Self-Portraits - Osamu Dazai (tr Ralph McCarthy) Self-Portraits was aptly titled for this autobiography masked as collection of short stories on the life of one of the famed author, Osamu Dazai. Dazai bared all of his own deeper, dark thoughts, insecurities, his troubled foolish behaviours, self-absorbing, devilish, impudent man he was. By assuming a clownish, arrogant behaviour, he hide his own fears of people, of criticism & the rejections he faced, a safe mask and act of defense from the world that doesnt treat him kind. Yes, he was not the greatest character ever, while reading this you saw how terrible he was as a man, a writer, a husband and a father. Yet, these exact rawness he portrayed in these stories make him a human as flawed as he was, as insufferable& ridiculous he was. At core, we all had our own misguided judgement of ourselves and Dazai seems to have the worst of it since he barely recognize himself as a talented author, he constantly disparaged his own foolishness, his addictions to alcohol, weak attitude and low self esteem and its disheartening to say the least, to read these disturbing thoughts being spoken so loudly throughout the stories With 18 short stories starting with a piece on his Elder Brothers, we learned on his family background, the bond he had with his brothers and it did made me teared up a bit on the grief part. Few of the stories in here, One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji& Eight Views of Tokyo are possibly the real life reflections of his own life that reminiscent a lot of what No Longer Human was & this time around, its the exact situation he went through told matter of factly. After reading it, I felt hollow and so much sorrow for this man but also so much empathy towards his wife, his childrens whom he felt dont deserve a horrendous father like him. A man ripped apart from life at such young age, a man who did terrible things to survive day by day knowing his addictions & suicidal tendencies drove his loved ones mad yet a man that in momentary glimpses still want to hang on to life Thank you @definitelybooks and #pansingdistribution for the review copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book is in a form of letter from a child to his mother who can't read. It's sort of venting out. There are parts which are beautifully written and some sentences which makes you go wow but yet again the book is open ended and at places it felt like some portions are left unattended. The pain of people who faced war is expressed in a heart wrenching manner and certain cruelities are just over the bar but in the end this one was not that binding book. Even if it fails to hold the attention for a long time, it shows the trauma of people in the war. War - even though is the product of ambitious of the ruling but it's the innocent who is the most affected by it. #onearthwearebrieflygorgeous #vietnam #war #holocaust #narrative #shortstories #story #fiction #unboxingperspectives #suspense #suspensethriller #bookstagram #booklover #book #bookworm #bookstagrammer #reading #bookish #bookaddict #booknerd #bibliophile #instabook #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #b #read #bookphotography #bookshelf #booklove #love #b

What an amazing night. Over 1400 people queued up to fill a theater and listen to Amor Towles, author of Rules of Civility, A Gentleman in Moscow, and The Lincoln Highway. He spoke about his newest book, a collection of short stories and a novella, titled Table for Two (and many of us got free copies!) But more broadly he spoke about writing and books and literacy and storytelling and let me tell you - the energy in the room was electric. Not every author is a good speaker. Most are intelligent and have interesting things to say, but to hold an audience captive talking about developing characters or crafting a collection of short stories based on the POV of each story, takes a really good storyteller. If you ever get the chance to see Amor Towles speak, do not miss it. It was infectious and I'll bet half the audience left itching to write. I finished A Gentleman in Moscow this past weekend and it's as good as advertised. The main character, Count Alexander Rostov, is so memorable and I felt like I knew him as a real person by the end. The book is character driven, but the ending wraps all the small plot points and threads together so well. I'm planning to watch the TV adaptation ASAP (which Towles praised, especially the performance of Ewan McGregor as Rostov). Thank you so much to the Wisconsin Book Festival for putting on this event. What a treat. Pictured: the marquee of The Orpheum; a bestie from high school came for the event and we spent the hour in line chatting books and life and how high school was just like five minutes ago; the man himself walking in right as we were 😲; Madison author @christinaclancyauthor was his partner in conversation and crushed it.

