I started making the #elementalhorses series as a response to the simplified writing system being push outside of China. Some of us look at the changes and it makes little sense. Simplified was created inside China to tackle huge illiteracy by making reading and writing easier. Reading and writing Chinese is harder because of the 2000+ words and decades of schooling to learn them… same with any other language.

To get this badge(which I so wanted) I volunteered 100+ hours at @sheacenter back in 2003ish. Younger sister showed me a flier about it from the high school career center. I loved horses and did this because I wanted to learn how to handle them and hangout with them. I had a great time and learned a lot about using horses for physical and mental therapy. As a developing artist I knew this would be an important experience to have. It was in 2012 I made the first #elementalhorses book. I decided they would be like those therapy horses I worked with 10 years before. Horses and other animals, even though they can’t talk, can sense our moods and reflect our personalities back to us sometimes. Animals are cool like that.

Finally my little personal project is complete. This has taken me 2 weeks to get all of these done. Which ones your favourite? Mine the horse of death but I had a lot of fun doing all of them and finding a funky new way to do fire. I hope this gets some form of acknowledgment bc I put a lot of effort into these spending about 2-3 hours on each one and loving motivation part way through. I think this one is it. Most art students are afraid to start over thinking they wasted their time and energy when actually it was practice for making something better. This dragon needs to be the most spectacular one. It’s THE dragon of all dragons. In Chinese mythology it’s tied to the Jade Emperor. The horn makes it look like he’s wearing a hat the emperors wear. #elementalhorses

Someone asked on Tuesday night about how the reader would know Emily in the story is Chinese. I mention her full name once, Emily Hua. Hua can mean flower or art in Chinese. This horse shows how Hua for art is supposed to be written in traditional script. It means both the act of drawing/painting, and the object//physical forms of drawings and paintings. When I first showed this drawing to people, a guy was like “I can see a dragon in that. I bet you make pretty awesome dragons 🐉!” He saw because he was looking. I did notice as a kid that my dragons do look like horses and my horses look like dragons. 🤷🏻♀️😆 #elementalhorses
