteachmiddleschool #iteachhs #iteachhighschool #iteachela #ela #englishlanguagearts #iteachsecondary #iteachenglish #2ndaryELA #middleschoolela #middleschoolelateacher #highschoolela #highschoolelateacher #NCTEvillage #secondaryela #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofIG #teachersofthegram

✨Character Cinquains✨ This week my students did character cinquains! I prefer assigning short, meaningful assignments. This makes my grading much more manageable, and my students are more motivated to complete these types of assignments, because they are confident in their ability to do well on them. I had so many exemplary examples for this lesson that I will be sharing them over the next few days. Today I am only including Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan.