Chapter Six 🌊 - The Shadow of the Sea 6/6 It slips back beneath the waves… down, down down, until it’s embraced by the familiar darkness and no more wearing eyes.  Here it rests. Some say it’s a Monster, a Hunter, a Killer.  And yet it could be all those things and none.  Simply, a predator shaping the waves and carving a path of its own through Falmouth bay. It is a creature of survival and when that urge comes stifling and clawing…  It does not feel in control. ————————————— PROJECT INCOMING: THANK YOU to everyone supporting this project, I’m very proud and glad to see others love all the hard work that went into this photographic story! If anyone has any suggestions or content they’d like to see next feel free to send me a message! ☺️ Take care x This was due for one of my modules where I could link photography and storytelling together! I was heavily inspired by the Cornish folklore tale of a sea beast named Morgawr who haunts and prowls around Falmouth bay. I decided to write something of my own that would link to my own narrative of Morgawr! This was a great chance to explore creative writing and photography together. I hope you enjoyed and look out for chapter two! ————————————— If you don’t who I am: Hi there! I’m Hannah a student photographer at Falmouth university. I love storytelling whether that’s through photography, filmmaking or writing! If you are keen to see my progress keep posted on my insta! They’ll always be posts about the seaside and wildlife too!🌊 ☀️ #photooftheday #wildlife #wildlifephotography #newphotographer #nature #naturephotography #photography #storytelling #creative #creativewriting #shortstories #writer #photographyideas #photographyproject #writing #writingproject #folklore #cornishfolklore #fairytale #suspense #thrillershortstories #photographicstoryteller #photographicart #morgawr #morgawrfalmouth #cornwall #falmouthuniversity

Happy May! It’s finally May, which means a few very important things: - Stephen King’s newest book (the short story collection You Like It Darker) comes out on the 21st. Have you preordered your copy yet? - My own novel (a debut no less) called The Lop-Sided Man comes out just ten days later on the 31st. You can preorder a paperback or ebook copy through the link in my bio 👀 I’ve been eager for this month for awhile. Publishing my own novel has been a dream since I was five, and getting a new King book so close to my own release day feels pretty surreal. AND it’s a short story collection?? Pretty fantastic if you ask me. I tend to prefer King’s short stories to his novels most of the time. Night Shift still has my absolute heart as my personal favorite so far ❤️. Maybe you like it darker will take the title? Which collection that currently exists is your favorite? (Also I understand I’m missing Just After Sunset…I don’t own a copy of it yet haha 😂.) . . . #youlikeitdarker #stephenking #stephenkingbooks #stephenkingcollection #shortstorycollection #shortstories #horrorshortstories #horrorbooks #publishedhorrorauthor #publishing #newreleases

IL PLACIDO RUMORE DELLE ONDE Racconto di Alberto Favaro RaccontiConInput-2 “Whisky, torna qui, dobbiamo andare!” Il commissario Vian guardò il labrador correre verso il faro. O far soffrire qualcuno. Poi, una mattina d'inverno, durante una missione in Russia, si era risvegliato in ospedale. Qualcuno gli aveva sparato. Quattro colpi. Due alla schiena e due alle gambe. Era sopravvissuto per miracolo. “Buon giorno Capitano. Finalmente. Pensavamo non avesse più voglia di risvegliarsi. Ha visto che bel sole che c'è fuori?” Erano state le sue prime parole. Lui quasi non le aveva sentite. Era rimasto incantato dal suo sorriso. Non ne aveva mai visto uno così bello. -𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗕𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗞 𝗦𝗨𝗜𝗧- “Wear the black suit tomorrow, it looks perfect..Oh and don’t forgot the frame I choose”, I blushed as I described him the look for tomorrow while picturing him walking straight up to me.. My thought was interrupted by a sudden jolt, as he said, “No, I can’t wear those tomorrow..Why will I wear anything you choose? I will wear anything but those” The call ended followed by a beep, a tear rolled down my eyes as I smiled and reminded myself of those sweet memories we had. He was my example of perfection. I smiled as I thought to myself, “It’s okay, he looks good in everything he wears”, that night I slept while the my pillow was awake the whole night soaking my tears. The next day as I was standing a mile away waiting for him to show up, the buzz of the crowd that surrounded me were so trifling, my gaze was stuck on the road. The bus arrived, I could feel my heart racing, eyes searching for him in the crowd of many heads, beads of perspiration appearing on my forehead in that winter morning, my feet started to shake, the clamours were now faint..any moment now..I didn’t knew was I only waiting to see him that day? I became impatient, I minimised our distance and started walking towards the bus, as I took my fourth step I saw the bus left and the last person was obscure from the distance..as the distance synchronised I could see a bright smile walking straight up to me. The more he came closer the more I felt calm, passing by me he stopped looked me in the eye and said, “Anything familiar?”, as my stare broke I saw ‘the black suit’ and the frame I choose, he wore it. “You wore it..Thank you”, I was beyond surprised to even speak a word… He smiled through the side of his lips as he said, “Anything for you”.. —Mehendi Guha Roy foryou #foryoupage #fyp #instagram #fashion #goodday #aesthetic #love #instagood #instalike #instamood #instafashion #instaphoto #instacool #quotes #quotestagram #quoteoftheday #shortstories #scout #follow #aesthetic

Did you know that many of our classic authors also wrote short stories? William Faulkner is one of my favorite southern writers. His characters bring a culture to life. During my visit to New Orleans, I went to the bookstore that was previously the flat where Faulkner lived for a while. So much history in a city that gets distracted with parties. So, what is it that is distracting you this week? God has a purpose for you this week, but the world will work hard at distracting you from fulfilling his purpose. I follow @wordsleuth on Instagram. He posts words—usually obscure or underused words—and their definitions. After six words, he challenges writers to create stories or poems that include all six of the latest words. He had been reaching out to me about these challenges, and he finally caught me at a good time: spring break. I’m glad he didn’t give up. The story featured in the last post was my entry to the challenge. The six words I had to include were (1) effervescent, (2) egregious, (3) conundrum, (4) evocative, (5) puerile, and (6) librocubicularist. I’m proud of how the story came out. It’s a glimpse into the life of an intelligent but socially awkward college student. I had to trim down the story to fit in an Instagram comment, but you can find the original on my website: https://isaacphilips.com/librocubicularist/ #WritingWednesday #letsWordImprov #FlashFiction #ShortStory #WritingChallenges #WritingCommunity #ShortStories #AmWriting  #6words1story #WordGame

N18000 In “The Boundary,” one family vacations in the Roman countryside, though we see their lives through the eyes of the caretaker’s daughter, who nurses a wound from her family’s immigrant past. In “P’s Parties,” a Roman couple, now empty nesters, finds comfort and community with foreigners at their friend’s yearly birthday gathering—until the husband crosses a line. And in “The Steps,” on a public staircase that connects two neighborhoods and the residents who climb up and down it, we see Italy’s capital in all of its social and cultural variegations, filled with the tensions of a changing city: visibility and invisibility, random acts of aggression, the challenge of straddling worlds and cultures, and the meaning of home. These are splendid, searching stories, written in Jhumpa Lahiri’s adopted language of Italian and seamlessly translated by the author and by Knopf editor Todd Portnowitz. Stories steeped in the moods of Italian master Alberto Moravia and guided, in the concluding tale, by the ineluctable ghost of Dante Alighieri, whose words lead the protagonist toward a new way of life. #bibliophile #bibliophiles #books #booklover #bookclub #bookshelf #bookreview #booknookltd #bookstagrammer #lekki #bookaddict #bookish #booksofinstagram #lagos #lagosbooklovers #nigeria #lagosbookshop #bookshop #booknookstagram #booknook #Lagos #Lekki1 #shortstories #fiction #jhumpalahiri

PLAYHOUSE HISS I wanted to go out in the garden. I wanted to kick a flower and find a bee and play in the playhouse but grandma said the garden was off limits today. I had looked forward to it all month! We don't have a garden at my home. I loved to be out in the nature. It wasn't fair of her. I was bored. Grandma had locked the doors and gone to sleep in front of her television. I attempted to watch what she had on but it was only in black and white. There was no point. _I went into the kitchen to look for something good to eat. Usually grandma had her biscuit barrel out on the table but even that had been put away. Instead, where it should have been, was a pile of scarves. It wasn't close to winter. What was she thinking? I decided to put one on and pretend I was a snowman. I pulled one loose from the tangled nest. Something rolled out and cracked upon the floor. I looked down. It was a large white egg but without a yolk. There was a weird-looking worm dead in the goo. _Grandma woke up and shouted, "You fool, Melissa! What have you done?!" _Grandma unlocked the door and ran to the playhouse and had a conversation I couldn't hear. There was a thin black shape moving inside the plastic structure. I saw a tail slither behind the window. _Grandma returned to me somewhat colder, calmer. "You killed his baby," Grandma said. "There's a snake living in the playhouse now. I was looking after his offspring. He has promised not to eat me if I let him adopt you." _I began to cry. Grandma ushered me into the garden and told me I had to crawl and eat rats from this day forth. She patted my head. "Go to him now, Melissa... He's hissing for you."
